With many, many hours in the UH-1 family as a CE and TI, I totally agree with HeavyArty and others on the fun side.  Most units like the CE on the left side because that's the side the tail rotor is on for clearing and while on the ground protecting individuals from walking into it.  While in combat I sat in the L/H gunner's well and normal flights on the L/H outside seat of row 2 (the five seater in front of the transmission).  The UH-1 was a very forgiving aircraft; an old saying of "I can get her home with safety wire and 100 miles an hour tape" was not far from the truth.

Keep em flying

Wow! Must have been scary to sit and fly a strange machine.

Not scary at all.  Super-fun is more like it!!  I love flying in helos!  The best is sitting in the door w/your feet hanging out over the edge into nothingness.

I just might have to get this one and build a slick.

My favorite seat was back in the corner next to the transmission. For no real reason sitting all tucked up there made me feel safe.

I have never seen a 4 seat row one in any military aircraft.

I have been on at least 1 US Army UH-1H in the early '90s that had the rear-facing 4-man seat.  I have also been on a USAF UH-1N that had one as well.

Huey638
Also the luggage compartment is a civilian option. Every UH-1D/H/V I have built, I had to putty up the luggage compartment.

The Revell kit correctly does not have the luggage compartment.

Along with the subject of seating - 1 man seat, jump seat, or medical attendant seat all names used for the single seat in row one; if the bird is call the MIL ID of UH-1D or H, the single seat should be included.  I have never seen a 4 seat row one in any military aircraft.  Yes in the Huey II (optional equipment) or the civilian Bell 205.

Also the luggage compartment is a civilian option. Every UH-1D/H/V I have built, I had to putty up the luggage compartment.

CMK does a Cargo Bay set that you could probably use.   It includes seats and their support poles.

The rear-facing seat is wrong though.  It should be like the one found in the original Revell kit and the Panda/Dragon kit.  CMK seat on left, Panda/Dragon parts on right.

The forward-facing seat is good though (CMK left, Panda/Dragon right).

A better look at the whole set can be seen here: http://www.aeroscale.co.uk/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=236224

Ah, OK.  When I saw your title, I was hoping it was a long-lost, unpublished "Tips on Building Dioramas" from Shep.

...a replacement canopy for the Cobra that looks pretty good. Forgot the name of the company...

Werner's Wings makes a properly shaped, vac-formed canopy for both the 1/32 Revell/Monogram AH-1G and the 1/35 Academy AH-1W.

Thanks, Dave. I ended up with two of the original issue Revell Huey Cobras. :)  My uncle bought me one of them (I was bidding against him LOL) and then I got a decent deal on another one. I'm a little disappointed that I won the auction for the second one when the newer release (from the early 2000s?) Revell AH-1G was available for only $19; would much rather have the decals from the newer kit...

I'd better not get that eBay app... far too dangerous having access through my PC as it is! LOL

Hey qcarr,

You're a better man than me!!! I can't leave that eBay app. alone....it's like a drug when you can find good deals. Always look for kits for sale in "lots." Generally, you'll get a good deal on a good selection of kits.  Some folks are just looking to get rid of their kits because they've got a few years on them, or they are part of an estate sale. Ebay also has a replacement canopy for the Cobra that looks pretty good. Forgot the name of the company, but it should come up if you search "1/32nd scale helicopter kits."

Good luck with your build!

Dave

just need to pick up some crew figures to replace the 2 in the kit.

The Bravo6 Pilots and Door Gunners are really nice figures that would fit it perfectly.

I just received an order from them on Monday. Big Smile Got the US Army in Vietnam decals and the Resin AH-1G Conversion kit with the replacement tailfin (my uncle's Cobra "Sopwith Camel" of C Troop, 7/1 Cavalry had a right-hand tail rotor).

I'd like to build an AH-1G as close as possible to my uncle's, but this may be a project a little beyond my current skill level... wish me luck!  And thanks again for your help! :)

If you are looking for other/more decal options for your Cobra, Fireball Modelworks does a set that is really nice.

Very exciting news that Revell is re-issuing this kit!  I got it from a model club (the company sent you a model every month like a book club) back in the mid-70s. I was way too young to put the kit together correctly, but have always wanted to give another try. :)

Is there any chance they'll re-issue the Cobra AH-1G?  My uncle flew one in Vietnam in 1970-71 and I've been trying to get my hands on the Revell kit for a while...

Hey qcarr,

My advice to you would be to check eBay regularly for a Cobra kit.  I managed to pick up a couple this past year at a very good price.  One for about $12 and one in a package deal with the UH-1D and a few other kits.

If you have a smart phone, get the eBay app.  It will be easy to track Cobras when they come up for bid.  (The app may be TOO GOOD!!!Big Smile

I don't normally build helicopters, but I feel like I need to get this kit.  I teach a high school history class on the Vietnam War, and I show We Were Soldiers and talk about the use of choppers.  It would look pretty cool in my classroom dressed up as Crandall's bird.

Ordered on on the bay for under $21 shipped.  Will order out the guns and seats tomorrow.  Closest LHS is 25 miles away and they don't have much of new releases for awhile.
