Well, for the third year in a row I didn't get my Huey ride crying.gif The weather was just atrocious and the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation didn't even get any birds to the field. At least there were a few helos and the lack of people was taken advantage of as I took over 250 pics of these 4 Marine and Navy birds. If you guys want some detail shots let me know. I tried to get every square inch of external shots that i could and internals of the UH-1N and SH-60. Of course both were in "civi" clothes so to speak as all the armament had been removed from the November and the SH-60 was their "show bird" as they call it. If you want better pics of the markings I got shots of all of them. It looks like a interesting scheme. Finally, there are a few of two med flight birds as well. Sorry for the gloomy backdrop, but that's what i had to work with.

Sorry you didnt get your ride Rotorwash. I will tell you again how much fun it is riding in a HueyTongue [:P] In all seriousnes though, the AH-1W is very similar to the 1Z correct? I'm not an expert on choppers by far...but if they are pretty similar, I'll take all the pics you can dish out on the 1W as I will be doing a 1Z within the next couple months. Thanks!

Woody,

   Well since you asked I'll break the bad news to you.  The Italeri AH-1Z kit (I assume that's what you are going to build) is actually a 4 bladed AH-1W.  That configuration was flown but it is NOT a AH-1Z.  Currently there is no accurate kit of the Z.  The engine and transmission cowlings are totally different and the exhaust are turned 90 degrees like the ones on the AH-1W's above.  Th kit has the old exhaust.  The tail is different and there are lots and lots of other differences.  Just get a few pics of the Z off the net and compare em to a W and you'll see what i mean.  The good news is that the Italeri kit has the parts to build a straight AH-1W as well.  Just leave off the 4 bladed rotor.  Also, i am told that all Italeri 1/48 US helos have the rotors turning backwards.  There are others like Cobrahistorian that are more qualified to steer you towards a correct Z should you still want to do the scratchbuilding required.  I have seen at least one built that way.  Anyway, at least you know your options now I think.  Anyone else have other ideas?

Ray-I don't know why I never noticed that you hail from the Lovliest Village On The Plains.  I was there from '89-'96 and only left with one little piece of paper.

So in order to build a 1W instead of a 1Z, all that needs to be done is leave the top two of the 4 rotor blades off?

Actually there should be two extra blades included that are wider and longer,  Those are the AH-1W blades.  I think I have a set of instructions for the AH-1W I could scan and send you if you'd like.

I think I remember seeing those extra "omitted" blades in the kit (I'm too lazy to go dig out the kit!). No need to scan the instructions now, but when I get ready to do that build, I will most likely hit you up for them. Thanks!

Yes, the blades on Italeri's Cobra's are backwards, simplest method I have read is to turn them over, you don't lose much detail anyway or you could do a little work and correct it. The only other way I know of is major surgery on the head

Thanks for posting the images Ray. They are all beautiful images. Sorry you did not get you Huey ride. If it makes you feel any better, I got thrown out of the museum today because I went past the rope to take a picture of the inside of the wheel bay on the CH-37.

The only person who was there was the weekend security guard, or what ever they call him. Anyway I asked him if it would be all right to climb up on the H-13, because I needed better closeups of the rotor assembly. He said he could not authorize it so I said Okay and went and took pictures the best I could without getting on the aircraft. I got enough to meet my needs, although getting on the aircraft would have given me a better angle. When I finished with the 13, I figured I would walk over and get a picture of the wheel well on the 37 to finish off the day. I had to walk inside the rope area to take the picture and the guard came over yelling telling me I did not have permission to get in the display. I told him he told me I could not climb on the aircraft but did not say I could stand inside the rope area to get a better picture. I had told him earlier I have always been allowed to take pictures inside the rope and only needed persmission to climb on an aircraft or or open a cowling. He was just being a power jerk, and told me I would have to leave, so I left without saying another word.

Charlie, that wasn't right, taking photo's doesn't hurt anyone, I can understand not be allowed to climb on one

Hey John, I was disappointed because the guy did not know me but thet did not bother me and I went on and took my pictures. What irrated me was his getting mad when I was taking a picture of the wheel well. The museum has never enforced rules about going inside the ropes to take pictures as long as you do not climb on the aircraft unless someone is there to supervise. Like I said there was a thousand differnet ways the guy could have accomodated me and himself without being the jerk he was and why I left without saying a word, because I knew this guy was just going to be a jerk and nothing I was going to say was going to help the situation. Some people are just born to be jerks all their lives. Big Smile [:D]

Anyway, the pictures I got will work Okay. The Academy H-13 rotor assembly is really something to be dissapointed in. I'm scratching building a bunch of components on it to make it look more accurate to the real thing. I'm hoping I can post a before and after (but not painted) image tonight if everything goes smoothly.

Ray, as always, the door is open when you come down here. I'm not sure whether I will be able to get off Friday to hang out at the museum. I'm trying to get my project on the ARH done this week. I'm definitely going to try and take some time off if I can. I do have a bunch of images to give you from the last time I was able to climb all over the H-13 and I do have some other images. So at a minimum you have to come over if you can. If I can't get to the museum this week I do want a few more images of the H-13. I'll send you an email showing you what I need to capture. I just need a image from the top looking down to capture the framing around the top of the transmission.

One of these days I will need to set up an appointment with one of the staff so I can decowl one of the engine nacelles on the H-37. I bought a set of resin R-2800s engines and I plan on adding all the screens the kit does not have.

Those are missile plume and laser detectors.  Thyey have on the majority of the AH-1W fleet for the last 4-5 years.

The plume detectors were removed from one bird and present on the other. I was told they are frqeuently removed on CONUS birds and are easily replaced before deployment.

To make a long story short, I got a bachelor's in business there after changing my major three times, once involuntarily in liberal arts.  A very good friend of mine went through the vet school there and now has a very successful practice close to me.
