Matt12

amazing work! dont glue the canopy so you can detach it every time you miss this view :D

do you just handpaint- postshade- glosscoat- wash the cockpit? no dry brushing?

please let me know what wash did you use and what kind of post shading did you do to the cockpit.

Thanks guys.  Matt, I'm sorry I missed your question.  The main color is airbrushed and the details are hand painted.  I tend to get alot of questions about my cockpits, so I did a step-bystep tutorial on how I do my cockpits.   Its easier to just give you the link.....

Hope this answers your question,

Thanks Allan.  Bench time has been sort of limited with a hectic work schedule and the flu working its way through my family.  I've had enough snow and cold in Northeast Ohio and I'm ready for spring.  Last night I did get some work in.  I glossed it with Alclad Gloss and decaled the airframe.  I had no issues other than Eagle Cal deciding to chop up the fin swastikas (probably for political reasons).  Rather than piece those together, I stole two from an He 111 sheet I had.  I think they may be a tad big, but oh well, its close enough.

I examined the slotted dive brakes and the "Balkenkreuz" cross decal (top part of it) that was suppose to be placed there at a goofy angle.  I was iffy about how the decal would look with the slots, so I figured it would be easier, and would probably look better if I painted this area on.  I painted the brake XF-1 flat black then taped it in place on the lower wing.  Using the Balkenkreuz that was already in place, I used Tamiya tape and carefuly taped off the area to remain black.  I removed the brake(s) sprayed the rest XF-1 flat white.  I then taped off the white and sprayed the rest RLM 65.  I was pleased on how it turned out, much better than a decal.  Perhaps I'll paint all of my crosses for now on.

Now glued in place....

All together now...

I painted the guns, drybrushed them, then use a wash.  I still need to dull coat them and provide a silver drybrushing to bring out some detail .  For the reat guns I'm either going to use brass tubing for the barrels or use some Quickboost barrels that I may have in the spare box.  I think I have...

Soon I will grunge this turkey up with a Flory Wash then start pieceing it together.

Well Joe youre kicking out another good one man. I'm with you on the swastika layout. That is a PIA. I keep a stray sheet of thost things laying around for just that reason. I also hear your pain on the limited bench time as I have two geriatric dachshunds who are 16 and 17 who need constant attention. I'll PM you with those details in a story that happened just recently. It's worth a laugh at the very least I'll tell ya!

Again good looking build here brother, Joe

Gorgeous work Joe.  I like how the cowlings are a different color from the camo leading up to it.

Totally with you on lack of bench time. I'm a mail carrier the snow and cold here in Connecticut is unbelievable and supposedly another 6+ coming Monday.  The 60+ hour weeks are starting to get to me

Thanks everyone for the compliments...way too kind.  Johnny, you noticed the cowls which certainly seems unusual for a splinter scheme.  Thats how Eagle Cal shows the upper profile so I assumed it was a characteristic of this particular subject.  On a sidenote, I got the Pro-Modeller Ju-88 C-6 Night Fighter cheap off E-bay recently and it arrived today.   Possibly back to back Ju-88 builds?

You are livin' the modeling dream here, Joe!  This 88 looks spectacular- the fading and streaking look fabulous- and good call on the dive dives, too.  I am a fan.

Cheers!

Gonna stick a fork in this turkey and call it done.  To recap, Its the 1/48 Promodeler (DML/Dragon re-box) Ju-88 A-4 in the Battle of Britain veteran bomber group III KG 51 "Edelweis" markings around the spring of 1942.  It depicts a plane on the Russian front.  There's nothing particularly special about the plane other than I liked the markings.

Reference the kit, truth be told, I'm glad its off my bench.   I wouldn't say it was a pig, but it was definitely challenging.  The fiddly bits towards the end really tried my patience and I kept knocking stuff off, likely because its such a large plane.  My biggest gripe was the canopies (as Nathan correctly pointed out....Wink) I could not for the life of me get the greenhouse canopies to fit right.  I fussed with it for at least an hour and I finally shaved a bit off the rear of the front portion and I got it to look halfway decent.  I came to the conclusion that the starboard rear canopy was slightly warped whch then misaligned everything.  Interestingly, these seemed to fit when I test fitted them.  If I build this one again, these will masked then added before paint, like I did with my HE 111.  I did glue the bombadier glazing and gondola assembly on ahead of time before paint.  I used Tenax for strength.  I then taped of the front to prevent overspray and then later discovered some of the Tenax had seeped onto a small part of the glass Angry.  I decided to cut out some small styrene stock and paint it RLM 65 to hide it (look at the nose, you can see it).  I'll pretend the bombadier was scared and needed some armor plating added as a  field modificationConfused.  At least I wont see my mess up glaring at me.

Anyways, I added, Albion Alloy brass tubing for the MG's (rear and bottom) and some PE gun sights.  I did not have German sights so I just went with what I had.  I'm pleased with how it looks, much better than the kit "broom sticks".   I added an antenna wire and breathed a sigh of relief...done....Ha!.

I have the C-6 version in the stash which I intend to build in Helmut Lent's markings.  Its gonna be after I build a few easy ones to help me decompress Wink.  Thanks for following my thread and comments are always welcome.

Joe, nice job on this biggin.  I don't blame you for being happy to be done with it.  I've got a B-17 I put aside so I can become a smarter modeler and do it better...and I don't see myself getting to it until maybe the end of the year... =]

This is a pretty sweet build.  You're certainly consistent with everything you do.  I feel like I'm still making adjustments to improve, but here you show a nice, clean build again and again.

I guess you don't have anything stopping you from catching up with all of us in that P-40 GB now huh?! =P

Thanks Bvallot.  I'm still undecided on how to deal with that P-40 cockpit.  I'm hoping something will become available for that kit and I can jump on it.  I'm still in Luftwaffe mode so I'm gonna do a nice easy Hasegawa FW 190 A-5 for that group build first.

First off I have to congratulate you on a super build Joe! I know what you mean about being really close to the end of a build like this and things not going smoothly. I dunno why that is but I can always count on a major obstacle in the final building stages of my kits and I try to think ahead constantly.

Secondly, come on with yo bad self on that 190 brother!! Looking forward to seeing that one!!

Another beautiful build Joe, the painted Balkenkruez, greenhouse canopy work and added MGs really make a difference. Your attention to detail is as good as it gets.  I love the Ju 88 and your work has to be consistently some of the finest on here.Toast

"Hey Joe, where ya goin' with that awesome model in your hand?"

It looks like it all came together in the end for you Joe. The canopies look real nice, and I can't see any fit issues on the finished product. The painting and masking are very well done. If you are venturing into night fighter versions, check out AIMS decals. They have some very attractive schemes, and they are cheap and he ships very quickly!

Thanks for looking everyone, and thanks for all the kind words.  Hey Wingnut, I'm left handed just like Jimmy so for the right price, it could end up at your house....Wink
