~Quite the prduction going on--painting 14 figures at once---- but again, I 'm not rushing to finish any
one this way, and often colours can be used elsewhere, or adjusted slightly and I have a use for it on the next Gent in line...
Don't believe you always need a little pointy brush for painting figures!
"Always use as big a brush as possible" Words of wisdom from reknowned Dutch painter Deni Ponty, who I many years ago once apprenticed with. This will lay paint more evenly, avoid brush-marks, and actually conform to features better as above.
I'm using a 1st highlight with downward brushstrokes --similar to drybrushing--but with far more paint on the bristles to get coverage on tops, but allow the shadows to survive. It's at about this time of course the wife has to pop-in here and ask- " why are you looking at a picture of a guys butt?" (Oh boy) "'Because", I calmly explain, " I am showing something about the painting " {Now you are looking at it too!---for the same reason........right?!)
Of course the Missus is completely facinated with me and my models......You can see it in her eyes.......
~~Of course, switching to a pointy round brush at some point is a great idea, to make sure all detail has been reached. Often at this stage its advantageous to turn the brush perpendicular to the folds, to hit only the edges.
Follow the creases out to thier ends and blend as much as possible--at least avoid any paint build-up (you may want to reach for that flat brush again at these points to smooth)
Huck Finn here has gotten the same highlight color over different base colors.
The battledress trousers are always a big challenge to make look right. Having used a lightened 141 English Uniform as base, I can use 141 straight as 1st shadow, and then darken it a bit for the area right under each fold.
~Still, I went for a bleached-out, sandy look to them so they don't stand out too dark khaki.
I gave this chap a faded black cap and blond curls--I'll have a better picture up after I've got him more finished.
~~~It's a long job blogging such a big project...I'll just keep going along with faith that people may be interested in the details--I know there are very many----& it's gotten crazy long !
