B-17 for the heavy, Douglas B-26 for the medium (3+ wars and still going in some far-off places.)

My vote ... just on looks and performance ... not results, (glad we never really found out if it could take the big one to its target ... not that anyone really doubted its abilities) is the ...

Convair B-58 Hustler

... a very cool looking aircraft. Cool [8D]

Just my $.02 cents ...

The best bomber ever to take to the sky was and always will be the AARDVARK F-111 & FB111 Aircraft.

I think history's already made the decision for us - the venerable B-24 Libererator was produced in more numbers than any other aircraft (of any era)

But I would have to agree with what was said earlier - nothing says sleek like the XB-70 Valkyrie!

B-58 Hustler. Just awesome. Best regards

I too have to agree with the B-58 Hustler. I built the Monogram kit when I was a kid and just fell in love with the sleek look.

I gave the B-17G, B-29, and B-52 serious thought but sleek, sexy and fast is where it's at Big Smile [:D]

Without a doubt my most favorite bomber was the B-17G Flying Fortress. The queen of the skies in world war 2.

I love the B-1, but it's hard to deny the Blackjack. I remember seeing the XB-70 in Dayton. My dad and I just stood and stared at it. We walked all around it and ran our fingers over the landing gear. I recently heard a journalist got a ride in a B-2. Lucky bastard. I'd kill to ride in a B-52, let alone a Spirit.

The B-36 was a monster. I have the 1/72 Revel kit sitting on the shelves. Just waiting until I feel confident enough to tackle all the metal surfaces (and that damned canopy).

Of the old bombers I'd have to say that B-17 is my favorite, although the B-24 holds a place in my heart. We have a small airfield in the city I live in and a few years back a B-24 flew in. I wasn't around to see it, but I saw the pics. Bring a tear to your eye, seeing that old warhorse come lumbering in.

Mine are the B-25, and the B-29. Modern would be the B-58, and the B-1.

My vote goes to the "B-40". Wink [;)] That's what the P-40 was referred to as in the CBI/PTO because of it's pressed service as a mud mover.

If I had to pick a favorite "real" bomber, though, it'd be the He 177 Greif. No particular reason other than I just like the way it looks.

WWII: B-17G Flying Fortress
Modern: B-2 and B-52

These 3 planes changed the history of aviation. There is not much debating that. I have to agree with steelblue that a ride in one would definitely be awesome.

How about a vote for the B-2? I saw it up close for the first time on New Year's Day. It was on its way to a flyover of the Rose Bowl football game and it flew right over my friend's house at a very low altitude, followed by a pair of F-117's. That is a menacing-looking airplane! And you don't hear anything from the plane as it approaches except for a very quiet sssshhhhh...Only after it was past did it finally make the racket you normally would expect from a jet. I later heard from another friend that he saw it pass over his parents' house. Scared his kids half to death! :)

Favorite is the Fort. But, a sleeper 2nd is the B32 Dominator for WW2. Post WW2, the BUFF rides high, but I vote for the truly graceful bird, the B47 Stratojet. Takes one's breath away.

I,m affraid I will have to choose 2, one American and one British. In the USA's corner we have the B-17F ( I always think the chin turret spoit the planes lines somewhat), and in the British corner the LancasterApprove [^]

Anything give you the idea that i dont like/trust/belive politicians?.too right i don't. sorry for ranting....Gregers

Well, in response to everyone's opinion.....YOU ARE ALL DEAD WRONG!!!!!Wink [;)] The Lancaster beats em all!!! why else do you think my user name is Lancaster_lover? let's face it, the B-17 had a lousy bomb load. RAF Mossies could carry more than the "Flying Fortress"!!!Wink [;)] Good defensive fire power, great speed, AND it carried the 22,000 pound Grand Slam bomb. It would be impossible for a B-17 to carry such a munition.

Lancaster, B-26, B-29(no leathers and wool needed) B-1, B-52!! Tu-22 Backfire, and Tu-160 Blackjack. Honorable mentions, the A-20 Havoc and the A-26 Invader, a hot rod. How about some of those drawing board german jets...and of course the Thunderchief!
