Stockpile/Stash

Hmm, been a while since I counted them, but over 150, is this a obsessive compulsive disorder ? cause if it is I can get free help (I'm in the military)

LOL!! That's because they're on their way to northwest BC.   My wife was born and raised there, and we're working with Canadian immigration to grant me permanent residence. 

I had none since this weekend, now I have 4 kits waiting to be done while there is one on the wrokbench.  I never had a stash and I don't know how to deal with this.  I would like to build them all at the same time but I guess it could be confusing .  I'm gonna finish the aircraft I started few months ago and then start to build the M3 stuart light tank because I commited myself into a GB but I can't wait to try the Dragon 3 in 1 kit of a Flak gun.

I tought you were all crazy with your pile of 100 kits but since I went to a very cool hobby shop last weekend, (there is no hobby shop 100 miles around ) I might end up with a big pile too.

Actually, kits are a good investment. Keep track of what you have. I have a friend who lost somewhere around a thousand kits in a fire. The insurance settlement allowed him to fix the house that had the fire, and buy a new one (free and clear). Admittedly, the second house was a small one.

Kits are like chocolate, or garlic, or love: You can have too little. You can have enough. It is well nigh impossible to have too much!

The same factual statement I give my mother who comes to visit once in a while and complains that my condo looks like a warehouse, a nice and organized one yet still a warehouse...  I like the fact that I can actually display my investment and possibly keep them for life than to have it in my lungs or killing my liver.  Though it remains true that modeling is a dangerous hobby.  We get sharp and pointy tools, finger bonding cement, volatile and poisonous liquid/paints, and the extreme danger from weight gaining by sitting at home on a perfectly fine sunny weekend...

Well I added them up.  I think I got most of them and it ends up to 104.  Mom demanded a list.  This is usually a good thing.  It means she's thinking about buying me some and wants to know the ones I already have to prevent duplication.  Hope she doesn't notice the 2 Trimotors or the 2 F15C's!!

I agree, zokissima. Some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen....and the pace is so laid back, which is soooooo different from NY.

 

Well, I lost count after about 180 kits in the stash, all of which I intend to build.  It may be as many as 220 now. Still, I am having a blast getting these done.

I haven't found any problem with being confused when I build multiple kits at the same time. Currently, I have four ships, one aircraft, and six armored vehicles that I am building all at the same time. The important thing is to remember when you move on to the next kit; replace all the parts, decals and instruction sheets from the first kit back into it's box before pulling down the next kit. For me, it is quite easy.

Actually I will start my second kit tonight even if I haven't finish my first one.  When I was a kid, I've been told too many times to finish what I have started.  That explains why I usually do one kit at a time but I can't wait to build some armor so I'll start another one.  I just hope that I won't let the other one aside for too long, I'm afraid to loose interest.  I think someone post a thread about that; being at a point where you don't want to go any further or something like that!

You Guys with less than 50 kits don't have a stash, you have a Todo list!!!!!!!!!!! When you reach 2-300 thats a stash!!!!! I have finally realized that I will NEVER build all that I have, IE the full set of Dukes of hazzard kits(orginial issue!) The BIG Monogram B-52 with "Jet Sound" AMT B-70 A bunch of old 1/700th ships. I still buy stuff but mostly I'm buying PE/resin and decals to upgrade the old kits I have that I am working on or planning to work on.

I have reached the 300 mark or at least I'm close to it. Just don't ask my wife. She would probably say I have thousands.   She gets a little miffed at times when I add to the stash.

So far, I haven't come to that point of losing interest in any that I've started. Personally, I HATE having unfinished kits on my bench! I want them all to be finished so I do my best to comnplete everything I start. Of course, when a vital part goes missing and I can't find or replace it.....

Oh well, at least 99% of what I start gets finished!

Duke, with the rate you build them, I'm surprised that you have a stash! I build one at a time, but always finish it - no matter what.

I've just recently returned to the hobby, so I don't have much of a stash. Still, I've noticed it can be addicting buying kits. Hobby Lobby has had a 40% off coupon this week- I've been in every day. I'm buying kits I *know* I may not build for weeks or months. I hide them at my office, so i don't bring them all home at once!

But I love looking them over, checking out the casting, the instructions, all that stuff. I don't know whether it's just enjoying the hobby or if I'm getting obsessed, but I enjoy just looking at the un-built kit, and researching the aircraft, etc. I feel like a kid again.

Maybe I am becoming a styrenaholic? LOL

By the way- I bought the Accurate Miniatures SBD-3 "Battle of Coral Sea" version and it ROCKS. The detailing is amazing. The instructions are fun just to read- they've even got humor. (Something like "the pointy end of the bomb is usually in the front.") To actually READ instructions- that's nice.

Most of my $$ at Hobby Lobby this week has gone to AM kits.

About 20 years ago, I built up quite a stash of kits before family/work/transfers set in.  I still have them, though they're all back in the States in storage.  When I got back into the hobby about 6 months ago, I decided this time to make a "short list" of kits I was really interested in and ignore all others no matter how low the price.  I came up with about 15 kits total after thumbing through my new Squadron catalog that I couldn't live without.  This process lasted about 2 months before I fell off the wagon with a Revell 1/32nd ME-109G-4 Trop in one of Squadron's monthly sales.  Evil-bay crept in, too, and my lust for weird and unusual kits took a new twist.  Plus, the Revell of Germany kits can be had pretty cheap here in their homeland if you know where to look.  The R-of-G He 70F took me up to 35 kits total yesterday, and I still don't even have all I wanted from my original "short list"  Unfortunately, the wife has started to notice my growing pile of unbuilt models, so I'm forcing myself back on the wagon for a while.

LOL! Yeah, I do have a stash. Mostly because I can get some great deals at my IPMS club, and occasionally I am able to go to a local Kit Collectors Expo and Sale. As for finishing, yeah, I finish 99% of mine that I start. Examples of kits not finished:

AMT's F-104 Starfighter: finished with everything except the canopy--canopy lost.
Revell's P-39 Aircora: finished with everything but propeller--Propeller assembly lost
Revell's Me262: finished with everything except horizontal stabilizer--horizontal stabilizer lost

If I could find/replace those missing pieces, these would be able to be called complete as well. But untilo then, I have them sitting on my shelf with these glaring incompletions!

So far though, between March 1st and this posting, I have completed:

11 kits in 2 months???? There, I rest my case. You are a modelling building Maniac! The last time I built some many kits in 2 months was when I was 14 and spent my whole summer building models.

Yeah, I guess you are right. Maybe I should count them all to see if I've broken 1000 completed models yet. Still it rankles to see those unfinished kits sitting there waiting for me to find their last parts.

I know exactly what you mean, the same thing is happening to me right now.  I mmust find a way to insert all those buys in the family budget!

Yeah me too. Too many on my wish list since I've gotten all the armor I want in my stash. Now I'm stocking up on A/C. I too enjoy the research aspect, looking at different color schemes and learning about the plane itself. I'm very into Japanese planes, but wouldn't mind that SBD! I still haven't the courage to tackle those Luftwaffe schemes or the Spit's. Someday........someday.........

I only have 17 new unbuilt 1/35 armor kits in my closet.  But then again, this is only my 2nd month into the hobby.  ( I should probably also mention the 13 radio controlled tanks I've acquired over the same 2 month time span). 

Could this be considered a healthy start?

So you already have a tendency to start building up collections.  From my first hand experience the past year, STOP while you still can.  Just try to build them and seek more after you finish one.

I'll second that! Collecting is fun and exciting, but building is a whole lot better.

I stopped buying more than a year ago, and now just focus on getting paintand tools that I need.

I am not really a "stash" kind of modeler. I got 5 unbuilt kits and I am currently working on one. I think I won't be buying another kit until I finish 2 or 3.

I made a visit to my basement few days ago to find a suitable place for newly acquired kits.  I didn't realize I had over few hundred kits and yet, I am still buying more kits.  My insane purchasing habit has to stop.  And yet, I only partially completed few kits only.
