"Century series jets" GB feeler

WOW Theuns, I am actually on track for this. I have already the F-100, F-101, 3 x F-104s and DO plan on doing the rest. I 've been looking at Trumpeter's F-105 and Meng's F-102. I've seen a few companies that make the F-106 but have not seen any examples. So, in short, I'd be in for sure with prob both the Trumpy and Meng. Great minds think alike!!

What about the missing century series fighters?  The F-103 Thunderwarrior only reached the mock up stage.  The F-107 Ultra Sabre flew, the F-108 Rapier reached mock up,  The F-109 was mocked up, and, we all know the F-110 as the F-4 Phantom...There were kits made of most of these, too!

I did not even know of the non "main stream" century jets   (oops!)

Heck yeah, anything fitting the period with a "100" in the designator number would certainly fit, although, not, in the 'actual' historic operational series. I have a badge idea that will only capture the 'true' Century Series classics to encourage these 6 classic airframes:

I would love to do a 1:48 Voodoo and Delta Dart.  Does anyone make a new tool F-106 in 1:48? I've build the Monogram/Revell one.

And the F-117 is technically a Century series aircraft.

I tried to pick up a 1:72 106 today in Montreal..no joy. Will try Toronto in 2 weeks.

There is a 1/72nd F107 made by Trumpeter and an after market cockpit for it made by Cobra (IIRC). There were three F107s produced and two still exist. One is in the USAF Museum in Dayton Ohio (see their web site for pictures), and one is in the Pima air museum (IIRC) in Arizona. The third aircraft was damaged in a landing accident and was used for firefighting practice and burned and scrapped. Bob Hoover, the famous test pilot, said that the F107 was the best jet fighter he ever flew. The only 1/72 F106 I know of is the Hasegawa kit from the 70s. Revell did a box scale kit of the F106. The Trumpeter F100 C and D and F in 1/48th scale are excellent, as are Hasegawa's F104s (C, CF, S and G). Monogram did the F101B in 1/48th scale and there is an out of production kit of the RF 101B in 1/48th scale by Monogram if you can find it. Monogram also did the F106 and the F102 in 1/48th. I have not seen the Meng F102 in 1/48th scale (YET). Monogram AND Revel also did 1/48th scale F104s that are nice and less expensive than the Hasegawa kits. Hasegawa did a RF101 in 1/72nd scale and there is an old conversion kit to convert it into a C model. Hasegawa also did an F100 as did Italarie. I think Italarie did a F100F in 1/72nd scale as well (IIRC it may have been someone else like ESCI). I look forward to this build as I love the supersonic jets and that glorious age of record braking and sound barrier sonic "booms". There are some resin kits of some of these aircraft that are super expensive and there are a few vacuumed formed models of some of these as well that are no longer available (OOP). As mentioned above the F105 D and G/F was done by /Trumpeter in 1/48th scale. Monogram did a 1/48th D and D thunderstick (just recently re-released) as well as a F105 F/G. Lindberg did a YF100 prototype but it is a very old and crude by todays standards. Both Revell and Monogram did a 1/72nd scale F104 that are nice little kits, and Revell did a 1/72nd scale F101B that is excellent and still available. Hasegawa also did a 1/72nd scale F105 D (IIR).  Hasegawa also did a 1/32 scale F104 G and Italerie just released a 1/32nd scale F104 G.  Revell did a 1/32nd scale G and C F104 (IIRC).  Most of these kits are readily available, other than the few that are OOP and have not been re-released lately. This should be a good GB. I have been wanting to finish my F-107 and this could be the kick in the but I need to go to the bench.

I'm down, I got a 102 and 104 in the stash. Both of them 1/48 scale.

OK, so it seems that there is some interest in this potential GB.

Now please advise me how we will classify a "century series" jet?

If they started with the F-100, where did they end? Was the F-117 the last of the "100's" ?

If so, will we then say anything from the 100 to the 117?

What do you guys recon, 3 1/2 months long enough? Otherwise it might become to drawn out. (mid June till end September 2014)

3.5 months? I may be painting myself in a corner, lol. I have the Sci-fi, Braille and upcoming WWI GBs ongoing. How about till 1 Jan? I would suggest anything with a "100" in the designation.

I would love to jump in since I have most of them in my stash. I'm kind of committed with a couple of commissions so a longer time, say from July to  January or past that would be most beneficial IMO.

OK then how about start tomorrow till end Dec. '14 for those who would like a later date?

I need the insperation to do the 104 for the Nationals in mid July! LOL

I'd like to be in this Group build, but I'm not sure about the dates. I wouldn't be too hasty in starting. Let this go awhile and give folks a chance to gather kits and accessories, and time to clear their bench. I'd suggest an August/Sept. start and go til Jan. 2015??

I'd like to joind the GB.  Not sure if I can finish by 12/31 but will do my best!  I have the 1/48 Encore Models F-102A.  The kit comes with resin and PE included.  Looks like a sweet kit!

For other 1/72 scale Century Series recommendations:

F-100 Esci kit is not as detailed as the Trumpeter kit, but more accurate in some shapes and easier to build. Italeri's kit is based on the Esci, and Revell Germany reboxed the Italeri version.

F-101B Revell's kit is very good but has a few assembly oddities. Hasegawa's RF-101C is the only game in town for the single-seaters in this scale so far.

The Meng F-102 kit(s) is 1/72 scale, and the go-to kit for the Deuce in this scale.

F-104 by Revell (also boxed by Monogram) is as good as the Hasegawa kit, and less expensive. The old Esci kit isn't bad, and Italeri reboxed it. The tip tanks are too skinny, though.

If you can find it, look for the Revell 1/72 F-105D kit that was issued in the '80s. It's not the old box-scale '50s kit, but a scale down of the Monogram 1/48 D. Although it has raised panel lines, I think it is superior to the Trumpeter in accuracy. Monogram makes the two-seaters in 1/72 as well.

F-106 from Hasegawa is the only choice. Hoping that Meng follows the Deuce with the Six soon.

Anigrand has made resin kits of the missing members of the family. They are expensive and not terribly accurate in shape.

With a longer time period for the build and if crossovers are allowed, I will be in. I have many in the stash, and have a few new GBs about to kick off for me.

OK, Rob has made the sugestion of a completion date of Spring 2015 ( I assume that would be round March/April??)

Lets keep the start date though, no need to rush in untill you are ready to do so :-)

I am happy with that if it helps to get more folks involved :-)

BTW, I can see no reason why cross overs should not work, makes it more fun

There are gobs of 1/72 Hasegawa and 1/48 Monogram Sixes on eBay every day, so you should be able to get a good price!

Don't know where you live but if you happen to have a Hobby Lobby nearby, they just may have the 101 re release. I bought mine about a year or so back from HL.

Tks plastic...I'm in Canada near montreal, so, no. I did, however, just looked at evilBay and there are, like PaulBoyer juset mentioned, tons of options there...and a bunch with free shipping so I may bite on a F-106 from there.

Yes Ebay is another option. A while back I picked up the F-100, 102 and 106 as a package lot for $18 each including shipping so there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Im in...I have an 1/48 F-106 that I've wanted to accompany my other one, love the lines of that bird and It'll be the third I've built and hopefully I'll do it justice this time.

Be aware that in the first boxing (or two?), Hasegawa's F-106 had the early prototype wing with the fences. So a few kits out there may have them. Just shave them off then use a razor saw to cut in a slot in the leading edge of the wing. Later editions of the kit have the slot.

The usual definition for the Century Series is F-100 to XF-109.
