Diorama Group Build and Contest Roster

Howdy Hans,

  Please consider this my official sign up. There will be no actual models in my build, figures and figure  accessories only. So if it sucks, at least I will go down in flames  first serious build in 20+ years, and looking forward to blowing the dust off the *cough cough* skills. 

  Even started practicing my casting in preparing for this build, after twenty years away, I can still create a ruble pile to rival the best of them. Now if I could only cast a d***ed brick

and cast the bricks in plaster...add a drop or two of dishwashing deterget to the plaster to reduce bubbles and let it set. If you like you can tint the plaster before casting.

That will be the next step, I made my first mold out of styrene, and it was just a little to stiff to pop anything out of, not to mention my plaster mixes where off as well. Like I said, blowing the dust off after so long, got a bit of a learning curve to get back up to speed here. Thanks for the idea and suggestion Vespa!

casting my own stuff is my next big step, just need to get around to getting the RTV and Resin.

Anyway, i am officially submitting my build for this GB. It will be Dragons 251/17Ausf D.

The kit itself was built 2 years ago for the 251 GB. As you can see, i added an Eduard PE set and Armourscale barrel. The gun is still to be secured, as i need to add figures, and the vehcile needs fitting out with kit. It was painted with Tamiya Acrylic. This was my first attempt at an oil wash and it came out darker than i expected. But i think it will fit well into the Dio.

Heres where it stood at the end of the GB, and how it looks now, plus a nice covering of dust which is going to need blowing away.

I will give details of my planning process when i start the Dio.

Vespa, are you in or out? Your work would fall into the "Miscellaneous" catagory, I'd wager..

If crossovers are allowed, I'm in...

Define, "Crossover".. Is it a diorama for another GB? (NO-GO) or just models that're crossing over? (GO)

Sub-H: You need to make the sides of the casting box removable. I used tape to seal the corners. Then when the silicone has set take off the sides and pop out the rubber mould.

Hans: I am right now about to start two new builds, so I can enter, and the time scale is about right. I'll be making a model of the ground...outside MoMA on 53rd street; the second is outside 121 Innerbelt Road Somerville. You can count me in.

I'm definitely still in on this!  My dio will be some sort of WW II airfield scene.  Have a few ideas, still trying to find some pics online to firm up what I want to do.

I'm definitely still in on this one Hans. The genre is Sci-Fi, but there are no vehicles involved, just figures and (what I hope will be ) a killer base. Not sure what category that puts me in.

I''ve never done a group build and I'm not sure of the proper edicate, however I would like to try this one. I'll likely do something construction or agricultural oriented. I have just started to scratch build a Lombard steam powered log hauler/snowmobile. This could well end up as the main subject mater for my dio entry. The story line will come after I get the model built. It will be in 1/25th scale

So basically, he says that a diorama is a model on a lanscaped base.  However, he also says that a diorama, in it's "most developed form" is a story.

 So that means, although a good diorama can be built with just a model and some figures, a great diorama is one that tells a story, be it with or without figures...

Look slike we have a nice variety of subjects on this one. I reckon theres going to be a lot to learn here for dio builders old and new.

  Sorry, for the confusion, my dio entry will be military in nature, but will not include any military vehicles. It will how ever make use of military figures. And depict (hopefully) a military scene.

I started my project last night. In the spirit of full disclosure, the main subject is/ was a half completed model that I completely took apart and hacked up. It has traces of old paint on it which kind of play into the theme, but it will start from all the same original pieces.

That's me with the blinkers on, on the freeway shoulder retrieving that nice piece of plywood in the median.

I would love to do one of those German flying boats, but could never think of a decent dio. Now you have given me ideas.

Would a piece of would cut from some old funiture i had salvaged be cheap enough.

Woulda dinged ya on the dio.. Over-hanging the base borders is a no-no...   It's a great entrant for a "display model" though.. Whar scale is it?

First of all: Welcome to FSM and welcome back to the hobby! We can never have enough of "our kind"

Just measured a brick in my wall in front of me and it measures 21.5x8x10 centimeters. Had to guesstimate the depth but theyre slightly wider than the heighth. Should be usable for WW2 bricks too. The older (medieval era) bricks are about two thirds of this size if i think about walls i have seen from that time in town.

Kveldulfr Welcome back to the hobby, and welcome to the art od the diorama. I am sure you will pick up a lot of ideas.

I just went out and measured the size of bricks in our house, which was built in the 30's. They are 21.5cm longx7cmhighx10cmwide, we had some headers so could measure the width as well. So about the same as Richards.

ATTENTION

All participants, please note changes to rules 12 and 13.  

 Due to the fact that some will naturally be larger or smaller dio-builders, I've split the dio categories into larger than 225 square inches,  and smaller than 225 sq.in... You gotta pick which category you want and build ONE dio..  The prizes remain the same, except that they'll be awarded to a winner and loser in each of the categories, meaning I just doubled the number of prizes.  (gulp) I gotta shell out for..

Don't need to post which one you're building in, that info will not be needed until final juding...  Size-limit remains 36" x 36"... (Aplogies to those on the metric system... I don't have a metric conversion calculator)

Got my Shep Paine book today. There is NOTHING in there about the subject overhanging the base being a bad thing, but you own the table, you set the rules.

If its too late, no worries, won't stop me from building!

I've got my bases cut and all my prepatory drawings done, and as a bonus I found some reference photos I thouht I had lost.

Is there going to be a badge for the group build?

I won't start the base until I get the engine built. I'm in the process of salvaging a glue bomb version of the Monogram 4-4-0 "The General" in 1/25th scale. The original builder used massive amounts of tube glue. Many of the parts are distorted and useless. But I think there is enough there to build a reasonable replica of a Lombard steam powered log hauler. Parts of the original kit are testing in my freezer. Hopefully the joints will seperate without more breakage.

Fortunately the saddle tank will hide a lot of scars

There's a lot of very subjective stuff in the book, hereafter referred to as HTBD.

But I am an artist first and not much else second except a business guy.

When I made model railroads, which are dioramas, it was always a matter of course to build a 1" to the foot maquette.

Not here, but at one-to-one I get the idea.

In HTBD he talks a lot about mocking up stuff and standing back and seeing if it looks right.

That has me now at 16" by 16" so I am in the second group.

The most striking thing I've learned from HTBD is a tip about how to use photos. The author allows that a good photo is a necessary starting point, but that the modeler should only take away the story, but not the literal image.

This made a big difference for me. I understand that the photo I have conveys a certain story, but that the diorama may have to tell it a different way.

I've done abt 20 GB's, and this is a fine one for me because I will really have to learn new things,

Generally, it's best to have complete or almost completed model(s) before you start the base.. Oftentimes it's needed so you can adjust the terrain levels, base-size, and get rid of any issues that keep the model form sitting on the base properly (ie., no "floating" wheels and such) So you're trackin' fine..  Post pics as often or as little as you'd like.. 

Okay, awesome, I'll let you know what I decide on, it'll most likely be armor in 1/35

Well, dunno about "joint efforts", but if he feels that you won't slow him down or mess it up, then sure...

On a more serious note.. How old is he? I'm assuming that he's fairly young, although older kids have interests in dinosaurs too, it's generally confined to the "12 & Under" age-group.. (Mine's 10, and he's a bit past that stage, although he was a fanatic about 'em only a couple short years ago) 

Some dioramas are going to be military subjects and may very well be rated "R" simply because of the possiblity of graphic violence if a diorama contains combat scenes and/or the aftermath, which almost always involves casualties and blood being modeled...

I won't "limit" the violence level of the others' dioramas to "PG-13" (although they may freely do so themselves)...  So as long as you are willing to explain the scenes to him (if he views them all) and that they're only models, then, fine... Just so ya know also, there is no "Junior Category"...

Think you're onto something, but rmember that it wiil need to be legible at about 1 1/2 inches x 2 1/2 inches..

When you go to edit profile and insert media you can change the size of the image. But I can make a smaller one if you think this is going to be the official badge. I guess we should see what others think of it before you decide. Maybe someone else has a better idea.

I wasn't talking about the size being too big for the siggy... I meant that the badge needs to be readable and the picture viewable for what it is when it's thumbnail-sized...

I would like to join this group,

does EVERYTHING of the diorama need to be scratch built. like building ruins . I have 3 different ideas, one in 1/35 that would include a ruin kit as well as my tank and figures, the other is a variation on a theme, either a Japanese airbase or a Japanese airbase that has been taken over by the US. The latter would include a Nissen HUT kit IF all dio components must be scratch it will be the Japanese airbase.

No..But everything is going to be looked at and judged, right down to the base itself... Every part of a diorama is simply a part of the whole thing, same as the hull is to the turret of Tiger Tank...

Scratch-built or "store-bought" doesn't matter... However, "Scope of Effort" is one of the things in my judging criteria..

The entire dio is a model... So everything will be looked at, same as if I were looking at a single display model...

DT, I'd love to make comments on your ideas, but I feel that would be coaching on my part as judge, and therefore not  exactly "cricket"...

Whoever sent me an Email a few days ago regarding this build, could you re-send it? Somehow, I lost it in a "Deleting Spam" frenzy and it's in the deleted stuff file, although that file contains some 2000 emails... I'm admittedly embarassed for doing so..

Might have been a bit overzealous with committing to this contest... Looking at what i am planning for the coming year it might get really tight to get a "shep paine book winning" standard diorama running from the assembly line....

So, with sincere apologies to all the participants and our gracious host but i am afraid i have to pull out of this one after all.

As for my project, I think I'm gonna go with a 1/35 Huey and figure dio, but I'm still hazy on the specifics.

• Hi, I don´t know if is much too ask, but in the forum of Fine scale model magazine there is a model group of dioramas and some of the guys are designing a badge, and one of them uses a part of the cover of the 2nd edition of your book as backgroung, but we are waiting permission from you because it's you work (I think someone of the group has contacted you already). Do you think is ok if we use the cover for the badge?

Sorry I have been absent. I've been in and out of the hospital twice in the last 6 weeks. Looks under control now.
