Looking good Bish. The scheme looks very cool.

When spraying gloss paints, I find that if you thin them a tad more than normal, they spray much better and that glass finish is easier to capture. This comes in very handy when dealing with priming for an Alclad finish. I'm no fan of acrylics and favor enamels and lacquers hands down.

Ye, i think i need to pay more attention to my mix. You would think after all these yerasi would have figured that out by now.

Another short update.I got the decals on the other day. After i finished those, i realise dthat i really should have done some fading with the airbrush. This is the first time i have done a desert aircraft since i started serious weatheirng and in 72nd scale i would have done this with dry brushing. But with this larger scale, the fading would have been better with the air brush. So one lesson i have lkearmnt is to treat 32nd aircraft similar to 35th armour rather than smaller scale aircraft. I had also starte dthe exhaust staining when i took these.

And then some weathering. I was originally going to go for the lighter touch. But i found some info that this aircrfat was older than i had thought. Apparently it had crashed earlier in the year and then repaired before Marseille got hold of her.

For the weathering i used Flory Wash dark dirt top and bottom and then dry brushed the top.

One point on the Flory Wash. You can see that the bottom is cleane rthan the top.Despite the top getting a future coat is was less glss than the top. The flory wash sticks more to the flatter finish but just slids off the gloss. It can be removed from the flat finsih, but it does take some work, but its really hard to keep in on the gloss. So if you wnat a clener finish with it just in the panel lines, its best applied to glss. If you want a more grubby look, use it on a flat surface.

I'll do a little more to the underside once the flat clear coat is applied, hopefuly tomorrow.

I posted this in the 109 GB last night. Plasticjunkie then suggested a yellow orche filter to help with fading. Again, i should have thought of this from armour building. So tonight i have given it 2 coats of flat acrylic clear to protect the paint from the oil wash. I am going to go easy with that as the dry brushing has left a good effect and i don't want to over due it. So more soon.

Thnaks for looking, all comments welcome of course.

Thanks BK. I know there are a few areas I can improve on next time, but it has been quite a learning curve jumping up so much in scale.

Looking great Bish. I just scored the 1/48th version off ebay. I'll use your thread as a reference.

This is turning out fantastic, Bish. You can still get the faded effect you are after. White artist's oil over the gloss cote and rub it on the upper surfaces like I did with my 109. You have a lot of control with the effect so if you don't like it you can simply wipe it off.

You can also try a light brown and maybe a yellow in a few places to give it some randomization. Have fun with it.

Oh, and you're making me feel guilty for not finishing my 109. Stop it lol.  Embarrassed

A great looking build, Bish. Good luck with applying your filters to add some tonal variations and modulation.

This is a color scheme that I want to have a go at on a Tropical 109E, it's another one of the multitude of great camo schemes used by the Luftwaffe.

Have fun!

Cheers,

Martin :)

Thanks guys. Mike, I will keep those in mind. The filters gave me the results I wanted on this one, and its so close to finish I am just itching to get my first 32nd build on the shelf. But I like the sound of those ides. Was the white oil point on before or after the decals. UK, I do rather like the 109E with the dark spots over it, I think I have one of those in 72nd scale. I am not so much trying to get modulation, I don't really go in for that, and I would not usually worry about fading a great deal. But given the climate and duration this aircraft spent in it, I did feel some fading was a good idea.

All of the weathering I did on my 109 was after the decals were on and sealed up. I just think of planes and weathering in the same way I weather armor. Dirt gets on the markings just like anything else that is painted on the surface of the plane. Just makes simple sense to me.

Plus its super forgiving. a little dot of oil and rub it around to blend it to the suface. Dot filtering just like we do on our tanks. You just stick to a primary color such as white for a faded effect.

Do a wing at a time  or one side of the fuse to keep from rubbing it off while you handle it. My effects are done on a matte finish and they don't blend as well as on a smooth surface, but the results are still nice.

Whatever you choose to do, this is still an excellent build. So if you're happy with it, then that's all that matters.  :)

Thanks Mike. It is just about done now, just got to secure it to the base and a few bits to do on the figure. After the wash, I was at that stage where I could look at it and think, ye, I like that. That's usually when I know to leave well alone and just finish off. But I have defiantly made a note of those ideas. My main aim with this build was to get to grips with the construction in a larger scale, so I just wanted to keep the scheme and weathering nice and simple. There has been so much to take in with this, its surprising how different it can be

Bish. Way to branch out on the scale. Do you see yourself doing anymore 1/32 soon? It is to me, what 1/72 has been to you. I can only imagine what it will be like to get to some of the 1/48 in my stash.

Some easy overall weathering is tamiya smoke, especially over sealed decals. Or, a home brew of very highly thinned tamiya red brown mixed with black. I do double coat everything with future before weathering.

Looking great Bish. Now you need to do a 1/32 Dora.Wink

The decals should be on when you do your weathering so that the markings have the same fading/staining as the rest of the aircraft. Glad the yellow ochre worked. This is an excellent color used in a wash to get that faded look you want. The heavier you go, the dustier and crusty it looks. Just depends on the look you want.

Thanks Tom. I do have some other 32nd scale kits, 10 or so. I just wanted a small selection of German aircraft in a larger scale. Of course, I never defined small Wink. But i am being rather selective and there are only really a couple of otehr kits i would like to get. I plan on doign anotehr next year. I would like to do one of my twin engined builds, but display space is a bit of an issue at the minute. So i am thinking one of the 2 German jets i have, probably the He 162.

I did double coat this with clear before i did the wash. I have made the mistake on armour twice of not protecting it properly before adding an oil wash onto enamel paint. Did not want to repeat that error.

PJ, thanks again for that tip. I do have a 190D, but thats part of a rather large project i have wanted to do for about 20 years which started out at 4 1/72nd kits and has now grown to 8 kits a bust and a 32nd figure. I'll get to that one of these days.

I did think that about the decals, should have been obvious to me really lol.

Should have the completed pics up tomorrow.

Well, i guess its time to call this done. My first 32nd scale aircrfat is almost 30 years of building models.

After the last thread i took PJ's suggestion and did a filter wash with Yellow Orche oil. I did add a small drop of white and did the wash very thin and the result was just what i wanted, so thanks again PJ.

On the underside i re-did the flory wash with dark dirt and then another with sand.

Next upwas fitting the clear parts to the canopy. As you can see, the clear acotate has a paper backing with the outline of each piece. the instructions say that once cut, they should be soaked in water to remove the paper, but it came off easily enough without.

I cut two piece out at a time to avoid mixing them up, dipped them in future and after 30 mins drying fitted them. Most fitted no problem, but the centre pieces, which should have been fitted before the inner frame, needed some trimmng.

Once all fitted, the canopy was fitted along with the antena wire and that was it.

I added some MiG and AK pigments to the wheels legs and around the wheel wells.

Then it was just adding it to the base, fitting the propand adding the figure and its done.

And finally, i wanted to do a comparison. For those who may have only built in one scale, or only made a small change, here you can see what a big jump this is for me. Apart from a few 48th kits early on, i have been building 72nd aircraft ever since i started modelling. But now my sole 72nd 109, a hase G-6, has a big brother.

And thats it. Thanks allfor loking and for all the comments. I am so chuffed to finally make a start in the 32nd stash. As i mentioned earlier, i hope to be able todo at least one more next year.

Now onto the next build.

Thanks a lot Mike, much appreciated. I have really been able to get to grips with my figures in the last year or so, after many years, I finally am able to be happy with them. It took a bit of work to get the tan right, but I am rather please with it.
