I suggest you go on-line and look at pictures of Marines in Iraq and/or Fallujah.  Find a pic that you like and try to base your dio on it.  Right now you seem to have no real idea what you want and what should be in it.  Post the pic you like here and then we can give you pointers on how to build it.

For the uniforms, MARPAT was in use when the war began.  Some Marines still wore/wear the standard 3-color DCU as well though.  Either one would be correct.

The biggest operation for the Marines in 2004 was in Fallujah. With that in mind you have a lot of options for a diorama base.

i might use "over there" and a few other idiot box images as a guidline, or just make the road and sidewalk and not the buildings.

Pretty ambitious and big.  The HMMWVs would be dwarfed by the buildings.  For the buildings, I would recommend plywood or balsa.  Draw it out on them and cut the piecs out for the walls.  Cover them with spackling compound (wall plaster) and then you can scribe details into it once it dries.  Smoothed plater for the street as well.

Good luck.

Its really up to you.  The dio could be small with the two HMMWVS pulld up near each other off the roadside.  Road could be dirt or hardball.  For a convoy, usual sapcing is at least 50 -100 meters.  That wuld be pretty big in 1/35.  Buildings can be made out of plaster, balsa wood, plywood, balsa foam, etc., etc.  Really depends on what you have in mind.  Look at my M2A2 ODS in OIF dio for ideas.

i was thinking of doing a dio of marines in iraq around 2004-2005 involving a m1046 and m1025 (with .50 cal) fireing at unseen insergents and with a few infantry doing the same. my question is how big do i need it if i'm going to have 2 humvee's in it (usual formation spaceing for patrols) what to use for the road and what do use for buildings also the extent of damage i will have to portray?
