I think I have a problem....

So far I've managed to keep my stash at a manageable dozen or so new, unopened kits. Of course, I also have my old builds from my teen years, some of which are getting facelifts or totally rebuilt (Millenium Falcon, Slave 1). And, I've got a few boxes of junk (parts from toys, dollar store trinkets, plumbing and machine parts, etc...), anything with interesting shapes that could be used for scratch building add-ons or complete models. But I know what you all mean. My mental stash would fill an airship hangar! But, I gotta keep it real.

One thing that dawned on me lately is my preference for 1/32 scale is actually keeping my stash size down and saving me money, because of the price and availability. With the relative cheap costs and greater availabilty of 1/48 kits, I would probably buy alot more on impulse, if I was into 1/48 scale.

But, even as things are now, with my new stuff and the old rebuilds, if I worked on them only in my spare time (yeah right), I'd have enough for the next 3-4 yrs. It is inevitable though; we all will end up with some unbuilt kits for our families to deal with when we're gone. I'm just going to make sure to leave em with some cool ones.

My wife thinks that I AM crazy? WhatEVER.  I MUST show her some of the stashes mentioned in here.

Paint envy, love it. That's funny, Eagle!!! Every time I went to the LHS or Hobby Lobby....... you know the drill. Hey, I'll use THAT color someday. :)

I hear ya Greg.  We have NO LHS or Hobby Lobbies here in Vermont, but when I go to A.C. Moore, I'm always walking out with paints, brushes....you know what I mean!

Dozen or so!?  That's a good start.  

Here, start with my stash.  There are more kits under the bench to the left that runs the length of the wall and some more (the really big ones i.e. 1/72 B-36, 2 1/48 B-29's, Titanic, etc) under the main bench in the center.  It's no where near as large as most stashes here, but I'm just shy of 300 (and I'm working to press past that soon! )

I don't have a problem if I have 10 B-17s, B-29, 2 B-24s, Betty, Lancaster, Mosquito, and just about any multi-engine prop plane I could find in 1/48, do I? Oh forgot to mention the 9 1/144 737s, 3 747s, and 3 1/350 Battleships (still waiting on a Texas). That doesn't include the fighters and modern day stuff

But, on the upside, all of this Acrylic paint was purchased in the last two years, replacing bottles of Enamel, a few  that wouldn't open with two pairs of pliers in the process (MM from before the MM 2 series was added on, that is about the same as age the FSM magazine)

the 2 to 6 extra bottles of each color are in plastic storage boxes with lids,,,,,,this rack set is only "one of each color"

Rex, suddenly my paint shelf which looked like too much to me, looks inadequate! I know it's going to get worse. Fast. Actually, better. Matter of perspective. :)

Greg, there is one part that can really hold up model production. You have a pretty good collection of paints on your shelves. Most of us have something similar, whether it is shelves or drawers,,,,,and we think we have enough paint to do that project that suddenly inspires us to get started on..

Then, we start pulling down or listing the colors that we need to build with,,,,,,,,,,,,and we don't have one or two of what is needed for the project.

Or even better,,,,,,,,we bring home a decal sheet from a show, direct from the producers hands to our own,,,,,,,we take it home, look over the profiles and pick one to build. And then we find out that we don't have a single bottle of Middle Stone,,,,,not a good match, heck, not even a "bad match that I can sneak in just this once",,,,,,,,soooo,,,,,we buy paint, lol.

Lately my kit stash hasnt' grown much but my detail sets have. I am a complete junkie for AM stuff. Just about every kit that I have now except for the limited run stuff has either an Aires, Eduard or Verlinden upgrade to it. My latest addition to the stash kit wise was a Meng Me-410 and now the AM world is tearing that one up so here we go with buying all of that. I've already got the AM 50mm gun barrel for it. God only knows what I'll get next for it...............

Well it just so happens that I have an example today as a mattery of fact. Just got through ordering 30mm gun barrels for my Fw190 that I'm building and went ahead and ordered a set of 20mm MG151 barrels for the Fw190 D-9 I'm gonna build! And I said this was a cheaper hobby than building hot rods!!! Sheesh!!!

I am 63, semi retired, and new to model aircraft.  Loving it.  Good therapy.  I have built a F-177 and a Laird Turner so far.   Currently working on a 1/48 Monogram Navy F-4J Black Bunny.  Beautiful bird.  A few months ago I had 0 models.  Now I have 58 and try to find deals everyday. WOW.  I think this is caused by the fumes of Testors glue.  My wife of 45 years doesn't mind though.  She is still here.  Hope to add more to the stash.  I am trying to find a 1/32 Phantom at a reasonable price that I want to build next.  I have a soft spot for those birds from my Navy days.  If I can't find one,  guess I will have to build something I already have. LOL. Have fun and don't sweat it.  Much better than drugs.  Mike in Missouri

Consider yourself fortunate. I'd like to own every model ever made, period. But I know that's an unrealistic desire so I'll never attempt it.

Glue Man.  I have found the Old Revell 1/32 RF-4 a good bargain.  The photo recon version wasnt as popular as the other versions, hence the low price.  I picked mine up on e-bay for $20 and it still builds into a nice big Phantom.

Rex, I cannot believe the timeliness of your comment. Several weeks ago I ordered an FW-190 so I could join the Butcher Bird GB. So I checked the instructions, learned what RLM colors mean, and ordered 3 RLM Vallejo Air sets. I checked when ordering, was sure I had each one I'd need.

Started cutting sprues today, first color I need I don't have. Very frustrating and you are so right. 

But..... great excuse to grow that paint inventory!!!!!

You all need  some sort of therapy !!  I have been building models for over  40 years and  I have NEVER had any of the problems that have been listed here.

Stik - I count 25 unbuilt Sherman kits, plus I'm assuming you have at least another 25 built, and another 100 unbuilt kits that you haven't even mentioned . . . you are not at fault.  As they say, some are sicker than others.

I only have about 18 unbuilt kits in various genres in my collection. *jealous* 

I sometimes have a guilt complex when buying kits. Thinking maybe I should save the money instead of adding to an already lifetime plus stash of kits.

It doesn't help knowing that when I'm gone my remaining kits will probably be thrown away, given away, or sold for next to nothing. Nobody in my family even remotely share my interest in models.

Stik - I count 25 unbuilt Sherman kits, plus I'm assuming you have at least another 25 built, and another 100 unbuilt kits that you haven't even mentioned . . . you are not at fault.  As they say, some are sicker than others.

Nah, only about a score built so far, not counting ones I have disposed of recently for various reasons... and yes, there are a few hundred unbuilt kits in my stash- enough to last a lifetime... yes I am sicker than some... 

Sheesh! I thought having around 20 kits in the stash was bad!!!!! I do have the desire to purchase way more than I'll build. With each build taking me around 8 months or so its unlikely I'll make it through all of them.

Yes, I have been working on finishing up my shelf queens for the past while. I am not sure what the current count is...

4. Cut open individual plastic bags
5. Organize the sprues
6. Wipe away more drool

8. Clean and check fit of each part
9. Glue all the parts together
10. Paint and weather model
11. Put model on shelf (Usually a bit of drooling here too)
12. Go back to #1 and do it again… and again... and again…
