Group Build Idea... "Wasting Away"

Terry here, got some work done yesterday, heres the pics, lets call it an update, the water effect is going to take a few days to dry as it consists of a lot of actual water in its solution.

How am I doing ? Well all my plans have gone out the window for now at least, we're having some trouble with the weather over here its all gone mental with the heat. in my workplace today the thermo read 38 degrees which is a little hot even with the window open and fan blowing full, still hope to start as soon as the weather cools a little.

Am very sorry to hear about your loss.  Please don't feel ya have to rush a model project, eh?  That's why I figured best to leave this as a somewhat open build, wrapping up at the end of the year - IF we feel it's accomplished its purpose.  It could go on indefinitely for all I care.  Take time to observe those things of life that are of most importance... and yes, modeling is not necessarily that - nor is sitting here staring at forums all day, eh?

Welcome aboard!  You showed interest, and can consider yerself SHANGHAI'D into service!  Got you on the front page roster!  And thanks for the good word, I really thought the build idea would be something different and yet still focused in its own way, yes.  And of course, I have personal interest in learning from this.

As for me and my work, I think I will stick with my original plan of wasting this Gans model.  This thing is really a cool looking kit, and I can justify giving it the works, after all, what better way to honor a model than to do it all out in what ever way you really want, eh?

Everyone else!  Where/how/why are you doing?  Been quiet, and I understand folks taking all the time they need to evealuate their plans.  Just curious and would love to hear from ya all!

Well was going to try get some progress reports but it will have to wait till next week, a friend of mine passed away, so I have to go to a funeral.

And I cracked open my box last night... rather, my son picked up the package and he and Mom opened the package...

So, I get home, and they met me out front because we were rushing off to see "Pirates"... We walked because the theater is just two blocks away.  After the movie we're coming up the street and I say, "Phillip, could you pick up the package at the post office?"

Phillip says, "No," and naturally I'm a bit concerned by such a response.

Mom says, "He can't do that," and I sit here thinking quickly, "huh-what-huh?" 

After which, I think "duh!" and say, "Oh, he got it already?"

"Yes," and as I ask if they looked in, sure enough they had, and the first thing they saw was pages to a Hong Kong magazine having a half-page ad for scantily clad Chinese "pleasure girls"!!!! 

The model was packed in a box with shredded paper, lined with magazine pages of some sort - looking like a catalog for auto stuff - oil, stereos, etc... but also a half-page spread of numerous phone numbers and pretty Chinese girlies obviously intended to ... well anyway... Mom was quite amused at the idea of giving me a bad time about "porn numbers from China."  Phillip, 15 yrs. old, was quite embarassed by the whole thought of talking about it as I teased and tried to make light of the event. 

As for the model, the kit looks very nicely molded plastic, with lots of parts and details.  1/20 scale is pretty fair size.  I am more accustomed to small stuff, so this is cool change.

On the "hmmm" side... I don't know if I want to make this thing into a rusted P.O.S. anymore!  This is a really funky looking model and looks like it would be more fun to create in action.  So, I have decided to actually take this bugger and put it into a scene, and pick up another Ma.K kit to waste away on the beach, with this unit walking on by.  A sort of "old battle site revisited" theme.  Am going to scrounge and see if anyone online has any partial kits they don't want, and do it that way. 

Therefore, that's what I am gonna do, yup yup yup. 

Anyone out there have any 1/20 scale partial models of Ma.K / SF3D genre, that you want to dump?

I checked my mailbox and got a package notice from the post office, so my son has the errand of picking it up today.  Tentatively - should be the Ma-K Gans I ordered on eBay!

Will know soon... soon... When I get home tonight!

started on the AT-ST today  just working on smoothing all those terrible seams and gaps

going to find a base for it then ill start on the rest 

going slowly as a broke my right hand last week and even cutting sprue hurts but i will survive

Terry here, seeing as how I have a minute before I go out to the back garden again,

The ground was built up with styro foam (scrap) the mud is model rail ballast, mixed with a very sandy gravel which I found covers a carpark in wicklow. For the bank I mixed up plaster with white glue and tamiya kakhi paint, and literally plastered it on, and before it got a chance to dry I sprinkled some of the carpark gravel over it.

Well I'm off to the garden, because its too hot in here.

Well Aric, i havent started on mine yet and wont be til after August because of my move, but i got some ideas and i just might change the suit, I might just go with the PKA instead, or an AFS.

Do we have a badge yet??

My Ma.K Gans is on its way from Hong Kong, and am guessing will see it Monday.

Well Aric going to let some more outta the bag, it will be called "The secret Playground", from the front you will only see a hedge, but behind it will be a heavily sloped bank, maybe some tidal river at low tide.

At low tide because I want to put a high tide mark, ie. lots of caked on muck.  I am going to the dolls house shop to try get a miniature pram for the little girl also I have some small scale
Presier figures and believe one of the females will do as some kind of barbie doll in her hand. the little boy will have a fishing rod ( Maybe), the children are from the SOL range, my mate GIT gave them to me the other day. the hatches are going to be missing and the inside detailed. The Hull was cut just above below the fighting compartment and the hull will be standing between 60 and 90 degrees. The ground work will be done by the weekend and the inside of the vehicle early next week.

Am going to assemble some of the indy links to put on the vehicle broken.

Sorry forgot to give dimensions, 135mm X 135mm, river 20mm deep approx, ground height 60mm.

Hedge about another 20mm. maybe I'll forget the hedge and do it behind a giant road side poster.

Well now, am really curious to see how your rusted beach-hulk comes out, because we seem to be right on the same line. 

I just recently joined a Ma.K site and discussed my Gans model project there.  I sounded off there on the idea of having a couple of kids playing around my model, too...  Seemed like a really cool idea.

One thing is certain - nothing wears away metal hulks like a good sit in the ocean.

Terry Here, just a quick check in, I like the rail road idea, a Locomotive would ber a superb subject, I served the first year of my apprenticeship in a school that was in a rail yard and some of the old hulks I seen would bring a tear to your eye.

Any hoo, I started the ground work yesterday, I going to include two figures of children, playing around the half sunken hulk of an American M3 in Soviet service, so it would have been abandoned or lost in the eastern front Theatre. More with pics soon.

As for your model idea, that would be an AWESOME project.  I, being a railfan for some time now, would really love to see a rusted old hulk model like that! 

Does that make you a "maybe do" or can I chalk you up as "gonna git 'er done yupyupyup"?

And, I just paid for my Gans!  Now gotta wait for it to fly to me... twiddle-twiddle go the thumbs...  I think I may just rust-up one of those Hasegawa kits in the meantime.

gulfstreamV:  Very cool idea.  Got you on the build list at the beginning.  I always liked the look of the airplanes long forgotten.  There's a sci-fi art book I have from when I was a teen, called "Spacewreck - Derelicts of Space" that has a lot of images that are reminiscent of abandoned and delapidating aircraft. I used to spend a lot of time looking at the art in it and appreciating the rusting, moldering crafts... the derelicts floating in space... etc.  My current build idea actually stems from those pondering times... though I wasn't thinking of that when getting started - it is obvious in hindsight.

Everyone:  No feedback on GB Badge?  Guess I'll do the damage myself then, and submit the idea to ya all. 

Terry has suggested to me that we might want to migrate to a new thread to focus on the models as they take shape.  So, what are the thoughts on that?  A new thread with progress posts as the main focus? 

I know that I will be a bit before I receive my own kit and can start, though I am a little concerned about it getting to me at all - coming off eBay and out of Hong Kong... but I may get rolling with something based on one of several other 1/72 WWII armor kits I have that are sitting in need of attention.

I feel a little guilty on this build project, because I did kick off another build in Sci-Fi months back and then somewhere along the line it got lost, even though there were a number of folks involved.  Part of my own blame is that I never got far with what I was working on... Somewhere along the line it just dropped off. I only hope I can be forgiven for that. 

Hey Aric, Tery here, I see this GB. is gathering momentum, great. I liked thte bit with the Eagle Transporter.

I dont know if any body knows but I have 4 Studio replicas of this ship in 22inch scale as kits, they are my pride and joy.

Hey Aric, i got a few kits i would like to use, but dont know which one? i`ll let you decide, i wont be able to start until late August or September due to my moving into a new house.

awww I would say that any form of weathering would be good.  The big thing is what the wiles of time do to that whatever  that's been sitting out in the elements for who-knows-how-long.

Rust is, after all, only one dominating means of wasting away.  If you consider my own project idea... We have a complex mechanical unit comprised largely of metal and probably plastics, that has been sitting on a beach, probably washed up from deeper waters.  Looking at the weathering on this would include:  Rust rust rust.... breakdown and corrosion of materials, fading and cracking of paint, and damage from wind, sun and rain. The subject will most definitely be at least somewhat buried by the sand and gravel of the beach. On top of that, the ocean provides some other rather unique telltales of time's tolls:  Barnacles, mussels, seaweed and such.  That sort of stuff, while not a direct result of breakdown, is definitely a factor that contributes to the condition of the modelled subject.  Most likely I will want to see if I can show water pooled around it, maybe a splash from the changing tides.

The Space 1999 Eagle shown up above, while not rusting, definitely has signs of age and weathering through it's scruffy, discolored appearance and obvious tellings of lack of maintenance - missing bits and such.  I would say that model, while obviously completed prior to this build getting going, should get some sort of "honorary recognition" as it does provide a variation of the "wasting away" theme.

So, I would say there are definitely many forms of "wasting away," including rust, cracking, fading, wind-erosion, dust and sediment build-up, moss/algae/lichen build-ups, etc.

So jump in, show us what ya got in mind and lets run with it?
