Andy, had started to follow this build from the beginning and was really enjoying it but have not checked in for some time now.  Man, what a pleasant sight to come back here and see such a beautiful build!! She looks FABULOUS  The display base looks great also and really enhances the Huey.  Very well done YesBeer

My cousin is looking for a large-size model of a UH-1 H or D. He flew on them in Nam. He retired in '76 in Germany and is coming Stateside in May to visit. Any help in locating a kit for him would be appreciated.

He told me so far he has only found 12 inch size and he want a BIG one.

12" sounds like 1/48 scale.  In 1/35 (as Andy built) or 1/32 scale (about 1" longer), the fuselage is about 14 1/2" from nose to tail.  That is the largest scale model of a D or H Huey you will find.  There is a UH-1B in 1/24 that is about 20" long from Revell/Monogram.

For anything larger, you will need to look for something in the range of 1/18 scale toys.  They are OK, but are not scale models.  Their details are simplified and they tend to be more chunky to be able to be played with and not break them.  They are also pre-assembled and pre-painted.

Good luck.

Thank you. I was hoping to come up with one for him. He sent me a plane ticket to Germany last year and picked up the tab for most of what we did during the month I visited. He did 2 tours in Nam and only the end kept him from a third tour.

BTW - you have a wonderful museum at your Fort. Stopped in on a trip back from Florida once. It was downright awesome!

If you want to get one of the 1/35 Hueys, look for either of the Dragon kits (UH-1D Vietnam, or UH-1H German Heer).   They both have the same basic parts, just different extras and decals.  They will build into pretty nice Hueys.  Go back to the beginning of this thread to see some pointers on how they can come out and what needs to be fixed on them.

The museum here is nice.  They are supposed to be getting a new building soon that will be much larger.  They have a bunch more great stuff in storage due to the small size of the current facility.

WVInnKeeper- Those Dragon Huey 1:35 kits are the way to go!  You can find them on eBay for an older kit UH-1D if you want to go for Vietnam Era but you will have to cough more money!  Some vendors are accepting back orders if Dragon is really going to release that kit again.  It may be easier to find the newer kit for Dragon UH-1H Heer from online vendor for much less like Gino stated earlier.

Rob- Glad you had the chance to check on my Huey.  I know you have been very busy lately.  Appreciate you dropping by my friend! Beer

Kevin- I haven't forgotten about you and your request... I haven't seen my friends since the show.

Hi all. That was my old unit patch as well. Havent seen that in 30 years. Was in D1/81 56th FA Neu Ulm Germany. I probably meet that fellow years ago. From what i can remember we had a few different types of helos fly in and out of there and i do remember a couple of black ones from time to time. We were the only unit with live tactical warheads. Just thought i would throw that out there.

Hey Andy,

Wow! I knew you'd do good as you build some amazing pieces but this is just amazing! I honestly think it is just superb Bow Down

Cracking attention to detail, perfect weathering, a great blog - you deserve Beer x 10!

Star Star Star Star Star out of Star Star Star Star Star!

The amazing thing is you are a tracked amour modeller and you have just nailed this helicopter build! KILLER!

Now then, enough praise - you head will explode. I wanna see more of that StuG!

Well done mate - your friend will be sooo chuffed (he better be)! Make sure you tell your Wife to mention in conversation just how much time you devoted to this thing! I'd struggle to let this go but your buddy's face will make it all worthwhile!

I'd like to make a Helicopter. Seeing as my interest in the Nam conflict got me into WW1 & WWII 'Hobby History' and then modelling A 'Nam themed build is well deserved. I also quite fancy a more modern 'Little Bird' from Black Hawk Down (Sorry but I don't know the name of these-what are they called?) as in 1/35 they wouldn't be the shelf space killer of a Huey?

I'll pm you in a minute,

Ben Toast

Ben - this is a great Blog to follow for a UH-1 Huey.

If you want more info on the MH/AH-6J Littlebird as used by the 160th SOAR in Operation Gothic Serpent, Somalia 1993, aka Blackhawk Down, check out this thread.

Hello everyone. I would like to start by saying, thank God I have finaly found people that know what they are talking about. [ this is not aimed at the folks with the questions]. In 1979 I joined the Army and my MOS was attack helicopter crew chief on the ah-1s- mod s- production s and ecas.  B troop/ 6th Cav. 7/17th bgde. ACS at Fort Hood. I OJT'ed to the huey as well. Our unit had a strange mix of these. I eventualy went on to flight status , so I'm very familiar with the types. You guys are spot on. I have no problems with the US Marines at all, nothing but respect for all branches. I do wish someone would produce a 1/35 kit or conversion for the ah-1 s  series. I am currently building the academy aw-1w and it's a pretty good kit from the box. I would love to see the uh-1d done in 1/35th correctly. I hope I didn't offend anyone here[ not my intention] . thanks

ah1ecas - sorry to disappoint you, but this thread was last updated three years ago, and the people who wrote most of it are no longer around - this also includes the original poster (OP). I for myself would love to see your builds here on the forums, and it's always good to have people around, who know the real thing well - but it would be better for you to start a new thread. It wouald also be valuable if you posted photos and drawings (TM?) of the machines you know. When you are modelling a Huey, it's suprisingly hard to get references - I guess you could help here. Anyhow - welcome to the forums, I'm looking forward to see your posts and have a nice day
