1/48th Fujimi D3A Val
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Saturday, January 1, 2011 2:17 AM

Well, here's what I'm finishing up as my first completed build of 2011... A Fujimi Val...

I did the ol' tried & true rubber-cement masking for the paint-chipping, and also did a little "tape & pull" there as well..

Photos ain't the best though I'm trying still.. But I'm a modeler, not a photographer..

Added some sprue, strip and do-dads in the fuselage halves:

Scratch-built seats

Engine got a wiring harness from the ProModeler B-24D P/E fret

This one's a nice, easy build, nothing too complicated after the F-82...

Should get her finished before the weekend's out... Then she goes in the "hangar" (A cardboard box under a shelf in the War Room) until I can figure out a diorama for her...

I always wondered how this kit built up. I almost got one at the model show I went to, but then a guy was having 50% off Hasagawa kits, so I couldn't resist.

I've heard of the rubber method and think that might be easier then the hairspray method or salt. I've heard some bad things about the salt method.

Looks good Hans. I love the random look of the chipping, looks natural not purposeful.

Thanks, men..

I always wondered how this kit built up. I almost got one at the model show I went to, but then a guy was having 50% off Hasagawa kits, so I couldn't resist.

It builds up prety quick...  The cockpit was pretty basic and begs for more detail than I put in,although I put in more than what I took pictures of.. I added the gun-breeches to the panel, and re-worked the rear gun quite a bit. Out of the box, it's pretty clunky, looks like a bad Lewis gun... Overall fit is pretty tight, but I'm waiting on new plastic for my vacuform to re-do the canopy.  Closed, the kit one's fine (framing's a bit heavy though), but I want mine open... The crew figures are mummfied though.
Overall, it was definately worth the 12.00 I paid for it...

I've heard of the rubber method and think that might be easier then the hairspray method or salt. I've heard some bad things about the salt method.

The rubber cement method is  "Old School", been using it since Shep Paine wrote about it in the 70s and, at the time, called it "the old rubber cement masking trick", lol... It's probably another one that was brought over from the Model Railroader Community...
I think the salt method is just re-inventing the wheel, but haven't tried the hairspray method... From what I've read though about it, it's not much different, so I never bothered with trying it...

Heh.. I'm watching that build, Trouble... You're a better man than me, tackling THAT Mutha-Frank... Or a glutton for punishment, lol..

Wink

It's about done now, about to cut the exhaust stacks from some stretched-Q-tip handle tubing, and then I just gotta finish the weathering... And wait on the canopy material...

Looks great Hans.  I lov the cockpit detail painting.  I have an idea about the Diorama.  I had heard that some of these were captured intact by Allied Forces on several of the small Japanese island bases.  Why not do a scene with one of these being discovered by some Allied troops?  You could put some battle debris and maybe show a couple of POWs surrendering or something.  It would sure be pretty unique.

Whoops.. Sorry 'bout that...

Fixed my end of it...Toast

Not a bad idea... The problem would be the ground troops... Tamiya's 1/48 US Army Infantry scales out too small, all the figures are 5' tall...   I could probably modify some Monogram ground crew figures though...  Guess they would necessarily have to be infantry figures though... The figures could be some USAAF Intel-weenies from the FAEC (Foreign Aircraft Evaluation Center) poking around them after the island was secured...  Plenty of photos around of that kind of action...

Looking real good Hans! Do you have any more detail photos of the interior after painting?

As far as a dio idea... with a bird this war weary I have images of a Kamikaze type send off with the ground crew waving farewell. Tamiya makes some really good figures in those poses on their older Hamp and A6M5C kits. Also have a look at Eduard's series of ground crew figures in 1/48. They have some nice USN or Japanese ones for a reasonable price.

Hans-

If you decide to do the afore mentioned Kamikaze send-off, I have an extra set of Japanese well-wishers you`re welcome to have...just so happened to be in the Ki84 box as a bonus.

The most realistic would be to get a Plexiglas cube, fill it with ocean water, and put the Val on the bottom.  That's where they all ended up anyway.Smile  Or make a jungle and have vines and trees growing through it like it crashed on Bougainville.  You could use a 1/48 M4 also.

Sadly, I got ahead ahead of myself on the assembly and didn't take any more detail shots of the cockpit after I got the guns installed and 'pit painted,  Stik... I used the 20mm "Schlange Musik" gun-breeches from a Monogram Bf 110 nightfighter kit for the Val's nose-MGs... The openings for the guns-breeches were there in the panel, so I had to fill 'em, lol... I added stretched-sprue charging levers too...

Can't find the rear gun now though, but I think I can modify a Lewis gun to make a replacement...

As for the Kamikaze send-off, I like that idea!
