WIP Tamiya 1:32 Supermarine Spitfire Mk. VIII
Posted by Toshi on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 7:27 PM

To my fellow forum members,

I write this in an estatic state of excitement as I start this kit.  First off it's a 1:32 Tamiya, and second, most importantly, it's my first ever British aircraft.  Out of all the British planes to inauguraly start off with, I happen to choose one of the most famous and superior fighter aircraft of the allies.  A Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII.  I could have had the choice of the Mk. V, Mk. IX, or the Mk. XVI.  I simply chose the VIII as it was one of the fastest and highest flight Spitfire to be produced.

Sure, the Mk. V and Mk. IX were produced in much larger numbers but the VIII just happens to have finer detailed lines than the other two.  Of course this is just my humble opinion.

As for this particular kit, the Mk. VIII comprises nearly 400 parts in grey plastic, 17 parts in clear, two nickel plated PE frets, six parts in flexible vinyl, eight steel pins, seven rare earth miniature magnets, various small screws and metal parts, a self adhesive (uncut) masking sheet for the canopy parts, two metallic self-adhesive name plates, and two decal sheets with markings for three aircrafts.

The unique thing with this build is that I procured a "How to build a Tamiya 1:32 Spitfire" manual.  It features the work of Brett Green, Chris Wauchop, and Dave Johnson.  Hopefully I can transpose what I read and see into my build of what these professionals accomplish.  Until I get to that point, here is what I have broken down thus far.

This is going to be epic Toshi! I love the Spit and I've heard nothing but rave reviews of this kit. Looking forward to watching her come together.

Until tomorrow, I will stop for this evening and try to go to bed early for a change.  I will have more updates as I continue the build.  Thank you forum members for your love and dedication to this wonderful hobby!

Yes, I also think so.  Building this kit with the how to Tamiya book is a blast.

Oh boy -

This will be such a fun build to follow, can't until lunch break tomorrow to see the completion, (you are Toshi after all.)  (:>)

What will you use for paint? I can't recall if you are using enamel, or have you gone to acrylics by now. This should be something to really keep you busy and show your greatly improved skills, looking forward to seeing lots of photos and WIP reports. Thanks, Buddy.

Be careful, Toshi. Your interior color in incorrect. Spits, especailly late, did not use interior green.    I believe Tam recomends XF-71.  Thats a great color -- even right out of the bottle for most Spits.

I utilized the interior green as that was a close match to the XF-71 as well as the color photo in the "How to build a Spitfire" Tamiya book.  I'll take note and be much more careful in my choice of authentic colorization as I continue this build.  Thank you for the heads up, it's extremely important to me.

LOL!  Don't eat lunch!  LOL!  I don't.  As for paints, I still have Testors enamel paints in my inventory.  So I'm trying to use it up and replace the enamel as I go through these builds.  I'm replacing the Testors enamels with Model Master acrylics as well as Tamiya Acrylics.  I've also just started to purchase a small amount of Vallejo acrylics as well.

As a example with this build, the whole kit has been sprayed with Tamiya lacquer gray primer and I used Testors metallic silver enamel to paint part of the interior with the rest of the interior painted with Tamiya interior green acrylic.  This makes cleaning the AB a difficult situation, I have to use lacquer thinner, enamel thinner, and acrylic cleaner with the later being a lot easier.

As you're more than aware, lacquer and enamel thinner stinks and makes cleaning a chore.  Here in Northeast Ohio we will have severe winters starting in a few months lasting for almost 5 months.  Using volatile cleaners indoors with the windows closed can be detrimental to everyone's health.  Hence my insistence in switching over to acrylics.  Your observation is very accurate in regards to the type of paints I'll be using.

You are correct my friend, this build will keep me busy and keep me on my toes.  With my "How to build a Spitfire" book, it will challenge my skills with this model.  I will definitely have fun while assembling this kit.  Ultimately, right or wrong, having fun is what's this hobby and or any hobby is about.  That's something I've learned from you sir as well as other forum members.  I thank you for that.

Also thank you for following my threads and your inquiries, it's extremely important to me and I highly appreciate it.  Replying back as you can read, helps with my cognition.  I would like to apologize ahead of time if my writing is or can be not clear at times, I try to continue to do my best in writing my threads as well as building my model kits.

Toshi

P.S. In regards to paints, preparing for winter, I just purchased a paintbooth.  This should and will assist in and with my AB.

Friend Toshi -

Never ANY need for apology about either your modeling skills or writing, you make everything quite clear and very understandable. You get really high marks for your persistence and discipline focused on your rehab, what you have encountered is quite tramatic indeed, TBI is something that needs that devotion for a successful recovery. I'd say you're well along the way.

True story, your model building skills have advanced MUCH faster than mine did when I got started. I believe you have only to look at your earliest build, then compare it with your last completion and you can very well see how rapidly you have advanced.

Only my personal input, but I see much more clarity of thought in your writing abilities now as well. I can relate to your thoughts of replying to members as being of good therapy. I'm among those enjoying seeing your WIP reports and all of the photos, it's not easy to organize all of that and you do it very well, plus I really like communicating back and forth with you.

Looking forward to seeing this 'Spit get the Toshi treatment, and happy to learn you now have a paint booth, a wise investment indeed. (I'm sure Mrs. Toshi will also be happy you have that booth.)

Be well, Buddy.

Don't sell yourself short there buddy. Your builds are very good and it doesn't matter how long we have been modeling, we still learn new things me included. I have been building since the late 60's and I have learned many new techiques from other members here and I keep gathering intel for better builds. This is an ongoing process.

I know it gets cold up your way but man it's freaking hot here in Central Florida, and even worse in my neck of the woods down in Miami. I can't wait to get cooler weather!

Very nice start, Toshi! I can't wait to see you go through this one. I like the scheme, too. Those Grey Nurse shark-mouth Spitfires are way too cool. I built one of the Eduard ones earlier this year and had an absolute blast with it. It's still my favorite finished product.

I thank you.  You're too kind!  It seems that all my doctors have seen some semblance to recovery.  Mrs. Toshi thinks so as well.  Next week, I start my MENTIS once a week program, followed by a at home caregiver.  I'll probably drive the caregiver nuts and make he or she quit before the time is up.  LOL!

When I receive my paint booth, I'll snap a photo and share it with you all on FSM forum.  Thank you for the read and reply.

Yes, it's for the RAAF "Royal Australian Air Force".  The Grey Nurse Shark mouth motif is from the 457th Squadron.  I too think it's very cool.  Thank you for the read and reply.

Your coming right along nicely with your Spitfire Toshi.  Getting a book on modeling the subject  was a fine idea and with your postings, we will all benefit from it.

You will probably turn your caregiver into a modeler as well  lol

Thank you my friend, I greatly appreciate it.  The book is great, I already purchased some thin copper wiring to run wires through the Spitfire.  I'll attempt to do some wires on the engine and the cockpit.

Thank you,
