Not sure how i misse this thread, so many 109#s at the minute. Lovely work there, i know know what it is, but you seem to get a really nice look with your paint, i can't describe it.

I have been trying to find a good RLM 81 for ages. Xtracolor's used to be a purpelish colour, i still have an old tin, but they also seem to have gone to an oilve green look.

Great work dog and what a wicked paint job! I emailed Sprue Bros about the Flory Washes and was told that they are only available from the UK from now on. No more US dealers.

Thanks guys. PJ, SBros. told me the same thing about Flory. Absolute shame. I hope we can still get it sent here from the UK

Joe you will have no problem getting it sent from the UK as its water based. The issues for posting paints from here are around enamels and lacquers. Does seem odd that they have stopped useing distributors, but the postage is pretty god, £3.50 flat rate anywhere in the world.

They seem to have stopped selling on E-Bay as well so the only option is from the site.

I'm going with done here.  To recap, its the 1/48 Hasegawa K-4 in 9/JG 77 markings, namely Werk number 330204 "White 1", which participated in Operation Bodenplatte on New Years Day 1945.  On the mission it was piloted by Lt. Herbert Abemdroth where he was downed by flak and POW'ed. My research revealed that White 1 was actually White 13, but the "3" was painted over in the RLM 82.  Apparently the Luftwaffe were superstitious as well.

What can be said about the kit.  I've built many.  In my opinion, its still the best F thru K 109 in this scale, or perhaps I'm just used to it.  It could use a cockpit upgrade, or at least some PE in there.  This one got a CMK cockpit (which was provided along with the kit) and it was a challenge to fit.  In future I'll stick with True Detailsor PE here. I added Ultracast wheels and Quickboost exhausts.  The markings were a mixture of Superscale and the kit.  For added realism I drilled out the motorkannon and MG barrels, added wire to gear legs, and made a new DF loop from fine wire.  The kits's instructions have the drop tanks deleted, so apparently the K was void them.  My research said Bodenplatte JG 77 planes had them, so I added one.

The paint was RLM 81/82 over 76 in Gunze Aqueous.  This was unusual for me as I'm used to the 74/75 over 76. It's weird seeing a green 109.  I'm pleased with how it turned out. This was my first attempt at replicating European ground in the winter.  I did it in my usual manner then added some Woodland Scenics Snow I bought the other day.  To make it look less powdered sugar-like, I sprayed the white with gloss to simulate wetness.  I still wanted a donut afterwards,so I may go back and dirty it up more.

That's it.  Comments welcome..

Joe

Thanks Bish. Does anyone know how to change the words in the title now? I want to change it from "in-progress" to "finished". There doesn't seem t be a way to edit the first post anymore. Ugh this new format...

Nope....mine seems be void of an "edit" on most of my entries. Only a few of them show it........weird. I don't know, I liked this site the way it was before.

Ok, that is strange. There seem to be a few issues that are not affecting everyone. This new site is certainly taking some getting used to.

Just excellent, Joe, the finish is quite a departure from the standard 109 fare I'm used to seeing. The winter scene base is really convincing, looks about like mid March at a German airfield, miserable conditions.

Any info about whether the pilot survived and went home after release? BIG THANKS for sharing this beaut.

Superb! =] I always love the challenge of a new paint scheme. You tackled this one well. The snow is quite convincing as well. That gloss finish makes all this difference it seems. Any other tips for working with it?

Thanks guys.  Patrick, I couldn't find much about the pilot, just some info about the plane on some forums.  I just thought that was an interesting tidbit.  There should probably be a space after the 1 where the three should go, but I read that info after it was decaled...Bang Head.  I've also seen a real picture that was allegedly of this plane and the 1 is where I put it, so who knows.

Thanks for the compliments on the snow.

I have no idea how I missed this thread. Oops

That is a stellar paint scheme, Joe. Your finished product is a stunner and whomever you  built it for must be a happy camper.

I'm working with my first CMK resin cockpit myself. It is different.

Surely do like the compressor, and wish I'd have gotten a tanked version myself.

So in the end, what is your assessment of the Gunze Aqueous (and from where did you procure it?)

Nice job, and thanks for another great WIP. Toast

I also just came across this thread, fantastic 109 Joe, just love the late models (even if they are bumpy).  You're locked in on putting a kit together, great work (come along way on those antenae wires too Wink)

Must say after returning to the "new" format, it ain't happening for me.  I've yet to figure out how to get the most recent posts in "your discussions" to pull upTongue Tied

Thanks guys...Greg, I generally use Gunze for RLM colors and US Olive Drab, as I think they're the best out of the bottle to my eye. The downside is that they are sort of translucent and take alot of paint to get the right consistency.  Its also semi-gloss paint and dries slower than Tamiya.

The owner of the plane has popped in here to check out the progress.  I've been selling some of my builds on ebay and he has bought a few of them.  We quickly became friends and now I'm building planes for him, this being the first.  Next is it Great Wall FW 189 and then the Eduard P-39/400 which I will post here too.  I think he might have a HS 129 in the wings too.  Imagine doing something you love and getting paid for it. Maybe I can retire early....lol.

Interestingly, I pulled up FSM on my phone and I found an edit button for the title.  WEIRD.....

Thanks again for all the kind words everyone...

Wow! That looks great. I love the camo scheme, and I agree - green 109s seem different, but I like it.

You also nailed the European winter ground details. Great job all around. I'm still envious of your cockpits. I hope to get there someday.

Thanks for sharing.
