I have old FASM magazines going back 15 years or more.One thing you notice over time is often topics repeat themselves.I have even seen FSM use articles from Scale auto mag without alteration !

reload them as needed and use them until they are unservicable.... oh reading magazines... I keep all my old FSMs regardless. But after two moves in recent years I thinned out all of my othe magazine titles significantly... alot of my historical magazines were pitched,  and I thinned out many of the non FSM model magazines as well. Much of the information that those magazines had and that I bought them for is now available online.

We exchange them at our monthly IPMS chapter meeting-  almost every time, someone brings in a stack and throws them on the table for everyone to help themselves.

I've been keepin' em. Problem is, I'll come across an article that I could've used a couple of months ago.

I'll identify articles I would like to save for future, rip those out, recycle rest of mag.

At the current time if I buy it I keep it.

Depending on what magazines you have there is a market on ebay. You may not consider it worth your time and effort when you consider all the fees, packaging, and trips to the post office.  

Figure related magazines go for $5-$15 each.

FSM for $1-$2.

SciModeller at list price even on back issues. Its ridiculus!

Military related I'm not sure about as I dont generally follow those.

I rarely see current issues of IPMS. There could be a market of these if you have some from the last 3-4 years.

The bad thing about magazines is the shipping. It will often cost more than the magazine. Most magazines don't actually qualify for cheaper media mail as they contain advertising. Despite this many sellers still use media mail. I've heard that "technically" if the post office checked a package sent media mail and it contained ineligible items they can require the receiver to pay the extra postage for 1st class. I've never had this happen to me nor have I heard of others getting stuck with additional postage.

I think the best way to go with magazine is to sell them in "lots" of 5-10.

When I'm reading the older issues I like to check out the old ads and the "whats new/coming" sections. The smell of old ink/paper is a bonus!

Hoow about the prices of those new releases ? It does make today's prices a little scary,like reading an old newspaper.

Have all of them from when I subscribed in 2007 I think.

     I put them together in groups of five or six , by dates .Then I put them on bookshelves with a divider between the groups .This was started when I resided on my last large boat .Now they work well in the home I share . I have many old FINE SCALE MODELER , SHIPS in SCALE and SCALE AUTO as well as MODEL CARS and I.P.M.S. JOURNALS . If I get to crowded I take the oldest and give them to the hobby and crafts center at my local V.A.         Tanker-Builder

I make color photocopies of the articles I like.  Mainly they're tips on weathering or build articles on specific kits I have.  After that, I give them to a co-worker of mine who is pretty much a beginner.  He and his 12 year old son are both enthusiastically entering the hobby together.  They're both work on the same kit together so I'm doing my best to encourage them and help them out.  Out of sheer coincidence, I just gave him a stack of about a dozen FSM magazines about 15 minutes ago.

I started buying FSM in the hobby shops since about 1995 and been a subscriber since about 1997, but down through the years, I've added older issues that I had picked up at various hobby shops and model swap meets. I was even able to pick up a copy of the very first issue once!

I keep them in FSM binders.

I tab mine with post-it notes relating to a technique I want to be able to reference and then stick them on a shelf where they are easily accessible.

I used to keep FSM issues ( first thru 2003 ) intact, but they took up too much space that could be used to display  .........models

Much more compact now.

I use regular "D" ring binders (2" ones) and heavy duty page protectors, one issue per page protector, and I can keep two years worth of FSM in one binder. Helps keep the magazines a bit more protected and organized and it is easy to flip through the issues and see what the subject/covers are if I am looking for something specific.

Stack them up till they become a fire hazard......

Think I have every issue of FSM since 1987 or so, I really need some binders since I can't ever find the issue I'm looking for.

Ya know, that was taken for the gospel when I was growing up.  But, the more current line of thought is that the long-term compression doesn't affect the springs much; at any rate nowhere near as much as the cycling of the springs. ie. loading and unloading (by whatever means )  So, with that happy thought in mind, I do keep some of my many mags loaded and shoot them eventually and replace them with more loaded mags.  It would take a long time to load up all my ammunition into magazines, and I would run out of magazines to load looooong before the ammo ran out, lol!

I keep them stored in magazine boxes. If that series of magazines had some sort of index, I use a photocopy/scan of the index and put it in front of the first magazine. If the series of magazines did not include an index or if the box contains onsie-twosies of different magazines, I use a post it note as a bookmark and scribble the "valuable" article name (valuable to me).

That way, I can quickly pop open the box and thumb through the post it notes to see which magazine has the information I'm looking for.

If the magazine has no information of interest to me (all cars or planes, etc.) I often just donate it to my local club.

apparently, the pre-turn of the century ( before AD 2000 ) Fine Scale Modeler magazines are achieving cult status.

I learned yesterday that somebody bought up all the old 1980s and 1990s FSM magazines in stock at a local hobby shop.

The newer (post AD 2000 ) FSM magazines were still in stock.

I lost all my Scale Ship Modeler magazines in a fire a few years back.  I did not have them all but pretty close to it.  I don't hoard old mags anymore.  Well, I do but I tend do clean up more often now.  I toss away those with little information value.  Not like before where I kept them all.

I store them in the closet so when my water pipe starts to leak they turn into one solid moldy mass.  It wake it much more convenient when you have to move them.

I started buying old magazines now. I found a ton of old "Air Combat" and "Wings/Airpower" at the LHS. Got a whole 5 part series on the A6M Zero with profile drawings of the different types!
