1:48 Tamiya Japanese A6M5 - First Build and First WIP COMPLETED 2/27/16

Hunter, I have been following your build and each time I got caught up I couldn't believe how well you were doing.  That plane is georgeous.  Great work!  I am positive that your Dad is smiling down on you and is very proud of your accomplishment.  Keep up the great work.

Holy cow!  Well done.  A great effort and a fantastic looking kit.  BTW... I absolutely love my Vertigo stand.  Handy little tool to have on the bench for sure.

Thats a nice start back in the hobby. I think you have picked up plenty of tips fom the guys, and those eduard masks are definatly worth it, especially for multi panel canopy's. Look forward to seeing more of your builds to come.

Other than the fuselage Hinomarus being a bit too high, I'd say not to shabby for your first build. I don't know if its been suggested, but on your next build, see if Eduard masks are available for the canopies. They're worth it. Spruebrothers.com normally carries them.

Hello everyone - 

Well, I finally completed this great kit. I found that the build itself was great do to the fact of a well designed and instructed kit from Tamiya. As I got to the final stages that is were I found I need to work on my approach and technique. I found that it is hard to hand paint certain things if not done right (LOL). Well, here she is so please don't hesitate to point out any defects or suggestions to better improve my skills. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LOOKING IN ON MY BUILD AND FOR ALL THE KIND WORDS, TIPS, SUGGESTIONS AND SUPPORT I HAVE RECEIVED.

I ran out of paint so I ordered a new can today so I can finish the canopy. Newbie lol

Thank you for the insight and I will make sure to do that. The seam lines on top of the wings were very faint, so maybe next build I can highlight them with a soft black under coat. Thank you for looking back in on my build and for the helpful suggestion.

She came out beautiful Hunter. I continue to have seam issues on my aircraft builds, haven't even thought of re -scribing yet, trying to be judicious about filler and sanding. But I just blame the kit and go on to next one.

Very nice for a first build.  The only two nits I see are the rear wing/fuselage seam on the bottom and the lack of panel lines on the top of the fuselage behind the cockpit, after you filled the seam and sanded.  No biggie on either, but might look at re-scribing those on future projects. 

 

Overall, me are impressed!!

Wow....I just got my login issue resolved. Man I was going through withdrawls and the shakes(lol). 

Yes friend I am going to paint the canopy and decal tonight. I planned on painting the canopy by hand. I should have done what Fermis suggested....applied the canopy, masked it off and painted all at one time. Lesson learned.

I opened the "Albatross" box today....all I can say is OMG!  LOL....I hope you are well friend.

Wow....Finally back in after that little issue. 

As you can see I am at the finally leg of my build. Tonight I should have the decals on and be finished. This has been a great build and I look forward too many more. As always, thank you for looking in on my build.

Any and all suggestions, tips and techniques are greatly welcomed

The size of this site makes them harder to find, but there is a lot out there.

Nice find. We call those "Scoopers" or "Fire Birds". I'd love to build one, I'll start surfing the online stores to find one. I know my LHS nor Hobby Lobby will not have one. Thank you for the info and I'll search the Aircraft forum to find a past GB so I can look them over.

 

 I worked on a Hotshot crew and as a dispatcher during the summer from 88 to 92 and been on the receiving end a few times from drops done from the Privateer, A26 and the CL 415.  Saw the PBYs at both Kalispell and Lewistown a few times but never saw them drop. I was glad I got to work the fire line back when the old bombers were still being used.

Built it a few years ago and loved every minute of it. Hard to pick a better kit to get started on - it has everything - great fit, easy assembly, excellent detail.......you'll enjoy it.
