Anyone interested in another group build?

I don't think that the Marines fly the Bronco anymore, BUT, I could be wrong. I often am.....just ask my wife. The last time I saw one of them fly was at an airshow at Cherry Point, NC, back in the late eighties. They were performing a MAGTF (Marine Air/Ground Task Force) demo, and had an OV-10 start an almost-vertical climb, then the rear hatches opened up, and either four or six paratroopers tumbled out the back. It was really cool to watch that stuff. Looking forward to seeing your Bronco.

Yeah, I've seen some pictures of that. It's amazing to see! Well I guess I'll have to do some research on how the last version looked.

No, we don't fly broncos anymore. nowadays, airborne FAC duties are done mostly by 2 seater 18s or Cobras (aside from the obvious attached FACs)

Thanks for the info Matt, do you know when they stopped and what kind of paint they wore at the end of their service?

They were retired in '95. At that time, I believe they were wearing the Green/Black/Gray and 3-tone TPS schemes. I've seen some in overall gray, but I believe those were USAF a/c. There were some in the Gulf with two-tone sand over blue schemes.

All right guys, I decided to take a deep breath, walk into the LHS, and go with their selection rather than fight it out in my head and online. I just could not decide. So while they had the F4 monogram, it was not the correct model for the USMC, and the Tamiya one is a 1/32 for $120.00, YIKES!!!! So, to stay within the budget and theme I went with the Tamiya 1/48 F4U-1/2 for only $23.00. Now I only have to decide wether to model the F4U-1 version, or the F4U-2 Night Fighter....and wether I'll go box-stock or Aftermarket......hmmmmm.....Damn decisions!!!! Glad we have 'till July!!!

BTW Gary, maybe we should restart the thread, or convince management to make it a 'sticky' topic, and put it near the top as a USMC group build.....perhaps more people will join in the fun!!!!

ANYONE can join in, even if you ARE a squid!! Just kidding!! Glad to have you along. As was mentioned earlier in this thread, just build a USMC aircraft, any scale, any brand, any aircraft (fixed-wing, helo, VSTOL, etc.), and post a picture of it here in this thread on 30 July 2004. That's it. Simple stuff. I've finally decided on the AMT 1/48th Grumman F7F-3N Tigercat. I HOPE I'll have it finished by 30 July!!! Good luck to everyone!!!

That's a toughy James, I usually order online(Check your welcome aboard thread)....There's one in El Cajon that's pretty good, as it's nothing but models (no RC or anything like that) But it's a bit far for me, so I go to Hobbytown usually 'cause I live down the street from one. Oh, yeah I just looked ya up on the map, you're near El Centro, so the one in El Cajon is the one that you'll want to go to. I think it's called Mike's Model and Craft Shop (At least it was until it was bought out by someone other than Mike, but that's all that it's coming up in the listings) the info is: (619) 444-8297

Just call and ask for directions, as they can get you there better than I can, but it's right off of the freeway, so it's pretty easy to find (right by an IN-N-OUT!!!!) Hey Heath, No luck on that phone number. Maybe they changed it the number belongs to a tax company now. The guy who answered said he thought that hobby shop had gone out of business. I will do some more checking around.

Sorry about that James, it was about 6 months ago that I was down in that area. That's a shame. Unfortunately, I haven't been to any others down there, because I live in the North County (San Marcos)...and I have 3 LHS right down the street, but that would really be a drive for you (it would add about 45 min). You can try a search on www.yellowpages.com which is where I got that bum #, but maybe there are more in that area. Good Luck!!!

Thanks to everyone who has decided to participate. I'm very much looking forward to this, as it's my first group build. Hopefully, keeping the rules simple will help everyone have fun with this project. This isn't a group build to see how a particular kit goes together & discuss its pros and cons: it's just a group build to have fun, and maybe learn a little history along the way. And never hesitate to ask for help & advice with your project through this thread. I'm sure everyone here will be glad to help in any way that they can. I will e-mail the forum administrator today to see about making this a sticky thread, so we don't have to constantly search for it everytime we log on.

There are still a few more hours left for 31 January 2004, so, if you want to participate, or know of someone else who does, I'll leave the registration open until midnight tonight.

Good news though, I found a Hobbytown in Palm Desert (90 min away) so I drug the wife along I was able to get the Tamiya F4U-1D and some other stuff that I of course couldn't live without. LOL Talk to you soon.

I just got my Omni 5000 AB yesterday, but I have company over for the weekend, so I haven't been able to test it out just yet, but I may sneak a spray in the morning!!! I have decided to alter my F4U-2 with some PE parts I'm ordering on mon. and a resin seat!! I'm glad you were able to find your kit at the "local" hobby shop, so tell me, what do ya think??? Are the molds and everything what you expected??!! I find that Tamiya suprises me time and time again. I'll let you know how the new airbrush works out...have you tried yours??!! Talk to ya later.

Well, folks, it looks like eleven people will be our little group this time out. Plus, I haven't heard anything from David Voss about about making this a sticky thread, so I guess we'll have to do a little searching for the thread in the future. Better yet, I'll create a new thread titled "USMC Group Build with Finish Date of 30 July 2004", and request to make it sticky. This should help everyone find it a little easier.
