"the stash"

    A related story... one of my inspirations.

    Growing up I spent all my summers On Long Beach Island N.J.  When I was 10 a family friend across the street had back surgery for curvature of the spine. He was only 16. He was stuck in a prone position while his back healed. His parents bought him a 1/96 Cutty Sark. I watched him build that Cutty Sark in spite of his immobile condition and probable pain. (He was undergoing Traction.). I watched him paint each copper plate (or maybe he added individual plates of real copper??) and then later assemble the parts and start to add some rigging. I saw the completed model the next year and WOW, it was awesome. This enthusiasm took hold and I went to the 5&10 and got a Charles W. Morgan in marbleized color plastic, my 1^st sailing ship. 

     Thank you for relating your story, it jogged my memory in a good way. Glad you are recovering and right back at Scale Modeling.

P.S.  After the back surgery he gained 2 inches and was a big hit with the local girls. (Don’t go there….it was his spine that was stretched.)

    Stash is still growing, hoping I don't have to call the X-Files to come investigate. Somewhere in the nieghborhood of 300. And before anybody asks yes I will build every one of them LOL. 

Thanks for the sentiments, armornut! I've been out of action due to unexpected back surgery in December 2017, and am still recovering from that. I'm hoping to be back at work by 01 Feb 2018, but that depends upon what my surgeon says when I see him on 30 Jan. Even before the back surgery, I was having a hard time sitting at the bench (or just sitting for anything), so I didn't get anything done modeling-wise for quite a while. Now that I can finally sit at the bench again, so I'm hoping to get back to decreasing the stash a bit. I was trying to get my two kits finished for the Monogram Mafia IV Group Build before all this happened, but I haven't even got the first kit halfway done........   Oh well, maybe next time.

My stash, if you wanted to call it that, was as big as about 45-50 kits. I also always had several kits of accessories and figures, but I don't include them as 'stash'. And then I started looking at them like Wirraway stated. So I ended up giving most of them to the troops. I sold a few too. Now, I still have a bunch of accessory and figure sets I'd like to get rid of and I'm down to three kits, two of which I'd like to sell. A 1/48 Tamiya F-14 and a Revell B-17. I also have a Tamiya jeep, but I'm going to keep that. Now I buy one and build it.

Cool thread! I've got about 175 kits (give or take a few - I haven't updated my list in about 3 months) in my stash, and that is getting to be way too many for me. 

Keyda, don't fret about the number of kits in your stash - I wish mine was only 21. I can actually remember when it was that low - right around 1999 or 2000, back when I first started building up my stash. I never imagined then that it would be this many now. It's getting to the point where I don't have enough room for them. Plus, I don't have enough years left to get them all built at the rate that I build (about 2 or three per year right now). Maybe when I finally retire, I can get them all built............

 Lol.  I'm saving that F-16 for my "Planes of Niagara" idea.  So far 6 of those in the stash are being saved for that purpose, and I'm no where, and I mean no where with collecting all the info I'm going to need, not to mention decals, and everything else.  Starting to think I bit off more than I can chew!

      Geez, it sounds like you may need to enlarge that stash to include a bunch of After-market items.  I didn't include in my total the AM things like PE and replacement resin parts.  I shudder to think of what my total could be.  I figure I've got to live to 104 and be extra prolific if I don't want anyone to inherit my Stash.

Yes I want to do one model of every aircraft that was ever stationed at the base here.  I have a pretty good list of all the aircraft(I think)but getting my hands on pictures and registration numbers is a whole different ball game.  There has been a bunch of different squadrons and wings in and out of the base over the years, so it's tough to keep track of when they were here and everything else! 

90% of my PE and resin is stored in the box with the model.  Only the very large sets and PE and resin items for general use are stored in a dresser drawer in the hobby room.

     I have ONE of those storage units. (It's on the floor of the garage-I’ve got to re-hang it). It holds a hugh amount of Nuts, Bolts and Screws. (There’s a joke about that- I'll PM Ya.)  You must have enough PE to put "PE on your PE" ...as the saying goes.

   Yes,  I can justify my stash except to the Wife.  I have made fun in various posts that I have to keep my massive model kit collection out of her view. Turns out, I am actually afraid, very afraid that she will see the totality of it. 

     I was lucky in one respect; I had planned my retirement years in advance so I was able to take OT, Bonus and Award pay to afford my kits without affecting our normal income. I can't do that now. And now I need to buy the Paint, resin parts, and PE not to mention wood decks, decals, blocks and Deadeyes. 

      I know I can't take it with me, the coffin’s too small and cremation of all these plastic kits will cause too much nasty smoke.

 I am not going to mention numbers here . I did that already . What I am going to pick up on is P.E. and Resin detail parts .

 You know those storage units you hang on the wall ? The ones with the two sizes of little drawers in them ? Can you say four of the twenty drawer units and one plastic box ? The plastic box is from a Mary Kay set . My Lady friend gave me the box for large P.E. sets .It's ready to overflow .

       That Lindberg Hood...   I blew mine up.  It assembled okay but did not look enough like the ship. It built fine and floated okay with some old SEPTA bus tokens glued inside for ballast. A fire cracker in the second Stack made it a more realistic model once it went off.

   And that's another reason for a large stash. With extra kits you can do "stuff".

   So, what should be the definition of a Modeler vs a Collector vs a Horder?

Looks more like an adults toy box

I have around 100 ....  scattered all over the place ! About 40 in the "trunk of death".

This last picture has non-modeling box's, full of 1/87 scale boxcar's,locomotive's,building's, and automobile's . The office max box has 15 or so boxcar's, the Dewalt box has 30 cars,truck's and a variety of crane's,tractor's, ECT ... ECT ... ECT ...

LOL!  My walk in closet is my storage area.  Being a widower, I don't have near enough cloths to fill a walk in closet...so instant storage area!  LOL!  And I keep some on the top of the shelves I have for display in my room.  I also have set up my small paint booth in the walk in closet.  I just pop the window open for the exhaust and I paint!

That's a very nice and organized bench area.  Nothing wrong with your stash.  Some very nice builds there.  LOL!  I hear ya...sometimes I walk into the closet and just stand there staring at the multiple kits and TRY to figure out what I want to do next.  I just did 5 kits on my holiday time off.  I'm doing the Polaris Capt. America for my 6yo son now.  Not sure what I'll do after that....real space?  More Sci-Fi?  Ship!?  Who knows.  LOL!

Ultimately, its a bit sad really.  I see these "Estate Sales" on e-bay, where an enterprising chap has purchased an entire stash from the family of the recently dear departed, (who want nothing to do with Dad's/Grandpa's/Uncle Frank's obsession) and then sells them off, piecemeal, on e-bay.  I think about the poor dude who spend a sizeable amount of time and money to grow his stash, only to never finish using it.  While a finished model may be a thing of beauty, there is something a little melancholy about a pile of kits that will eventually be built by someone other than the original purchaser.  I'm not buying anything more until my stash gets down to 5-10 kits.

The subject of our collections of unbuilt kits comes up pretty frequently around here. Some folks have stashes that are closer to 1,000 than 500!

Until their finished, I still think of them as "the stash". Probably more appropriate to think of the stash as unstarted though.

Nope.  If I see one I want, I'll get it.  So the kids get rich if I don't finish them all.  I don't want to pay an outrageous price on ebay for something I could have got easier and cheaper.
