Jon,

Looking good!  For some reason, though the background is in focus, but not your bird.  Nice pic of the scotch tape package, though! :)   Do your refs show the red bench seat in the TOW birds?  That's something I have never been able to tell from the pics I have.  Keep up the good work and knock 'em dead on the hellfire test!

Hey guys,

Not much of an update.  Been studying for my HGST exam tomorrow.  Should be a piece of cake, I just need to get my Hellfire ranges and modes down.

I did do some work on the bird today.  Finished the control panel and installed it. I'm pretty happy with it as a first effort on a scratchbuilt panel.  I probably should have detailed the back of it, but no matter.

I also added the windscreen tonight.  This is gonna be a royal pain in the butt.  It doesn't fit.  The lower seam does, but the doors are angled in too much so they can meet the nose.  I'm frustrated, but I think I can get it to work.

Next step will be the door windows.  Not looking forward to this either.  The clear parts on this (other than the chin bubbles) aren't great.  I plan on having the windows lowered though, so I'll be able to modify the parts to fit.

The TOW sight and toilet bowl exhaust will be added on Saturday when I get home.  Once the sight is in place, I'll close up the cabin, putty the crap out of it, sand a little and start masking for paint!

Certainly sounds it!  Randie and I have a massive trade in the works, so it looks like that rotor head will be included!  Thanks Randie!

Thanks for the good luck wishes on my checkride. I've been having some issues flying front seat at night under the system.  I like the back seat and the PNVS a lot better.  Flying with a TADS picture is...umm.... difficult.

Jon,

Best of luck on your checkride, but you know building Hueys beats studying any day of the week!  please let us knwo hoe the scratchbuilt panel comes out.  So do I undertsand correctly that you have your rotor head problem solved?

Ray,

I was gonna use the Eduard UH-1D PE set.  It has a panel on there that is accurate enough for this build.  Thanks for the comments on the pods.  If you look at the front of the pod here:

You can see that all three tubes are equidistant from one another.  My pods are just a tad too shallow to allow that.

They aren't terrible, and are certainly passable, but if I'm going to really do them right, they need to be more precise.  Then again, I did these with the good old Mark 1 eyeball as my measuring tool, so I'm not too disappointed.

I think I'm going to scratchbuild the panel.  Just need some time to do it.  I've got a checkride on Tuesday night, so I'm gonna be doing a LOT of studying over the next 2 days!

Jon,

I think your being a little hard on yourself about the TOW pods.  I am hard pressed to find any faults with them from the pics I have seen.  As for the control panel, who makes a 1/48 PE panel for the B model?  If you have the time, why not give scatchbuilding it a go.  That should occupy you far a little while at least!  Please post more pics soon.  This build is getting interesting!

No, no roaches.... Crickets.  EVERYWHERE.

Unfortunately, the BOQs here don't have very good lighting, so I set up on the sink/dresser counter top and shot pics the best I could.

I'm not 100% happy with the pods.  The mounts came out perfect, but the pods are a little too shallow and possibly too wide.  But then again, this is just a 'killing time' for fun build, so I'm not too worried.  If I were going to reproduce them, I'd definitely want to do them a lot more precisely.

I need to finish the cockpit details.  I've already added the black boxes on the cabin walls, overhead switches and circuit breaker panel and the blanket "curtain" that came down behind the pilots.  Gonna do the air vents on the floor at the front of the cargo doors today and we'll see what else I can cram into there.

Its frustrating because I can't finish it until I have the TOW sight and the toilet bowl exhaust, both of which are at home.  I need to figure out whether I'm going to go with a PE control panel or if I'm going to scratchbuild one.  What do you guys think?

Jon

Randie,

Too cool!  Picked up a DC-6B today.  I'll get the other two kits within the next week or two.

In the meantime, everone, enjoy the pics!

I think you may be on to something there. I'd hate to ruin a kit, just to steal some parts from it, but if you've got a spare rotor head, I'm definitely interested.

Lemme know!

Jon! Jon! Jon!!! I know you don't want to wait BUT, I believe there is going to be an extra "D" rotor head and blades in our little "deal"!!! Big Smile [:D]

Jon,

You may not remember, but way back in another post when everyone was taling about accurizing the Huey Hog as a Charlie model, I suggested the B model conversion would be as easy if not more so using the rotorhead frm the Esci or Italeri kits.  Yu are right about wasting a kit, but, then again, the italeri D model isn't exactly a gem if I understand all the reviews correctly.  Also, if you were highly motivated yu could mold the rotors and rotorhead and cast them in resin to replace the ones you stole.  If you want 'em from one of my kits, you got 'em.  It's the least I can do to help with your TOW bird.  Just send me your new address and I'll get a kit in the mail.

Jon,

Sounds like yur making some serious progress!  How about using a 1/48 UH-1D rotor rotor and rotor head?  All you would have to do is shorten the blades and add counterweights.  I have several of the Italeri and Esci 1/48 UH-1D kits.  Let me know if your interested.  We could definitely work somehing out.  Good luck with the rest of the cnversion and get some batteries for goodness sake!

Sorry guys, I flew a 2 hour flight on the system tonight and I'm beat.  Didn't get batteries, but I did get aluminum tubing, which allowed me to do the TOW tubes. I've got the right side mount done and the structure for the right side pod as well.  Just need to do the cradle assembly and I can mount the second pod.  I'll get batteries tomorrow, I promise.

I just talked with Jon and he was getting ready to make the rounds of the hobby shops and to get some batteries. Hopefully, when he returns from his foray, he will post some pics. His only complaint was that his camera doesn't do good close ups.

I'm looking forward to seeing some more pics myself.

TOW Huey in 1:48th!
Posted by Cobrahistorian on Friday, September 21, 2007 3:16 AM

Hey all,

Well, I've gone and done it.  All of this talk about the TOW Hueys got me thinking and I figured it wouldn't be too hard to scratchbuild the XM-26 system for the Monogram Huey Hog kit.  (I know, I know, I can hear the snickers already)

So, I started the other day in a moment of weakness.   First thing I did was cut out the engine armor panels from sheet styrene.  Piece of cake, this is gonna be an easy conversion!  Next was the external TOW sighting turret and mount.  Again, piece of cake.  I just laminated some sheet styrene, sanded to shape, and voila!  TOW turret!  I even reshaped the ADF antenna on the roof!  I'm on a roll!

Of course, I then realized, this is a UH-1B.  It needs a completely different rotor.  Oboy.... so, I cut the blades down, re-sanded the airfoil and boom... two blades!  Of course, the pitch horns are different and are giving me fits, but I think I've got one done.  That was all over the past few days, bringing us to the present.

Unfortunately my camera batteries died tonight.

I actually built the left side TOW mount and pod tonight. We got weathered, so I didn't fly tonight and had a spare three hours to kick around and do nothing. So, I put em to good use working on my Huey.

The mount was a lot easier than I thought it would be. The basic S-curve was just two pieces of sheet styrene bent to shape and softened with liquid cement. Once they were in the proper shape, I laminated them together and sanded them to an airfoil cross section. The end where the pod attaches has a very distinct, beefier cross section to it, so I added two additional pieces of sheet styrene to that section to get the proper thickness. It mounted to the airframe a hell of a lot easier than I figured it would!

The pod itself is just about finished. I decided to build it as a box, rather than as laminated styrene. Its lighter this way and won't pull the mount off of the airframe. I got the basic shape down pretty well, although I think the downward angle on the forward end is a bit much. Because of this, it forced the three tubes into an isosceles triangle instead of an equilateral one (they're just a bit more squooshed together than what they should be). I'm going to get some aluminum tubing at the LHS tomorrow and do the actual tubes and aft ends of the pod.

The rough part was the cradle assembly that attaches to the pod and to the mount. I basically just cut styrene into two wishbone shapes and then glued strips between the two wishbones to make the whole saddle assembly. It is kinda crude, but it works. Needs a little filling on one side, but it looks really good otherwise.

At this point, I've got the following to finish building:

1) Right TOW Pod
2) Right TOW Mount
3) Associated wire and hydraulic lines for both pods
4) TOW gunner's sighting system (parts that are in the cabin)
5) Toilet bowl exhaust
6) Rotor head

I'll be stealing the Toilet Bowl exhaust and the TOW sighting system from one of my Cobra kits. They'll be modified as needed for an accurate representation. The second pod and mount will be just like the first set. Should be pretty easy. The only real challenge left is finishing that UH-1B rotor head.

After that, it's an overall OD coat, followed by SEA tan and black camo pattern and a beautiful ATTACK HELICOPTER TOW TEAM "Whispering Death" patch on the nose!

I'm not so sure I like the tail rotor, so I may modify it as well, since it has this big donut in the middle of it instead of pitch change links. We'll see....
