I enjoy the kid sitting down and painting one of her snaptight models, its a lot more fun than cat hair, of course, the cat can be fun to, but I think the kid gets more excited when I get a model done than any of the animals I have... well, the guinea pigs get pretty excited when I do a fly by on thier cage Big Smile [:D]

Oh wait... I'm not suggesting that people here need to improve, just people and things in general.

I'm sorry.  Discussion really isn't the word I wanted to use.  I'm sure people might start discussing there own person experience like you did, but I think the wisdom you shared might make some people take a look at their home situation and whether or not they can improve it.

Your welcome...

Gee, I didn't mean to put an end to the discussion  Shock [:O]

I just thought sharing some of my trials and tribulations might shed some light on the subject and help others.

Thanks for reading and not falling asleep.  Big Smile [:D]

There has been mention of hiding the hobby expenses from the wife, friends asking if he has any bad habits, baby on the way how can I model (congrats Mortar Wink [;)] ), along with many other obstacles regarding our other half and modeling.

I'd like to say, my wife encourages me in the return to modeling endeavors.

When we first got together I was into all kinds of things -
Harley's, bar hopping (tittie bars), and hanging out with... well getting into trouble,
Muscle cars, racing at local tracks, heavy drinking... getting into trouble,
Cruising the beaches with the guys, street racing, ... getting into trouble,
Working in the garage until wee hours of the morning, ... getting into trouble,
Fishing - both fresh and salt water.
Breeding and raising fresh water tropical fish, I had 17 tanks in a small 3 bedroom apt.
Sometimes I'd zomby out in front of the boob tube and watch racing all day long.
Now she doesn't mind watching racing as long as I'm not in it and it's only for awhile on TV.

Child one came along! She passed away a few days later. I went off the deep end and drank & rode heavy for awhile. Child two comes along, hurray she makes it home. That meant a cut into my fun money, so I started working longer hours. I was home less, partying less and still didn't have money for "my" fun stuff. The race car went, bar hopping slowed down to just Friday nights. Humm, she's upset still... so I take a second job for more income. Child three comes along... AHHHH now what? Muscle car goes and we get a family vehicle. The bike goes as doctor bills are pilling up (lost medical insurance). No more going out partying, once and awhile I'd stop at a friends and have a few beers and play darts in his garage and BS for a few hours. Fishing... what's that? Fish tanks get cut down to two small ones. Watching racing on TV? Nope traded that in for Barney. Ok, so now I'm working tons of hours and I'm never home except to sleep. We have enough money but wifey still isn't happy. She wants me to spend time with the family instead of always working. So I land myself a decent job that can handle all of our finances and then some. She was happy for awhile but really wanted to get back out and work herself. So I start my own business and mama gets a job. I'm now doing the Mr. Mom thing. Whenever the kids get hurt or needs to talk, they came to me instead of mama. Wifey quits her job and stays home again. I'm trying to make a go of it with my business (at home) so I start working long hours to meet deadlines. Kids go off to school and I find out that it's getting rough. They have metal detectors and drug deals going on. Down the street from our neighborhood we started hearing gun shots from drug deals going bad or irate boy friends. Enough of this life style, we move to NH from CT. My ulcer clears up, but I'm still unhappy and the wife see's it. I go back to working as a mechanic eventually and get hurt. Now I'm not the same guy I used to be and never will be. Doctor advises that I take up a hobby or two, do something not too strenuous for exercise.

So I'm back to modeling with my sons encouragement and my wife finally got me a canoe. She isn't into fishing, but she goes out with me once and awhile just to spend time with me. She picks models up for me when she goes shopping. She's pushing me to start a hobby shop business while I'm taking college courses again. We're having a bit of troubles getting the hobby shop business started, but we'll work through it I hope.

A very important lesson I've learned along the way, talk things over with your other half. Don't hide anything from each other. Spend quality time with each other. Hobbies take a back seat to a working and lasting relationship. Once the bond and camaraderie is there, everything else will fall into place. It's not what type of hobby you do (though it might help) that needs to be dicussed with our other half. It's the fact that we want or need something that we enjoy doing and helps us relax. There's too much crap going on in the world and our lives everyday. So if building models and/or watching fish swim in a tank helps lower your blood pressure, good for you. And yes, it's been medically proven that watching fish in a tank helps lower blood pressure.

Sorry for the essay!  Blush [:I]

But I needed to vent and say thanks to my wife for always being in my corner.

"Thanks honey for being so understanding and putting up with me." Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Gee, I hope if she reads this it doesn't mean I have to have sex again? Shock [:O]

"But honey, we did it just last month... "  Whistling [:-^]

A hell of lot cheaper than a bass boat!  Really, model building is pretty economical hobby, unless you have a stash of 300 unbuilt kits!

Funny - my other hobby is rock climbing.  I think my wife likes my modeling hobby better.  It's cheaper, I'm home more, and she's not worried about me hurting myself too much while modeling (although there have been a few super glue and x-acto accidents in the past).

My wife never really complained about my modeling purchases, mostly because I exercised some discretion.  A few months ago I opened up a separate checking account that I keep funded via ebay auctions, gift money, odd jobs etc.  Now I have an independent source of funds that I can spend anyway I see fit and the wife is unreservedly happy.

And as bgrigg pointed out, it's still a darn sight cheaper than my golf habit.

When it comes to my hobbies, my wife is a gem. Over the past 32 years she has watched as I first got into cabinetmaking which of course meant buying a shop full of tools and machinery. Then came the gun collection which also naturally included aquiring more ammo that the local NG unit, gun club memberships, scopes, more tools, etc. And now over the past two years I've thrown modeling into the mix along with the other two. Shelves full of unbuilt kits, paints, airbrush equipment, even more tools, etc.

Through all of this she's never complained. Well, maybe a couple of times but nothing major. She knows I go to work every day, pay the bills, keep up with the work around the house and have time for her. She figures that if all of my family responsibilities are kept up with then what I do with my spare change is up to me.

In a nutshell I gave up tens of thousands of dollars worth of a hobby and investment in the name of responsiblility. I countered with about $1,000 worth of modeling gear and kits. I can do it at home and there is no danger to our boy as long as I keep the chemicals locked up.

I was married once. My former wife used to get annoyed at all the kits I had (about 300 at that time) unmade and cluttering up wardrobes etc.

She used to say that the models would be the end of us. However, I found another way out in the end <G>.

My current partner tolerates my models, and has had a go at a few of them herself. She insists that I have enough in my stash now, though.

When I met my wife...she had a friend who asked, "Does he have any habits?" My wife replied "Yeah, he smokes"....."No, I mean like does he play sports, or buy stuff..."

Think of the connotation of the word "habit" in her question. She equates "hobbies" with some type of distracting or harmful fetish. Over the years, I've realized that to her, a "habit" is ANYTHING that distracts attention and/or MONEY from her. She wound up marrying my best friend a couple of years ago. He loves going to concerts, playing guitar, watching boxing with his father and playing video games. Those are his "habits." (And he caught a LOT of grief for them).

I've had my squabbles with the wife over my through the years, but the simple fact remains: It's something I love doing, have been doing since I'm a child, and I'm not giving it up. I've seen friends give up season tickets to their favorite sports team after getting married, flood e-bay with their "toys", or worse...throw them out. Yet whenever I go over their house, I get to see the "good" china in the breakfront, the doll collection, the jewelry...etc.

In a lot, but certainly not all, of the situations it comes down to selfishness.

Coincidentally, my wife accompanied her friend down to her lawyer today. Her friend was filing for divorce.

Ya know, its funny that you mention "toys" in there, cause when my fiance saw my hotwheels and diecast car collection, she started laughing at me cause those were kids toys, but on my birthday, I got 4 new HotWheels and 2 diecast cars. We have the understanding that the hobby doesn't come first, and that I do get 1 room in the house to work on and display my models and toys. I think of the 6 P's, Prior Planning Prevents P**s Poor Performance.

I think you are right about changing people.  Our hobbies are part of who we are.  My wife was fine with everything until money became more of an issue.  We don't have money to "waste" on hobbies right now.  I was actually the one who imposed this rule.  See, I can't even follow my own rules.Smile [:)]  She's become really clingy since she's become pregnant, inhibiting building thusly, and I understand.  When things settle back down and it's time to start passing this hobby on to our children I'm sure she'll let me do whatever I want.  When I was little I remember building with my dad and it was one of times that I really got to spend time with him that was one on one.  My brother wasn't there, my mom wasn't there the TV was off and the only thing that mattered was building something.  She's very understanding about alot of things, but we need money for other things right now and she's justified in the way she feels.  I just wish it wasn't like that.Smile [:)]  I NEED to get more and more kits, maybe an airbrush, sprue cutters......
