Of all the big sea birds, I would definitely have to say the PBY-5A. While the older variants were wonderful, the 5A was the first to have retractable landing gear ( a must for true amphibious operations).

...but for out-and-out fun and versatility, the Grumman Goose has got to be the Jeep of seaplanes! Small enough to set down and taxi into a small harbour, good range and classic good looks - hard to beat a Goose!

An obvious choice by far is the CAT but the Sunderland "flying porcupine", or even the seaplane variant of the B-24 ( PBY mariner) tie in at close second.

I'm sorry to say that the best seaplane by far is the JRM-1/2/3 (Martin Mars for those not informed) that was flown by VR-2 stationed at Alameda NAS, CA. This was the first airplane that I had ever flown in, I was only 6 months at the time. Now they are still being pressed into service by the Candian Forest Service as waterbombers.Big Smile [:D]

Boeing's 314 is my favorite. All of those Schneider trophy
racers made for a hard choice. Especially the Supermarine
S-6B.

Short S20, S21 Mayo composite - 2 for the price of 1!

Either that or the Supermarine Walrus - Saved a lot of downed aircrew during the Battle of Britain!

The Grumman Family , with the Widgeon and Goose would be the best, even
pilots of average means can still fly either of 'em!
Note to chumbley, Jimmy currently flys an Albatross, but then He,s a pilot
fo ABOVE average means(in no part thanks to me!!!!).
I want a GOOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Hunting,

My favorite seaplane is the Martin Seamaster. Close second is the Republic Seabee.

What about Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose? Just kidding. Wartime I like the Catalina PBY-5, peacetime, those Clippers were special.

A toss up between the PBY-5 and the Kawanishi H8K 'Emily'. The PBY is an emotional favorite for me but the 'Emily' was a best wartime flying boat.

My personal favorite is the PBY Catalina...especially when I first read about the Black Cats! I also like the Sunderland, Martin Mariner, Pan Am's Clippers, and Howard Hughes "Spruce Goose"...I know it didn't do much, but it was kinda pretty. I do agree with whoever else posted that they haven't looked at too many planes that they haven't liked. Big Smile [:D]

Bv 138 & Do 24 are my picks!

PBY Cat. It was so ugly it was beautiful. Or was that the other topic? I am getting so confused now.

That's a hard one. My love of experimental fighters makes it a toss up between the Sea Dart, Wildcatfish, or the SR A/1. I guess I'll go with the Saunder Roe SR A/1 as it was the first flying boat jet fighter. Best regards Woody

Nah, the Sunderland is the Biz! Up close the thing is enormous!

Anybody heard anything about the rumoured 1/48th Sunderland from Fonderie Miniature?

The Pan Am Clipper is probably the most stylish a/c to land on water. I like the PBY for Military a/c. Flew everywhere for everyone, and is still seen in modest numbers wherever you find water!!! :) -Ed

I like that German Arado 196. Of course the Japanese Rufe is kinda neat too.
