1/48 Hasegawa Arado 234 Blitz-After 3 years..Finally Completed

I black based this beast this morning and got a fairly even coat on it. I used the same method I use for my autos that I paint in black using semi gloss black for a base. I'm pretty happy with this.

Thanks Tony. Was going to get back on it this morning but ended up going to a San Antonio Commanders AAF football game in SA yesterday. Long day needless to say. Great game though!

Wondeful progress there Joe. I am immensely interested in seeing how your attempt at mottling turns out. Well, I'm quite sure it will turn out beautifully though.

I haven't taken the time to watch a full AAF game yet but, excited that Salt Lake has a team. Sounds as though they are quite fun. Bummer they lost to SA yesterday though.

Thanks Joe! Had to smooth the paint job out a little more this morning. There's something about this batch of paint that I'm not liking. It's not drying fully and that's after waiting a few days. No worries though. After a coat or two of color I'll be able to handle it a little more. lol

Ok gang. I got the gray primer ready this morning and shot my attempt at a marble effect on. I heard on the radio that it's National Scribble Day today so it's fitting. We'll be jumping from here on the rest of the assembly and camo scheme.

Just so I’m keeping score at home... 

First you primed black, now you’ve marbled gray. Next you will paint light coats of the camouflage over top?

I'm really not sure how to take that but that's the intent alright.

Haha I just meant that I’m trying to learn a new trick, and figure out how to have some more realistic finishes on my birds. 

I gotta say, your primer looks better than all of my paint jobs I’ve ever done haha, except maybe one... a rattle can job I did when I was like 12 years old!

I hear ya. Reason I ask is depending  on what you go with it may help to put one more coat of either a lighter grey scale or a muted lighter color within the color range of what goes on top but laid down in a tighter fashion of marbling. Just another way to add depth to your surface. 

Thanks Britt. I'm going to do just that because I wasn't just real happy with the attempt that I made here. I used my Badger 200 for the marble job but have other weapons of choice in my arsenal.

In the picture below starting from the bottom and working up is my trusty 200 that I LOVE!! Then the 150 and then the Renegade Velocity. The Velocity I know will do that tighter pattern but I haven't really tried the 150 yet. I may test them both out on a test subject to see what I get out of it.

The Arado is looking great Joe. A tight mottling scheme will look great but most of the marbling will be lost in the pattern.

I have a Renegade and it’s awesome at laying down hair thin lines with the right paint/thinner ratio. I use it for any xtra fine details like tight mottling and feather edging.

Thanks Ernie. I went ahead and decided to go with the 150 this time around for times sake. I didn't feel like going through the hassle of cleaning that Velocity this morning and the 150 lends itself to easy clean up so.....we went with that. Maybe next time on the V.

Well to be perfectly honest I couldn't resist and I went back over it again in a much tighter pattern with my Badger 150 after not using it for the past 5 years. I'm actually a lot happier with the results this time around..

Looking really good Joe! Getting the tighter marbling was a good idea. I think the larger black patches you had beforebwould have really shown through and been too stark against the rest of the paint...or at least that’s what I’ve found

 Thanks for clearing that up Max.  I run into good guys on forums and then we all meet ............the clowns. Sometimes the spirit of the message is lost in the text so I really appreciate your comments. My primer coat is the same kind of primer I use on all of my black auto builds. It lays down nice and smooth and by the time I get the marble and top coats on it'll flatten out alot.

 

 

Sorry if it seemed as I was venturing into clown territory... I’ve been here long enough to see a few of those! Just a poorly executed attempt at some levity. Ask my wife how good I am at that!

I’ve tried black basing on two of my latest kits, and while I’m super happy with the results on the underside, I’ve been less impressed up top. The marbling technique you’ve employed here might be worth a shot on my end for my next build. 

Anyway, sorry for any confusion. I’m just looking forward to seeing this one wrapped up!

No worries Max. What happened with the results on the upper surfaces on your build?

The colors were too dark to get a really good effect. Black beneath camouflage on a BoB Spitfire and a late war Zero with green topside camouflage was just too much for black basing I think. A mottle like you are working on look to be the way to go. 

Plus I tend to be heavy with the paint sometimes...

I hear what your saying Max. A dark base color would tend to get in the way of a darker base color. Like it's defeating the purpose kind of.

It appears that you have done a right sharp job on creating the base for the mottling effect. I do hope it turns out to your expectations. 

I regret that I have not been on top of following along here lately. I've had family visiting which kept me off the forums for a while.

I am really looking forward to seeing some paint going on your Arado.
