There has been mention of hiding the hobby expenses from the wife,
friends asking if he has any bad habits, baby on the way how can I
model (congrats Mortar
), along with many other obstacles
regarding our other half and modeling.
I'd like to say, my wife encourages me in the return to modeling endeavors.
When we first got together I was into all kinds of things -
Harley's, bar hopping (tittie bars), and hanging out with... well getting into trouble,
Muscle cars, racing at local tracks, heavy drinking... getting into trouble,
Cruising the beaches with the guys, street racing, ... getting into trouble,
Working in the garage until wee hours of the morning, ... getting into trouble,
Fishing - both fresh and salt water.
Breeding and raising fresh water tropical fish, I had 17 tanks in a small 3 bedroom apt.
Sometimes I'd zomby out in front of the boob tube and watch racing all day long.
Now she doesn't mind watching racing as long as I'm not in it and it's only for awhile on TV.
Child one came along! She passed away a few days later. I went off the
deep end and drank & rode heavy for awhile. Child two comes along,
hurray she makes it home. That meant a cut into my fun money, so I
started working longer hours. I was home less, partying less and still
didn't have money for "my" fun stuff. The race car went, bar hopping
slowed down to just Friday nights. Humm, she's upset still... so I take
a second job for more income. Child three comes along... AHHHH now
what? Muscle car goes and we get a family vehicle. The bike goes as
doctor bills are pilling up (lost medical insurance). No more going out
partying, once and awhile I'd stop at a friends and have a few beers
and play darts in his garage and BS for a few hours. Fishing... what's
that? Fish tanks get cut down to two small ones. Watching racing on TV?
Nope traded that in for Barney. Ok, so now I'm working tons of hours
and I'm never home except to sleep. We have enough money but wifey
still isn't happy. She wants me to spend time with the family instead
of always working. So I land myself a decent job that can handle all of
our finances and then some. She was happy for awhile but really wanted
to get back out and work herself. So I start my own business and mama
gets a job. I'm now doing the Mr. Mom thing. Whenever the kids get hurt
or needs to talk, they came to me instead of mama. Wifey quits her job
and stays home again. I'm trying to make a go of it with my business
(at home) so I start working long hours to meet deadlines. Kids go off
to school and I find out that it's getting rough. They have metal
detectors and drug deals going on. Down the street from our
neighborhood we started hearing gun shots from drug deals going bad or
irate boy friends. Enough of this life style, we move to NH from CT. My
ulcer clears up, but I'm still unhappy and the wife see's it. I go back
to working as a mechanic eventually and get hurt. Now I'm not the same
guy I used to be and never will be. Doctor advises that I take up a
hobby or two, do something not too strenuous for exercise.
So I'm back to modeling with my sons encouragement and my wife finally
got me a canoe. She isn't into fishing, but she goes out with me once
and awhile just to spend time with me. She picks models up for me when
she goes shopping. She's pushing me to start a hobby shop business
while I'm taking college courses again. We're having a bit of troubles
getting the hobby shop business started, but we'll work through it I
hope.
A very important lesson I've learned along the way, talk things over
with your other half. Don't hide anything from each other. Spend
quality time with each other. Hobbies take a back seat to a working and
lasting relationship. Once the bond and camaraderie is there,
everything else will fall into place. It's not what type of hobby you
do (though it might help) that needs to be dicussed with our other
half. It's the fact that we want or need something that we enjoy doing
and helps us relax. There's too much crap going on in the world and our
lives everyday. So if building models and/or watching fish swim in a
tank helps lower your blood pressure, good for you. And yes, it's been
medically proven that watching fish in a tank helps lower blood
pressure.
Sorry for the essay!
But I needed to vent and say thanks to my wife for always being in my corner.
"
Thanks honey for being so understanding and putting up with me."
Gee, I hope if she reads this it doesn't mean I have to have sex again?
"
But honey, we did it just last month... "
