Call me crazy, but I have always loved the elegant look of the Zero. Just a really cool looking plane.

I've always loved the beautiful lines of the FW-190. However, it must have been a terrifying sight to see it from your "six".

OK, If you keep being off WW2 topic, I'll vote for an F4B with any of the beautiful decoration to be found aboard Vitnam era carriers...

I would have to go with the P-51D for number one, but the F-14D is a close second. Spitfire and Mirage 2000 get honorable mention.

Though if we strech the definition of a fighter...I think the T-38 may be the best looking aircraft of all time.

Well, since the topic wasn't WWII specific, I'd have to say I've got a few.

WWII: Ta-152C
Korea: F-86F (was there ever a doubt?)
AU-1 (there is just something about all that power!)
Vietnam: F-4C (gotta love the short nose Phantoms)
Modern: F-15E (I know a lot of you are gonna say "why not the C?" Just doesn't fully do it for me. Gotta have that ground support element in there too!)

Ok, so I'm a bit Ameriphilic, but still, they are great airplanes!

For me it would be the BF-109 or the FW 108 as my favorites, after that I would have to go with the P-38 Lightning or the P-40 Warhawk.
Again this is just my My 2 cents [2c]

Oops indeed! Well for WWII, I'd say... The Kyushu J7W Shinden.. But the Rafale is still much better looking!

It's a toss up between the Twin Tailed Devil and the Viper, something about the leading edge A/C for their times has got me spinning

I have always liked the P-51D Mustang, both for performance and aesthetics.

For reference i suggest u look up a magazine "Flight Journal Aug. 2003 issue". They have an article of the best of the best fighters of WWII, the first is based on the European Theater of Ops and the second in for the Pacific Theater of Ops.

Personally i'll go for a P-38 lightning or P-39 airacobra based on uniqueness. The P-51 mustangs based on the operational history and finally the F4-U corsairs for the naval ops.

Hope to have been of valued help.

although i love the sleek lines of the spitfire for me it's got to be the Hurricane, it may be workmanlike but it's certainly no ugly duck. Greg

I find the sleek lines inherent of a fighter visually pleasing. About the only ones I never found as "eye candy" to be ones of British & Russian design. I still build them, though.

Call me goofy (and I'm sure a few of you will after reading this post) but I think the P-40 was the neatest looking fighter. That Monster spinner and the big intake below the prop. It just looks cool. This is a very subjective subject and I'm sure there's going to be lots of different opinions. The F4U corsair, FW-180, and P-38E were also nice looking.

Best looking fighter
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 25, 2003 1:02 AM
Gents,
I am a newcomer to the forum and don't know if this topic has been addressed in the past. Sorry if so. But I'd appreciate any opinions on which was the best looking WW2 fighter. I'd be hard pressed to choose between the P51D and the Me262, perhaps 55% the latter.
Best regards from Spain.
Alvaro.
