Good 1/48 HS 129 model?
Posted by EBergerud on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 1:11 AM

While looking for an early model B-17 I stumbled on a clearance of Italeri kit on LuckyModel in Japan and bought one. They were also selling 1/48 scale HS-129 with an Opel Blitz thrown in for good measure for $17. HS-169 is what I'd call a neat plane. There is a Hasegawa and a Revell/Hasegawa rendition on eBay. I think the Italeri was originally made by ESCI a firm I don't know. I've seen several mentions of the ESCI 1/48s and the opinions do vary, although an editor of a board claimed their HS-169 was a very good kit. On eBay the Italeri (also boxed by AMT) is widely available cheap. The Hasegawa is also available but at a very stiff price. I've learned a bad model is no bargain even if free. I've also learned that some of the 70's kits were very nice kits and worthy builds. Has anyone built either versions of the HS-129?

The Hasegawa (and Revell rebox) of the Hs-129 are the best on the market. The ecsi kit is about twenty years older and it shows.

Naturally: it's getting late. Odd that I ran into that kit last night. I was watching one of my German weapon series based on propaganda films just a couple of hours before (splendid things for modelers) and there were very dramatic films of the HS-129 in action, and I was thinking "wonder if there's a model?". There were about 900 built which wasn't a small run for a mid war German plane that wasn't a fighter. Regardless of how you spell it, it's a neat plane. (Although I guess General Richthoven inquired about getting the HS-123 back into production in late 1943 because it was so reliable: unfortunately for him the jigs etc were disposed of when production ceased in 1940. Oddly, the Stuka was on the "hit list" only be to be saved by an earlier war than planned by the LW.)

Here's a pretty poor pic of my ESCI Hs-129.   Borg is right, it's not nearly as nice as the Hasegawa kit:

The ESCI-Italeri kit is very buildable, can be done quickly oob or used as a starting point for a good scratchbuilding project. I had no issues with it that a little putty couldn't fix. You can be sure the Hase kit is better overall, but do you want to pay for it!?

I believe the current Revell boxing is the same mold as the older Hasegawa version which I have experience with...go with either of those...

I have an AMT/ERTL boxing of the ESCI kit that I am (sometimes) currently working on. it's not bad, but it could stand a little extra TLC to make it shine. Of course the Hasegawa release is a generation ahead in molding finesse and quality... So yes, there are not just one, but two kits out there of this unique bird in 1/48.

I snagged a Hasegawa 129 at a vendor table earlier this year for around $20...they can be found affordably, just takes patience...

When I built my Hs-129, I opted for that big 75(?)mm anti-tank cannon.  According to my research, those few models had the lower fuselage guns removed and faired over.  That was about the only major mod I did.  I believe I recall that these models only carried 12 rounds for the 75.

I would suspect if it took you more than 12 rounds to hit something with a 75mm you had bigger problems than running out of amo! Big Smile

I got the Hase in the stash also but she's a ways down the build list, looks fun though.
