Hopefully these might help.

Also usefull is the oil streaking, especially in the last pic.

Also, I'd recomend pointing the tail gun barrels up, not so much because of accuracy or looks but to keep them safe from getting broken off.

Any ideas on what color to use for the turbo chargers?  Instructions call for a washed out tan, what the heck is washed out tan??

I used a mixture of burnt siena and burnt umber on mine, leaning more toward the darker side. I'll get a pick up tomorow.

The pictures help a lot it looks like the turbochargers were put there first and they cut around them. Just cuz of the sloppy cuts. Panzer826 the best thing is to experiment with dirffrent colors till you find one that looks right I think. Iike metallic gray flat earth flat red

Here's mine, I still have some work to do, mainly clean it up a bit, but the exhaust parts themselves are done.

I went back over some that were already done a few years ago, way too orange, look better now.

Then, this is the group of wings for the 4 that I'm still working on.

Hi all!

New to the forum, but thought I'd post a few pics of a long term project I'm working on:

She's going to be a 1/48 scale B-17B, circa August 1939 and I've been working on her slowly since January 2012.

I've definitely spent a lot more time researching the -B than actually building... so many questions!

I started with the Koster C\D conversion  (and actually had started building a -C model), and have been trying to learn some new techniques along the way. I'm not the best scratch-builder, but I sure do enjoy it. If she ever gets completed, she's going to be lit up with some fiber optics.

This bulkhead is the level of detail I'm after -- a long ways away everywhere else!

Definitely a long ways off...   I had started the framing back when she was going to be a -C;  and then cut the enlarged opening for the blister.

Going to need to redo most of the framing around the turret. This is the sliding part of the turret test-fit in place -- I haven't put any of the turret framing in except for the edge of the sliding part. I am going to be putting the slot-cover in place on likely all three turrets in lieu of cutting the slot -- my attempts to cut the slot on a test piece didn't work that well.

This is the slot cover -- the bracket seen at the right will be on the other three 'dots'.  On the real aircraft, the cover was placed into the slot from inside the turret, and then the brackets rotated to fasten it to the slot-frame.   Embossing aluminum to represent the frame with cover in place is a lot easier than making the separate pieces in 1\48 scale!

Here's an example on the real plane:

thoughts \ tips \ comments welcome!

Cheers,

Trystan

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on Finescale. I'm not new to modeling, or modeling websites for that matter, just this one. I'm currently working on the Memphis Belle in 1/48th scale. I know it is pretty cliche as a build, but for me it has some history as my grandfather was a Navigator on a B-17G, and I had the pleasure of meeting the pilots of the Memphis Belle with him when I was a teenager. I also got to take a tour of the real Memphis Belle when I was about 11 or 12. I wish I had taken pictures!

Anywho, It has been an on and off project for about the past 7 months and I have been meaning to post pictures on here but never really found the time until recently. I hope everyone enjoys them!

I was looking/dreaming at a Visible B-17G that I have in my stash. I was wondering what adhesive to use to join the solid and clear fusalage halves together?

Thanks for any advice on this question.

I want to build the Revell B-17F hanging from the ceiling and a Monogram B-17G on the tarmac. Has anyone swapped the open cowl flaps from the F kit with the closed cowl flaps from the G kit. I realize that such a swap would also include the cowls, engines, and possibly the props.

Thank for sharing your experience with such a swap.

Shipwreck, I just used Testors tube glue and it worked fine and does not mar or craze the clear plastic. However it does make a visible white joint that I found distracting, so I simply masked the clear half off and painted over the seam just enough to cover it.

Are you trying to have the cowl flaps closed on the F or open cowl flaps on the G? If you want open cowl flaps on the G, Eduard as a engine detail set that gives you the option to replace the closed cowl flaps with PE open ones. This requires surgery to the engines.

If you want to go easy the entire wings can be switched at the fuselodge joint.  This takes care of the cowl flaps, engines and such.  Just put the right tires on the right aircraft.

The F kit comes with open flaps. I want to replace the G kit closed flaps with the F kit open flaps and park the G kit; and then put the G kit closed flaps on the F kit and fly it from the cealing!

Best thing to do then, is to put the -F wings on the -G fuselodge and the -G wings on the -F fuselodge.   Put the right engine/cowls on the right wings. Don't forget to fill in the holes for the external bomb racks on the -F wing if you do this.  Also note, might take a little tweking of the joins to get this to work.

Sorry pilot, I disagree. Just swapp the engines like you want shipwreck. They will be just fine. This set of wings was done just like you want:

The ones with ARMY on them, cant really tell from the pic, but I did it. Not that complicated really. Going through the trouble of swapping the entire wings will be a PITA, as the wing joins on each kit are entirely differant. The ones for the G are awesome, they pretty much lock on and hold firm. I have 6 built B-17G kits and none have the wings glued on, makes em alot more portable!

I honestly preffer the G kit by far for the way it goes together and the level of detail. When I want a B-17F, I backdate the G kit.

So, just swap the engines and you'll be fine. You may have to sand or fill to make them fit better but they work. And like pilot said, fill the external bomb rack holes, but swapping the G wings onto the F fuselage is completely un-necessary and way more work than needed.

So, I take it this is an open-ended (no start or end date) build???

If so, I got a G that I'm planning on starting in the next month or two, and I'll post my progress.

See that's what I get for doing it on memory.  I thought the two engine mounts where different, oh well.

Yeah, its an open build.  Join anytime build a Fort, post pics of progress, and then of completed build.  Buy another B-17 and repeat process.

B-17 Guy is right, I used the F cowls on this G and it was a near perfect fit.

Not sure sure if this was the original crew or not... the tail gunner is listed as S/Sgt. Robert C. Blake.
