WIP Monogram 1:48 P-47D Thunderbolt Razorback
Posted by Toshi on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 9:43 PM

To my fellow forum members,

As you all know, my project build is a Tamiya 1:32 Mitsubishi A6M2b Model 21 "Zeke".  For this particular build under direct orders from Mrs. Toshi, I ordered Tamiya specific paints.  This is not a joke, Mrs. Toshi was very serious.

One night, I was trying to mix specific color paints to get to what visual senses I viewed of the "Zeke" until 1:00am.  The very next day, Mrs. Toshi said; "You're wasting paint, just go ahead and buy exactly what you need".  Until my paints arrive via eBay I must be patient and wait for the delivery of the special Tamiya paint colors.  Ya Right!

I went to Hobby Lobby, purchased a back up 0.35 needle for my NEO Gravity Feed Iwata Air Brush.  I also purchased a few Master Modeler paints and a P-47D.  I figured since I have built the A-10 Thunderbolt II, I might as well build the original Thunderbolt and this should maybe, will see, I think hold me, and keep me occupied until Friday July 10, 2015.

I have a feeling the Tamiya paints is suppose to show up tomorrow.  until then, please review my P-47D Thunderbolt "Razorback".

I told my "Pain medication and rehabilitation" (PM&R) doctor that I'm having trouble sleeping.  He prescribed some type of sleeping medicine.  I just forgot to take it that night LOL!  I told him that I'll just drink Tequila straight with lemon and salt.  We both had a good laugh!  I'm forbidden to drink alcohol as it can have bad effects on people with brain injuries.  I told him; "How much more messed up can I get"?  LOL!

Now seriously, I'd like to see your P-47.  Is it possible?  If not, no big deal.  I AB mine silver.  That's the color the original Monogram P-47 was presented in.  It's just out of nostalgia.  Take care BrandonK, have a nice enjoyable day.

Nice choice, Toshi!  This is one of my favorite kits, and I think it's as old as I am, or maybe just a couple of years younger (I'm vintage 1964).  It still builds into a nice representation of a razorback Thunderbolt, despite its age.  I look forward to seeing your progress!

Here's some pics, the first ones are primer.  As a reminder to forum members, I did the primer with Krylon Gray Primer MAXX.  After the primer pics, I have the P-47 in its final stage of painting.  The equipment is a NEO Iwata with a 0.35 needle and nozzle.  The paint I used is Testors Metallic Silver #1146.  Thank you so much forum members for your support and the read and reply!

Toshi,

My P47-D is mostly OOB. I used brass tube for new wing canons and I did my Nav light trick to the wings. It also has aftermarket decals. I am looking forward to seeing yours.

This kit is one of the better, if not the best older Monogram kits. It really build well and there are tons of decals out there for it. It is certainly worth picking up, especially since it's cheap.

One of the first kits I tackled when I returned to the hobby.  That NMF looks fantastic.

The thing about the Revellogram Thunderbolts is once you realize its no a Tamiya kit and just have fun with it, it actually can turn out really really nice. The bubble-top is nice too, but I prefer the razorback. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.

To ajd3530,

Your P-47 is perfect!  I know I'm not going to get close to yours, no way.  I want to thank you for sharing your P-47 with myself as well as forum members!  The P-47 in the snow looks so realistic.

You see, I'm actually waiting on some Tamiya paints, I'm to build or as you pro modelers say; "On the bench" I have a Tamiya 1:32 Zero waiting for it's colorization.

I was in withdrawals for two days, I finally went to Hobby Lobby to purchase a model kit, which one, I knew not.  I saw the Thunderbolt kit and I recall many forum members insists this would be a potential great build for me.  So I purchased it and here I am.

Thank you ajd3530 for reading and replying to my thread.

Geez Toshi,

I am amazed at the look you achieved on your P-47 simply with silver paint. Your painting/AB skills have increased exponentially.  looking forward to your next post on this beautiful bird.

Very nice work again Toshi! I've never gotten results that good from simple silver paint.

I don't think I've gotten that good a result off of regular paint...Indifferent

I'm with the others, Toshi, your silver has come out very nicely!

I've been using a gloss aluminium in a rattle can, I can't remember if it's Tamiya (which I think it is) or Model Master.  Though it's labelled a gloss, it dries/cures to a semi-gloss.

I look forward to seeing your next progress.  You've probably got it finished by now!

To Jay Jay,

I'm finally using an Iwata specific air regulator that's in line.  It's called a MAC, I hooked it up with a quick disconnect.  It works great now.  That helps me greatly when I AB.  In the past, I did not have any air regulator, I was airbrushing at 58psi.  Isn't that crazy?  Of course I had no idea, I was just enjoying myself with my very first ever, AB, an Iwata.  I was like Ooooo Aaaaa cool.  I've always loved the color silver, I don't know why.  Matter of fact, the Visible Monogram B-17G "Flying Fortress" will be silver as well.

On the box rendition the "Fortress" is OD, the interior is green zinc chromate.  There's no separation artistically between the interior and exterior.  Hence, I'm going with the silver to create a separation in color form.  In actuality, I'm possibly using Master Model Enamel Silver Chrome Trim.  I'll see how I feel about that.  Thank you for everything!
