With good references the antenna could be made with sheet plastic.

Italeri does have the VIetnam-era OH-6A out at present as well. I just picked one up a few months ago for about $15. Great kit!

Lee,
You're right about the D and H model Hueys. The H model had the T-53-L-13. I've crewed both. As for external differences... it's a safe bet that if you find the pitot tube in the nose, It's a D model. All H models I've ever seen had the pitot on the front of the cabin roof.

I would love to see both 1/48 and 1/35 CH-47 and CH-46 as well as the upgrades from the Boeing Vertol line of military helicopters the aurora kit is not detailed enough to make a really nice Hook ........ Former Hooker C/c.. in Nam ...132nd ASHC ..23rd americal Div ...14th CAB ....16th CAG ...I have multi media 1/48 ,Hook from Roberts Combat models ..alot of work to make it look like the real thing with resin and white metal parts its a nice kit. I would like to get an old aurora kit though , just for reference on the lines as a template I crewed the" Virgin Hunter" from 1970 -1971.... its in ..... Squadron signal 's series.......Chinook's in action 1979

A really nice kit of a Hook is one with forward pylon doors open with drive shaft covers .... open to the combining transmission with.... aft pylons doors open {aft pylon doors are just alittle aft of the rotorhead and are always opened post or pre flight } .We used a wrecker truck for removing an engine with engine panels open to lift the engine off the bird ,after all was disconnected to replace engines {when engine is removed there are alot hydrylic lines and fuel line various eletrical bundles removed from engine coming up from engine cradle mount} ,with nosebox driveline covers open and disconnected from the engines .The engine mount bolts where removed and replaced with the bolts the engine mounts,to a bracket we used to hoist the engine were then again replaced with the bolts to lift bracket that was attached by a cable to the wrecker boom and lifted and move to a engine case on a 3/4 ton truck to take to the allied engine shop .After so many hours on the power plants this a ideal scene of a Hook on the ground being serviced in combat .......Flight Engineer and Crew Chief having all the panels open and quick disconnect undone and working on a CH-47 A ,B,C, or D model aircraft ......There are many little neuances such as on the different airframes.... as antennas or covers on the engines early models operated without them in nam As ,and Bs as well as super Cs ...... To have a really nice kit large enough to provide enough detail would be nice for a change .......Guns A GO GO where just not practical the lost to the GUNSHIPs due accidents was to much ,one even shot its self down was not good plus the before a CH-47 can take off it has to engage a clutch type device to kick the torque in to reach 240 rotor RPM to move... These heavy GUN SHIPs had to run down the flightline to gather speed with both rotor heads forward to take off .. like a Fixed wing to get off the ground fully loaded . They just did not meet the army's needs for fast nimble gun platform like C model huey's and Cobras just some thoughts Pepperfly50

Starting the APU on a Hook you have power to all systems ,then you can start your engines once the blades start turning increase the power on the turbines .You let out a clutch like on a car once engaged the blades increase in speed ........ revolutions per minute very fast ,at 240 rpms you can pitch your rotor head and start moving or lift off ground being fully articulated rotor head you have yawn ,pitch ,and roll on each blade and rotorhead .The C model had a flat butt aft pylon where as the As and Bs came to a sparp edge at the end of the aft pylon . Above the ramp on aft pylon is the exhaust for APU some of early models had HF antenna running down the left side of fuselage .....In the middle of the cabin is the Hook a door opens forward on the floor of the deck exposing the cargo hook . This is operated by the flight engineer .Crew chief is always on the door on right side of the aircraft at a M-60 mount ..Gunner on left side at M-60 station some missions had stinger gunners on the ramp at a m-60 station . The aircraft commander or AC was always left seat . Pilot always the right seat .There are antennas under the forward part of fuselage VHF UHF and so on as with the lights, 2 forward runway lights and a strobe in the middle further back under the fuselage. The battery is in the nose panel or chin bubble. The radios on the left side of the companionway just aft the cockpit by the gunner's station . Fuel tanks are ahmidship on both sides between landing gear pepperfly on the CH-47

The Ch-47 has 5 serperate transmissions and drive line forward transmission in forward Pylon this connnected to the combining transmission ..At the center of the aft pylon ,Another drive line goes to aft transmission and from engine ,there are on each engine a nosebox transmission with drive line going into the combining transmission on each side from both engines .Always a pre flight inspection would require the crew to inspect all panels all bearings in drive lines on all transmissions as well as checking the chip dictectors on all transmissions and fliulds The blades are alway walk into certain postion on a post flight inspection and tied down .This can give some idea of the maintenance requirements of the crew before or after flight, This will help decide on diorama setting for detailing your Ch-47

The inside detail of the cabin is much like that of aft loading cargo aircfaft with troop carrying capability with 2 rows of seats .From forward window to aft port hole. the ramp is simple when lowered the top portion of the ramp retracts into lower section ramp. There 2 folding legs of the ramp that fold onto the ramp deck itself or can be folded out for vechicles to enter cabin area ,such as trailers or jeep water tank .This not very common use of cabin. Troops are the main cargo within the helicopter I have great deal information on the Ch-47 as with other rotor wing aircraft .................vgatliff@comcast.net ..............................Pepperfly50

Fitter asked: "But a CH-53 or HH-3E??? (In 1/35th scale) Too much to ask for! Or izzit?"

I should think not, since Matchbox has a kit out of a 1/35th French Super Frelon. That is at least the same size as a Jolly Green Giant.

I build 1/72 scale Helicopters, and recently posted a few photos of some of my kits. My no. 1 choice on my 1/72 scale wishlist is the Mi-26 Halo. I'd love to have one of those in my collection!

LOL... that Super Frelon is the old Heller kit, if I'm not mistaken. I remember YEARS ago, when I lived on the Left Coast, my bestest buddy worked at San Antonio Hobby Shop, and he could have sold me as many Heller S.F.s @ $5 each as I wanted! I took it for granted and never got any at all!! (kicking myself all the way back East...)

Anyone make a 48th kit of the AH-56 Cheyenne? Used to have the Aurora 72nd kit, but was a bit too small.

It will not be the HH-53C but it will be the MH-53M. And we will produce it in 1/35. Coming this year.

How 'bout a 1/35 Chinook and an Aerospatiale Dauphin--a military version, not one of those Coast Guard ones!
Ohh cmotz you cut to the quick!
As a retired Flight mech (and later rescue swimmer) on the HH65A Dolphin, I remind you the USCG is a branch of the military in the US, (though denied by the other four services. . .).
I do agree, we could use a USCG version of the Aerospatiale, now Eurocopter, helo. Trumpeter's kit is a version of the 365N aircraft, the USCG has the 366G version, subtle, yet very evident differences abound.
I would like to see a 1/48 Sikorsky S62 (HH52A) made also.

Don
I know it's only rock and roll, but I like it.
