Wow-Toshi! Your build of this B-17 is awesome! Such fine detail work with those PE parts. I used them on my 1:350 Trumpeter Liberty ship and completely destroyed some of the pieces when trying to bend them, although I did not have a decent bender - strictly used a single-edged blade. Tosh, very nice build. I'm just now starting an enhanced B-17G that I'm building for a protege using Verlinden and Eduard upgrades. The Verlinden parts cover a lot of goodies such as 5-part turbo chargers, new tailwheel and main struts, added gribblies for interior and bombardier's position, new 50 cal Brownings, etc. Eduard is just a new set of engines and cowls. I'm going to do a build thread of this model since it's a bit different from your's having an engine build that is quite challenging.

 

I'm so excitedly looking forward to your build thread!  There is another forum member, BrandonK, he is building something very similar to what you are doing and what I've done.  He has a huge project in front of him, as he so described earlier on this thread.  Now I want to build another B-17G too!  LOL!  Builder 2010, thank you for the read and reply, I'm honored.

That's just fine, you're not late at all and you caught this build just in time as I have only just started another kit.  This is the first B-17 for me.  I've made the 1:48 scale Monogram B-24 Liberator twice as a ten year old, and once most recently which makes it three times thus far.  I really enjoyed the "Flying Fortress" build very much.

I'm thinking of building the B-29 and the B-52 next.  I'll have wait and see what Mrs. Toshi says.  I remember not being able to afford the "Visible B-17G" as a kid.  I'm glad I could finally fulfill this dream.  As for my next build, it will be a Trumpeter 1:32 TBF-Avenger, yes, it's incredibly huge.

I can't really add anything to what everyone else has said, except to second their comments.  You have really done a great job, especially with the PE for this kit, and with your finish.  The old Monogram B-17 kit is one of my favorites, ever since I built them as a kid in the 70s, and you have done an excellent job on this one.

The visible kit is a bonus, too, with those extra crew figures in their flight suits.

At first, I shot the B-17 with Testors metallic silver #1146.  I wanted a museum type finish so I reshot the Fortress with MM silver chrome trim.  The clear was shot with MM clear coat #4638.

I've finally placed the last piece, painted the final item, and made any adjustments in regards to closing this kit out.  At first, I had my reservations in building this kit with PE, I'm just very pleased that it turned out this way that I had somewhat envisioned.

Now that I have a bit more experience with PE, I not only feel confident but I also had an extremely fun time putting all those little pieces together no matter the size of it.  

To assist in being able to view the assembly of PE, I'm just extremely grateful Mrs. Toshi purchased the Magna-Visor with LED lights from Harbor Frieght Tools for me.  It payed itself in dividends!  

The kit went together very smoothly and had no gap nor seam issues to deal with.  Due to the nature of PE some items had to be improvised yet it all came together very well.  Please see below for the completed B-17.

Yes, it had to be the LED that caused all that mirrored images.  I'm glad that was the issue as its a simple fix.  Thanks for the heads up, and the read and reply!

Yeah, Toshi -- it must be the LED lightining.  The clear fus half is a lot less reflecive outsdie!  Looks good!

To my fellow forum members,

I have just assembled the joining of the two halves of the "Flying Fortress", to complete the model, I still have much to do.  The rest of the canopies, machine guns, turrets, and engines will be added on tomorrow.  

Once this has been accomplished, I can then add the decals and seal the entire aircraft.  Please see below for progress.

The B-17 is coming along nicely Toshi, I love how the NM on the opaque side came out.

You are doing a real bang up job on this bird Toshi!!! Wow! All that detail is really shining right now. I was thinking about the clear half as well as showing off all the detail, it will also show the unwanted areas of that it like the undersides of the flooring and all that. As a thought, the bottom sides of the L/H half of the fuselage could be masked off and painted the silver finish to cover the lower areas that you wouldn't want to show. Again, just a thought.

Toshi, I have a Visible B-17 that is a future project, but I have looked it over. It seems that a light dull coat might knock down some glare. I would want to try it on an inconspicuous area like the tail wing before committing to the whole fuselage. Then, you still have the opaque fuselage half that you could cut out sections and see how it goes.

Of the many glues that I use are Faller's EXPERT and SUPER-EXPERT. They are in standard and extra strength; both with a metal tube. They are my serious glues!

Thanks, it's getting there.  I just hand painted the canopies last night and am installing them today.  Once these are installed, I'll assemble the interior and move onto the superstructure.  Thank you BrandonD for visiting and repllying on this thread and many others that I've wrote.

Ah, I purchased the wrong glue.  My triangular Testors glue is the red labeled plastic spout #3507.  My next purchase will be the one you recommend.  I also use the Testors liquid glue and the Testors clear parts cement.  Like anything else, it's all up to the builder and what works for him/her.  

You are correct that the old school tube can get messy.  LOL!  Thank you for the heads up on the cements, now I know.  Also thank you for your support in all my threads, I really appreciate your visits and knowledge, I look forward to it.

I also love the Phantom Mustang, they will never beat that kit!  The reflective issue could be due to the type of lighting I use.  I have nothing but LED lights when I work on models.  I have really bad eye sight in one eye and I can't see in the other due to my work related accident.

There is another forum member that has made a amazing scratch built B-17 that is a cutaway.  When comparing my visible to the cutaway, the cutaway is definitely superior to what I'm building.  Thank you SubarooMike for supporting my build, I really appreciate it.

Toshi - About cements, I don't use the old tube types, too messy and hard to control. I use a combination of supplies, Tamiya Extra Thin, Testors thin liquid and Testors cement in the triangular black plastic container. It seems close to the thickness of the old squeeze tube cement.

Caution ! There are two of the triangular black plastic versions, the one I use has a very small metal tube, (syringe needle size,) the other looks the same but has a much larger plastic applicator, useful sometimes, but way too much at each squeeze for almost all jobs. The one I use is labeled #8872, it works VERY well for the larger jobs like cementing upper and lower wing sections together, where there is a rather wide mating surface.

The one I rarely use is labeled 3507, it' behaves like 8872, but the applicator tube is too large, for precise applications.

Remember to look for #8872, triangular container with black label, the other one has the same container, but with a red label. Hope you find it useful. Your -17 looks just super.

The clear half is very reflective.  I feel like a cut-a-way could have worked much better.  The  Phantom Mustang still will always have a place in my heart though!

Yesterday afternoon I set the wings up with old school Testors glue in the toothpaste style tube.  Does anybody on the forum use this anymore?  The small joints and cracks and crevices were sealed with Tamiya Extra Thin Cement.  

As you can see, there's lots of clips and clothes pins holding the wings together as these wings are extremely thick and heavy.  The landing gear is enormous and is designed to hold up the B-17.  The set are some of the most heavy duty landing gears I've ever assembled.  

Almost next to none sanding was done as everything sealed accordingly.  All I had to do was lightly sand the edges of the wings and buff it out.  Later this evening, as it's too hot, I'll spray the wings and tail section.  I'll also spray everything down with clear coat as well. 

While the paint cures, I'll mask all windows and canopies and then spray silver then shoot a clear coat. I plan to have everything nice and shiny from the clear coat to stage the "Flying Fortress" as a showpiece.

Well, today was a fun and exciting day!  I either was glueing PE or trying to figure out what PE goes to where.  I think I figured some of this out as it looks like certain PE parts belong there.  After scratching my head, I decided to do a dry test run, just to see what and where everything goes together.  I still have the tail gunner and portions of some panels that need to be installed, that can wait till tomorrow.  Please see below.

Visible Polaris? Oh yeah! I built that back around 1970 I think. I remember being proud of my paint work. And also being surprised how much room the missiles and launch tubes occupied in the sub.

Greg, I found my "Visible" B-17G on eBay for approximately $35.00, give or take a few dollars here and there!  I've seen a few "Visible" B-17G Flying Fortress on eBay just the other day.  Check it out before it gets purchased.

Prior to the Revell 1:48 B-17G Flying Fortress build, I was working on my Tamiya 1:32 Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero Fighter Model 21 "Zeke".  It could be that it was just overlooked at some point.  All is good now that you've been able to see the fruition of the "Visible" B-17G.  

As for the question regarding the visible Revell/Monogram kits, I was aware of the V8, Human Body, Phantom Mustang, and finally this project here that I'm working on now.

I could never afford the "Visible" B-17G kit as it was way to expensive for me at that point in my life.  Being a newspaper delivery boy, my income was limited at best.  This kit was an astronomical $25.00!  Anyway, once this project is complete, I have a Trumpeter 1:32 TBF-1C Avenger to be built.  Thank you Greg for always touching base with me, I'm always most honored sir.

BTW, about your PE bending jig (the "Bug"), I finally saw one in person at the show last week. Was very impressed with the quality. Though the design of mine is the same, it is all molded plastic of some sort and you made a good choice going with the small shop.

At 11:10pm, I'm on a roll.  This day was spent with Mrs. Toshi while we both enjoyed our breakfast together.  After breakfast, Mrs. Toshi goes to her iPad to do a digital puzzle while I work on my current project building the B-17G.  For a change, we went out for dinner had a great time and returned home to close out the rest of the evening.  Well, maybe for Mrs. Toshi but not for me!  LOL!

I finally completed the bombardier section as well as the cockpit, the mid-section was tended to as well.  I did a few dry test fits and at this time, I see no issues.  I still have the bombay and the tail section to complete.  Once that's done I'll methodically spray the B-17G in sections and put it together.  Thank you forum members for visiting my thread, it is greatly appreciated.

What's interesting with this kit is that you can build it with the clear fuselage or a solid one that's included.  I plan on using the Testors clear cement glue to ensure that there will be no mess or issues occurring during this assembly stage with the clear half.  Thank you for the heads up.

Why thank you patrick206, thats very kind of you.  I want to personally thank you from the bottom of my heart for just being there for me as I learned so much from you and forum members.  Besides building a model kit for myself for fun, excitement and sheer enjoyment, I always do my best to give the best possible presentation to all my brothers and sisters of FSM Forum, if not, that would be sacrilegious to the model kit Gods!  LOL!

I'll take Tamiya tape and go over the glueing joints to ensure a clean glueing surface.  If you start scraping things up, bad things can happen.  LOL!  I've learned this by experience.  I think the tape I use is the really thin one, if my memory serves me right, it's the Tamiya 6mm size tape.  

In this case of the "Visible" B-17G, I need to have the joint painted as it needs to show through the clear half of the fuselage.  If not, it'll look really sloppy.  Due to the unique nature of this kit that's visible, mistakes cannot happen.  There's just too much at stake so variances must be minimal or non-existent at best.  Thank you patrick206 for your support in my projects.  It is extremely important to me.

2 or 3 months ago, I could not have imagined we would see such amazing build quality this quickly. Not for me to judge any ones work, but I must tell you I believe your abilities have increased by a factor of several times. The parts fitting and alignments are spot on, your finish work is fine, the finished models are now first rate. From me to you, excellent work Sir.

I always look forward to seeing your excellent in progress posts and photos, soon others will be asking you for advice on how to do modeling tasks.

Let me be the first. When you airbrush the interior bits and paint gets on the mating surfaces, how do you glue those surfaces together? Do you scrape the paint away and use liquid cement, or do you use instant glue,(cyano?)  

The -17 looks mighty fine my friend, I look forward to seeing it finished.

This is looking AWESOME Toshi! I have a love/ hate relationship with PE. First off I use it all the time so I like the results and don't see myself discontinuing its use in my modeling.  Secondly, while I like the results I do dislike working with it at times. In the end I have to ask myself if all the effort/ torture was worth it and the answer is always a strong "YES".

I just received my order of paints of which is two bottles of MM zinc chromate yellow, and two bottles of MM gloss clear coat.  Once in my hand, I immediately went to work on the B-17.  This section is the radio manned compartment.  Below you will find the progress made.

Only now, I realize that PE in a way, is a whole different way of building model kits.  It's very tedious for me, let's see how long I can endure this torture.  LOL!

True, the PE is rather intense.  

I for one develop intense back pain having to bend over the bench when lookin through the mag glass to see the stuff.  I can only do the PE for a short time then hafta take a break.

Lookin' good Toshi! You're doing better by the PE than I ever have. I've used the stuff on and off for years now and still hate and avoid it whenever possible.

Be careful with the Squadron Walkaround book. That's a restored aircraft. For example, the fuselage aft of the cockpit should be natural metal. Not being a butt, but pointing it out if accuracy is important. I'll be following this one.

I hope you have as much enjoyment from working with the PE as I do.  The B-26 was/is my first attempt at building a mess of PE  ( I've done a liitle before this ) and I was surprised at how much I enjoy working with the stuff.  I just bend it with  few wood chisels I had on hand ,on a piece of glass. This works well for me so I will forgo the purchase of a neat bender like yours, but I must admit I'd like to have one.

You're doing a bang-up job on the B-17 and I'm following your WIP with keen and vicarious interest.

  True Details makes a bunch of stuff for that kit. My grandfather bought all the sets by True Details that Squadron had at that time. The walk-around is a very valuable source.

Here's the first PE that's done.  The last time I touched PE was my P-61 Black Widow build.

When I first started, I chose to by a PE bending tool called photoflex.  It fell apart in seconds, this PE bending tool looks like it will last a long time.  It's called the "Bug".  I purchased it from (The Small Shop).

My intuition tells me that the Zinc Chromate Green is too dark for it to be visible.  I'm thinking that I'll change up here and go with Zinc Chromate Yellow.  I need the interior a little on the bright side as oppose to the dark side.  (Luke, I am your father.)

I even had Mrs. Toshi take a look at it and she said "If I paint things black like the PE, you'll never see it unless you get up really close".  I want the interior and everything else to stand out and hold it's own.  I know that the color is incorrect, but I'm not going with replicating the original B-17G like I did with my Zero, I'm going for the show value.  

Coming up next will be the re-painted interior in Zinc Chromate Yellow.

Ok, my fellow forum members,

Here we go for another ride.  This time it's a B-17G.  I'm still waiting for my photo etch for the "Bombardier" I do have the rest with me now.  Everything has been primed and is awaiting assembly.  What feels really weird is the fact that I'm only going to be working on one side.  This clear "Visible" feels really weird.

As for the right side body of the Fortress, it's been primed and as you can see below it has also been sprayed with the interior "Zinc Chromate Green".

I'm so used to assembling both sides, oh well, as I mentioned above, here we go!

Yes sir Mr. M. Brindos, something is definately going to start to brew with this build.  I actually joined my very first GB, it's the Boeing GB hosted by modelcrazy.  I find this fascinating at best as I've never done anything like this before.

Although I have the majority of my PE delivered, I'm still waiting on my final piece, the front end (Bombadier) PE.  Once this arrives, I should have my Tamiya 1:32 Mitsubishi Zero A6M2b Model 21 "Zeke" completed.  Then it's off to the B-17G build.  

My brother, thank you for all you have done for me since the very beginning, it has been instrumental in my modeling growth as well as personal growth as well.

Heh, I, too, have the visible B-17 in my stash, and have acquired some AM parts, but still collecting as things go on sale.  Seems to be my habit, as my last 'kit' order was over $100, but included exactly one 1/72 scale kit that was on sale.  Everything else was aftermarket parts (mostly PE for my 1/48th PBY).  Still, it's almost as much fun as purchasing a kit!

You must consider the size of this kit is two times the size and five times the compartments interior not to exclude exterior of the B-17G, of a single seat 1:48 aircraft.  This is a massive undertaking.  Yes, it can get expensive.  When I built my Monogram 1:48 P-61 Black Widow, I spent $125.00 in PE and resin kits.  Exterior and interior.  I still have the receipts for it.  LOL!

OMG!  OMG!  WOW!  Amazing stuff, I wish I could do something to that nature of your build with all those aftermarket products.  If I'm a really good boy, maybe, maybe Mrs. Toshi might allow me to purchase these items to your extent.  But in all seriousness, thank you for the insight, now I know what my next purchasing step will be.  Thank you once again sir.

I'm not planning on starting this for awhile. Too many others in line first. I have two B-17's, a visable and a regular. The regular will be set in flight and hanging with prop blur and all. The other will be a dio with maintanence crew, open engines, the works. All the PE is Eduard (10 Kits in all) and I have ALL the PE you can buy for the B-17, it's a lot of stuff, front to back and outside. I have the Verlindin Update set, all Squadron glass, Brassin wheel and tire set, 4 Vector R-1820-G engines, White Metal Landing Gear set, and an Eduard Mask set. Honestly I have several hundred dollars invested in these two birds and the upgrades. I still need the updates props and a set of decals I like.

I also have the Squadron Walk Around for the build. There isn't much made for these that I don't have. Unfortunately I don't have any experience building one. I have tons of reference material and that is the plan for now, take my time and do my best.

Will you be starting your kit anytime soon?  Can I ask you, if you don't mind, I would like to find out as I build my Fortress any tips in this upcoming build?  This would make a great reference for me.  Actually, I have a question now regarding the PE and resin kit.  What brand did you buy of both aftermarket kits and from whom did you buy it from?  Thanks Brandon, your always there for me, it's extremely appreciated!

Well sir, a bit pre-mature but, "Happy Birthday"!  

I've never built a B-17G before or any other variation for that matter.  The only big heavy bomber I've ever assembled is the B-24 Liberator.  As a youth, I built two, so if you count the current B-24 build that's three that I built.

I just sprayed the OD onto the interior of the Fortress and I'll place them for storage and safe keeping.  I especially do not want the clear half of my B-17G to get scratched.

Next up, I'm spraying the interior Testors Olive Drab 1165 1/4 fl. oz.

I just needed to dry fit and see if there are any surprises that I need to be aware of.  Apparently, so far at this time, the answer is no.

This looks awesome.  I will be adding PE to the front, cockpit, communications, bomb part of the fuselage, side gunner, and finally the rear gunner!

How do you like my very first AB!  It's still doing its job perfectly.
