Over a Barrel
Posted by Leddy on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 2:48 PM
I am painting some worn, dented German oil barrels with acrylics . What color do you recommend for a base color and shadows? Any suggestions for weathering the barrels? Thanks for your input! Leddy

Ah ! Methinks they were a dark grey or grey green . Kind of like some of the uniforms . A little rust here and there , Dry - Brushed around the rims and bungs would be appropriate . This also applies to the stiffener rings as well .

For items like that, I either go for green or yellow. I use Tamiya XF-11 for the green and XF-60 for yellow. I would then do some dry brushing, an oil wash with raw umber and some chipping especially around the rims and rings.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

In addition, don't forget ........galvanized Surprise

At least they looked like this when (relatively) new. They tended to oxidize to a light to medium grey, just like an old steel garbage can;

Panzer grey, dark yellow and green are also possible.
