I did a count of built kits, and they totalled 80+.  My two display cases are full, so I will need to give away the toys and ditch the older outdated builds to make room.  My recent builds are kinda stacked on each other - the Aliens APC used to be parked on a 1/18 diecast car, and the Black Knight is squeezed between the armor kits because there isn’t any standing room among the Gundams.

I really gotta clear out the case of old stuff.  My first contest model (Me-262 V056) has sentimental value, but it has small missing parts and is no longer up to snuff.  I need to make room for the models coming down the pipe.

I'm trying to divest myself of all my 1/48 scale kits, 60 +/-. I sold around 40 at Modelpalooza last week so I still have 20 +/- left to sell. Against that, I brought home a dozen 1/72 scale kits. To be built, I still have 25+/- 1/72 scale kits in my stash. A smaller stash means I have less to worry about and I don't feel compelled to build or else.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

60...+/- one or two.  Still pretty manageable.  The connundrum is where to display them when done because I've got 90 +/- on dispay now.

128, some of those, about 50 or so, I'll sell or give away as I don't have much intrest in them. I'm fine with it the number, I can pick something anytime I want. There are several which will take me quite a while to finish. I usualy work on a ship and a plane (or 2) at the same time.

I keep track on Scalemates, but mostly I know what I have.

My problem is not storing the unbuilt kits but the built ones.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

I've got about 36 and that's more than enough for me.  I build maybe four kits a year if I'm lucky.  I'm at the point where I have all the kits of the subjects that interest me.

My favorite shelf is the one that contains the Monogram B-36, B-29, B-17 and the Hasegawa B-47.  I'd say about 3/4ths of my kits are Monogram.  That brand really takes me back to my carefree childhood days!

I finally remembered to count while I was in the basement.  I have 9 unassembled kits.  I'm trying to keep the hobby building kits rather than collecting kits.  Collecting little bottles of paint on the other hand has become another hobby in itself. I love adding new paint to the shelf.

Think I’m at ninety nine with figure sets included, without the figure sets around seventy. How do I feel about it? Feel alright. Modeling is my only hobby and I live pretty frugal otherwise. Just in my very early thirties so I plan to finish everything.

Armor_Aficionado,

Yep.  Those lists come in handy to help stop buying the same kit twice.  Even 50 kits of 1/72 aircraft can be tough to remember when at a Model Show, Estate sale or garage sale/flea market. Then again, can you have too many A-4 Skyhawks?

My first List was started back in 2012 when planning for retirement. This was before I had a stash of any models other than the kits I had saved from when I was in grade school. It was a list of kits I thought I would like to buy.  It has since become my Ship Kit List. As my stash grew I added lists for tanks-n-planes-n-scifi, added a ship kit list by Scale, and put together a list of all my After-market  stuff from 20mm guns to brass rod to wooden decks.

One of our long-lost members, EPinniger, had created a Sailing Ship Kit database.  His web site closed before I ever saw it.  The idea prompted me to start one for myself.  Mine is not very detailed  but I had fun putting it together.  Amazing how many model Sailing Ship Kits were made (re-made, re-named, re-issued, mold leased, mold copied, etc...).   500+ was my last rough count.  (Note: It is not a list of kits I own!)

   Nino

P.S.  Regarding "the stash".  I have 70 kits done since I retired. Most are simple kits as I am a Newbie, but that is still about 20 kits a year. I figure I'll be 108 when it is emptied.

Gives a guy something to strive for.

Question for all who have 50+.

How do you store them to find and access a kit and how do you make sure you don't buy the same one again?

Some ideas:   Store them by type. Planes in the top of the closet shelf, AFV's on a shelving unit, Ships under the bed?  Make an alphabetical list of what you have? How 'bout listing/arranging/ storing by scale or by Country?

Often I will want to check one of my kits for comparing against Photo's of a newer release. For "Steel Warships" I've got 2 shelving units with things sorted by scale. ie: One  shelf for 1/600 HMS, another for 1/700 IJN ships and sections for 1/600-1/700 DKM. This makes it easy to pull out a KGV or Scharnhorst to compare with the photos of the latest Meng or Flyhawk offereing. (Flyhawk's new Scharnhorst blows away the old Tamiya kit.)

As far as having too many kits, having a model in the stash can feel quite rewarding. For me that is part of the hobby too. It is nice to be able to supply a friend with a gift from that stash and even more fun when the grandkids come over and get to pick something we can build together.  No LHS near me in Philly.  For my Grandkids I am the Hobby  Shop.

  Nino

Edit:  My planes are in the top of the closet.  Can't get a photo there as my wife is napping.  And, yeah, the big sailing ship kits are under the bed.

Nino, quick answer: Excel spreadhseet.  That's how I keep track of how many kits I have, and of what, so I don't buy the same kit twice.

Very wise, John. I did that years ago, bought way more than I could build at the time (I worked part-time in a hobby shop so I got at 25% employee discount!), so now I have tons of models that I can build without having to pay today's prices. Yeah, some of them are pretty vintage, and may not be up to modern standards, but I enjoy building them, and most will still produce a good result. Just started on one yesterday, a 40-year-old vintage kit, Monogram 1/48 scale A-4 Skyhawk!

Currently, I believe it's at 162 unbuilt kits in my stash.  That's an improvement from the beginning of this year, when I had 170+ kits, so at least I'm moving in the right direction!

Currently I have 1. Never had more then 4. I build as I buy and while I wait for a new shipment to arrive I read. Don't see much point in stockpiling.

Given your great skills I find that amazing.  You are a unicorn!

Unicorn???

I don’t think skill and the size of  the stash are connected. Or are you sayin’ that small stash equals small skills? Smile

Here's my take on why at this point I have a fairly large stash. Right now I'm financially able to buy kits that I want. Possibly sometime in the future I won't. I'm not going to give up this hobby I love anytime soon. By nature I'm frugal (CHEAP) when I see something on sale I buy it. Even though I know I'm not going to build it right now. When my retirement comes I will have plenty of choices for my next build. John

I have many open shelves in a whole house basement.  They are organized by company and what it is.  All for example,  Dragon Models Tigers are together.  All Tamiya, Bronco, Italeri, Dragon and others are together.  I got the shelves from Home Depot or Lowes.  I keep it very neat and organized.  My wife leaves it to me.  My workshop is in there as well.  We do have a Pool Table  and laundry there as well.  Luckier than most.   All the figures and other stuff is in pllastic storage containers.  Hey, its my fun time!  I re6aly llike my mass collection.  It's my own Hobby Shop.

Way too many... for a wild guess I'd say 500 or so.

For awhile I swear everytime I wanted to build something I found it was out of production- so I started stockpiling kits I wanted before they went out of print.

That and finding stuff on sale at a great price so I bought them assuming I'd buy them sometime in the future and never find such a good price again.

Don't get in this mode, I'll probably never build even half of them. Still I keep holding out that in retirement I'll get to them. At least I can say that I've really slowed my purchases down though it's still faster than I'm building.

Thats pretty much my thinking, get them while i can. There are a few kits i would really like but just can't get hold of.

And beshides, having a good size stash means plenty of choice without haveing to buy a kit in and also means i can plan out diorama's and get the extra bits i need.

A reason I have so many is that I have been building models for over 50 years.  Back then, most of what I built was Tamiya.  In the middle 1970s they had many that went out of production for years.  I remeber some, like the T-34, which were gone for years, so I  bought it when ever I saw one.  It is one of many.  Companies still do that, and the way I build is just on impulse.  There are a lot of Dragon kits that I have, that you don't see any more.  Sometimes back then they were on sale.    My job had me driving from city to city and I would stop at the LHS all the  time.   And there used to a lot of therm.  That was before the internet.  And they were inexpensive.  Not priced like they are now.  It's hard to buy kits for $60 any more.  The hobby in some ways, is a lot different.   There was a time back in the the mid 1970's when Tamiya tank models sold for $5.00.

I was also younger.

Very glad to say I only have 6 in my stash. That's what I limit myself to because I just don't see any reason to have 100's of boxed models sitting around taking up space.

Only counting those that are unbuilt and unpainted, I think I have eighteen kits total (that’s counting the unbuilt P-47 in a Lindbergh 2 in 1 kit as one kit itself). Baby stash...Smile
