I made the most of my time at the Cameron airport yesterday. I had pulled a couple WWII aircraft from the display cabinet to pose with my Wildcat here at home. When I decided to photograph the Wildcat, I thought I'd get some pics of those as well. First up is a Monogram A6M5 Zero, built probably 20 years ago now. I did my first scratch-built cockpit on this plane, and then pretty much covered it up with the darn canopy. I remember planning to someday replace the kit canopy with a vac-formed lid and display it open to show off the 'pit. Oh well, maybe someday...anyway, this is the Zeke.

Working on that very kit m'self (AGAIN)... I scratched the 'pit, put new gun-butts in, detailed the flap & wheel-well interiors, and vac-formed a new canopy... Added brake line to the struts too...
I built the gun butts too. Might've built a new seat too. And added some side-wall consoles, levers, switches on the IP, built the bulkhead behind the seat, damn, it has been 20 years since I did all that and ya know, I'd love to see it again myself. Lessee, it would require re-doing the aerial but I might just try it. I'd love to have the canopy to "play" with Hans. Thanks a million. PM inbound.

I've been thinking a bit more about my plan to open the canopy on this 'bird Hans. Because of the way the center section overlaps the rear section, ya think I might need two vac-formed canopies to "play" with? Any ideas out there? This is becoming a bit more complicated than first thought...maybe that's why I didn't do it way back then. Thanks, Gary

Brings back fuzzy memories of building those kits in an afternoon, sans paint. For whatever reason, I didn't want to ruin the build with an ugly paintjob.

Hans, doncha think two canopies, plus the kit parts, should make it easier to get three separate pieces of the canopy? I'm just fishing for suggestions here.

When you remove the old A6M5 canopy, please take photos of the cockpit you scratch built and post them.
Thank you Sprue-ce Goose! I like natural light best for photographing models or guns as well (my other "hobby"), and I figure where else would aircraft look more at home. Well, in flight comes to mind, lol. But, it's easier for me to load up the ol' Trooper and drive to the airport. It's about 4 minutes away from my place.
I will definitely post pics of the Zero's cockpit when I get it "uncovered". I was rather proud of it way back then, and although I can use a bright light and see most of it through that thick kit canopy, I'm looking forward to displaying it again. I always did want to have the option of posing the canopy open, and now with Hans' help, that may be doable. If I can just conduct the surgery successfully!
