tiffy!!!! hawker typhoon academy 1/72
Posted by bsyamato on Monday, May 24, 2010 12:16 PM

Hi!!

bought another academy ww2 kit

the beautyfull typhoon.

Started this kit with idea to built as oob..... this idea was immediatly changed when i started the work:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

first cut on the rudder

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

physically the wheels don't match in the weels then proceed with cuts .... even flaps out!

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

some test fitting , drilled out shells holes and cut on radiator rear

definitely not oob Crying

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

start painting cockpit..... and insane idea to show the 24 cylinder napier sabre engine comes in my head...

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

.. so the cutter worked on the engine covers......

for who's intrested in engines details i found a good site here

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

adding details on wheel weels, main and tail

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

added some extra support, after i cutted flaps the wings came out of original position without this extra pieces.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

added engine bulkhead and moding pilot seat

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

finishing cockpit

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

time to glue

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/typhoon hawker academy kit 1-72:550:0]

Who is ChuckW!!! Oh dear... Another great scratchbuilder on here. Have a look in the aircraft section for a Me410 build. There is some amazing stuff in there.

Your Typhoon is shaping up nice. I built the same kit, probably 8 years ago, out of the box. Keep up the great work Bsyamato,

That is the build he means.  Chuckw is a an professional artist who is an extreme detail freak about realism on his planes, but it ends up with them being absolutely stunning works.

Big Smile he he

thanx for the compliment friend!!!!

I tri to put on this scale (and other kits that you know ) all i can do for realism and details but..

sometimes here comes some error .. when i replace the main gear weels ,put the structure strips in wrong way Bang Head as show this picture of the real at the primeportal site .

Soon i'll put a computer on workbench ,for reference consulting, that will allow to finish also the he-177 twin engine .

Long time without updates.. finally a bit of time to post something:

Started to detail flaps and to correct the orizontal rudders:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

rudders was a little under dimensions with draws that i have, then with plastic sheet and CA glue some correction was needed

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

flaps stuctures and rudders correction done:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

and flaps movable parts done from scratch :

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

soon others updates

Engine!!

Engine scratching starting from these pieces:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

then using tamiya glue:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

at this point surely this not seems the napier sabre engine...looking at others airplanes engines i think this is one of the wrongest to start my first scratch a of an engine... Bang Head

Tons of pics of real needed to understand how to do it. Founded good pics at Engine History org

Then proceed to shape the raw plastic:

Unfortunately i was without camera for long time, so i have no pics of intermediate work Bow Down

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

I have detailed only one of thetwo sides of engine, theother side where valves are, is not visible.

used a great variety of plastic heet and rods .

Engine castle completed whit rods joined even with internal metal pin to fortify the structure.

In all steps needed to try the fitting with the rest of kit:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Time to face the complex compressor:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

that's all for now, lots of others update are done but few time to write.

Very impressive on what you have done so far.  I just picked up a 1/48 rendering of this from Hasegawa.  I like the level of detail you put into this scale....I look forward to the finished product.

many thanx for comments !!

Time to put some color on the fuselage:

from now i've changed camera to take pictures.. left the nikon d50 ,  i've brought a kodak z981.

----------------

i preferred to not use decals for invasion stripes so i painted it whit enamels.

all colors are from humbrol and model master enamels.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Firts i draw contours whit a pencil, then as ever, used  50 cents brushes to paint it.

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

After drybrush whit darkest colors:

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Flaps and gear doors

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Wings yellow stripes

[View:/themes/fsm/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

That's all for today, i wish to soon finish this little fighter and put next target on my he-177 that need two engines to scratch Dead

For typhoon engine i'm not sure for the correct color of it and relative bay. Pics i have show the engine painted in orrible green and others in light steel ......

Soon others updates

Awesome work mate, and brush painted OMG, I have trouble doing as well as yours with an airbrush Embarrassed.

As for the camera how do you find it? I used to have a Kodak P880 and loved it to death, until one of my kids spilt a drink on its focusing/lens area, would of cost me more to fix than it was worth.

Thank for comments Andrew.

For z981 question: first of all d50 it's a digital SLR , and z981 it's a bridge class camera, then she have a lowest image quality but not so low respect the nikon . kodak have more than double of pixels (d50 6MP, Z981 14MP).

I have it from few time and actually try the manual settings to take pictures and need more study on it.

Can made even HD video. I brought the kodak because the D50 is not only mine but shared with a friend for work, then needed a camera free of work duty.

I hope to learn more about manual settings, latest pictures of napier engine is toke with completely manual setting with manual focus and macro subet.... she have lots of setting to discover Embarrassed . I found it at a very lo price ,195 € with battery, battery charger and other accessories.

Thanks for the information, when I replaced my P880 (seems like an earlier model of the z981) I didnt know Kodak still did the psudo DSLR, might keep an eye out when I replace my current camera IME they do a better job than the low end canon/nikon DSLR at a cheaper price.

Super-impressive, more so considering it is 1/72.  I consider the Typhoon one of the better looking British aircraft of the WWII. Looking forward to seeing the completed article. Thanks for sharing.

Long time no talk man.  That plane is a beauty, when I was skimming the finished pics the first time before taking a closer look I thought the outside pic from behind was a reference photo. top notch job!
