I did forget to mention earlier that I thought your building the kit cockpit to use as a visual reference for the resin one was extremely clever. Pluse, it provided an interesting visual for your WIP.

Also, that you did very nice work on that hand painting.

 

I've heard and read so many issues about resin kits that I wanted to double check my work hence the duplicate building of the cockpit.  Plus at times I need the practice and patience!  LOL!

You did a fantastic job on the "fork-tailed devil" Toshi. I think the gap issues you encountered more often than not is typical of the complex layout of the aircraft. Just the nature of the beast so to speak. Again, fantastic job!

Toshi, I think you did an exceptionally nice job on this one. The finish and decal work look excellent.

I'm rethinking the spraying of anything except acrylics indoors due to a recent unpleasant lung-related diagnosis in my household, so I'm more than a little bit interested that your Vallejo Chrome finish looks so good.

Could you tell me a little more about using tamiya extra thin for decal setting? I missed that discussion.

 

I was extremely gratified that the Eduard Brassin Resin Set worked out well. Everything fit almost perfectly.  I did a resin cockpit for a Revell 1/32 F4U-Corsair.  It was a disaster at best!  LOL!  

I'm sorry to hear about your lung-related issues, I hope that this will all pass.  The Vallejo Chrome finish is very pressure sensitive.  It must be shot at or between 15 to 20 psi.  Other than that, it sprays beautifully.  Also make sure the surface that you will be spraying on is or without any blemishes as this paint will pick it up.

There really was no discussion involved with using the Tamiya Extra Thin Cement so you missed nothing at all.  What I do, when I have issues with decals laying down is to place the afore mentioned decal in place, get a little Tamiya Extra Thin cement and just slowly touch the outside of the decal.  And that's all there is to it.  Like anything else, it's a trial and error practice. And mine was more error than anything else!  LOL!

I don't know how I missed this one Toshi. You did a very good job on this P-38 and I'm glad your resin parts dropped in place without any modification. usually they don't just drop in and need lots of tweeking. The resin pit was a huge improvement over the included kit's.

You are correct about those decals being a PITA to work with. I guess you forgot when I mentioned the same thing in another thread you had going about the P-38 but the modern Academy decals printed by Cartograph are a pleasure to work with so that problem has been corrected by Academy.

The gaps you mentioned were not your doing cause I had similar issues when I built mine but I was able to Tenax those gaps and the melted plastic filled the thin voids so I ended up using PPP in two small spots only.

Yes, I totally forgot about the decal issue.  That's my TBI.  Sorry about that.  I'm glad that  Cartograph is the new decal carrier for Academy.

As for the fit and finish, I had no idea it was not my fault.  I thought I had the whole airframe twisted to one side and that it was not square.  WOW, that's a shameful mistake on Academy's part.  Really?  Shame on them!  Thank you so much for the information.

Hi Toshi. I got the Vallejo Metal Color Aluminum, and ordered their gloss black primer. Based on your recommendation, I will be trying this out on a plastic bottle before I tackle a model to get a sense of how it sprays. I have two old Monograms that will need NMF (P51 with bubble canopy and a P47). It's going to be a while, as my progress on the FW 190 is glacially slow, and my next build will likely be an old Tamiya Panzer II. I really like your wall of fame. I can see a couple of builds I followed while you were doing them.

Maybe it's just me but all of the Academy decals are tough to deal with.  They are on the thicker side.  I have to use Tamiya Extra Thin Cement to lay it down properly.  This technique can be difficult at best.  The tri-color prop is actually decals.  They were a PITA to deal with.  Whoa!  Lots of adjustments were needed to fix the prop decals on.

Cutting, sanding, and forming the turbochargers were a challenge as it was really thin.  I had to be very delicate with the turbochargers.  As for the PE on the turbochargers, they are as you mentioned a very nice enhancement to the kit itself.  In fact the Eduard Brassin AM kit was well worth the cost and effort.

I just moved from a three bedroom condo to a two bedroom condo, so space is a premium.  I hang my models on the wall.  Thank you sir for this conversation and support in my projects, I greatly appreciate it!

Here is the finally finished Academy 1/48 P-38 Lightning "Putt Putt Maru".  As for a recommendation in regards to this kit, I highly recommend this kit.  But I would definately as an enhancement purchase the Eduard Brassin Kit.   It lights up the Academy kit.  Anyway, it's time to start my next kit, the Academy 1/72 TBF Avenger. I messed up with the subsequent blackout design on the "Putt Putt Maru"!  It is a unique design so I added the enhancement and pin striped it yellow all by free hand brushing.  Here are the results.

Thank you for your kind comment on my P-38 Lightning "Putt Putt Maru".  A lot of what I learned was from your builds and from forum members builds as well.  The hardest part was the fitting of the main nacelle as I noticed that that's what is the issue with most P-38's kits.  

Moving forward, I have definately learned patience and timing of builds.  I think those are the two most important facets of a build especially timing.  When to glue or paint a part prior to assembly and patience on when to move forward.  Thank you BrandonK for your support and always reading and replying on my builds, this fact is most appreciated!

Here are some photos of the P-38 Lightning "Putt Putt Maru" in natural lighting.  Or what you can call natural lighting in North East Ohio during this time of the year.  We don't get much sun at all.  But one thing that is very uncommon is the fact that it is almost 60 degrees now!  WOW!  

I took these photos early as I'm going to be watching the NFL Playoffs this sunday afternoon.  For those of you that are rabid fans like myself of the NFL, I think that the two teams that will be in the SuperbowL will be the Greenbay Packers vs New England Patriots.  That's my guesstimate!  LOL!  I have the Patriots as the Super Bowl winners!  I think?  Anyways, enjoy the photos below.  I really like how the turbochargers came out!  It was painted with Walmart craft painys of Burnt Sienna and Gun Metal with a Burnt Umber wash.  The item surrounding the turbochargers are Eduard PE to look like burnt dirty NMF.  I think that was a pretty cool part on behalf of Eduard.

On this kit, some of my challenges were the work on a resin cockpit as I've never done a complete one before.  I also had several fit and gap issues due to my incompetence but I was able to overcome these issues with your and forum members help in the way of everyone's works via the threads you all produce at such a high level that I hope one day to achieve.  Thank you so much for your support in this P-38 project!

It's 4:26am as I write this addition to this thread.  For some strange reason, it's one of those days of which I awoke at 2:00am and decided to work on my Putt Putt Maru.  With this in mind, I don't know what possessed me but I decided to do the black out free hand with no tape demarcation lines.  What I did was to follow the panel lines and to the best of my abilities I did the radius as best as I could.

If you look closely at the photos the blackout is not perfect by any means and you can definately tell it was done all by free hand brush work.  I just wanted to see how well I could do it as well as to challenge myself if I could.  I'm taking new medication called Lyrica, it has definately helped with my chronic pain and has steadied my shakey hands.  My fellow brothers and sisters, tell me what you think on my free hand brush work.  All comments good or bad are more than welcomed, I can only learn from this experience.  

Let me just say that I had to go over several times with black and chrome paint to correct any discrepancies.  And boy did I have a lot!  LOL!  Also as you can see, I have assembled the resin wheels and in my humble opinion they look fantastic compared to the OOB stock kit wheels.  I'm also pleased with the masking done on the canopy which was interesting at best.  My next step is to work on the P-38 Lightning's resin turbochargers.  They need to be cut out, sanded, and painted.  There are some PE parts that go with the turbochargers.  

Thank you so much for all of your support my brothers and sisters.  This experience for the last twenty one months has not only healed and TBI progress but has brought me so much closer to humanity because of all the love you have all given me.  I find this forum my life line as I get to meet and greet fantastic people from all over the world.

Being that this was a NMF, the paint sceme although singular was most challenging as you well know the any defect will show up ten times ten through the NMF chrome paint.  And you know me, I'm not all that capable! LOL!  But I do try.  Thank you sir for always supporting my projects!

While waiting for the NMF coat on the Lightning to cure I am working on the wheels assembly and painting.  All of the items you see below are from the Eduard Brassin Kit.  The wheel assemblies are all cast in resin.

I appolagize for the lighting as I was too excited to wait for the sun tomorrow to take a photo shoot of the Lightning.  So I used some LED lights instead.  As you can see it is not the best photo but at least everyone can see the progress and outcome of this kit.  Thank you for the support in my projects.  I greatly appreciate the visits and conversations as it's important for me to continue with threads of WIP for my TBI therapy.

Don't forget that if you end up wanting to have the plane leaning backward (as Lawdog had his), Lawdog discovered (too late) that the center of gravity shifted so that his model would have become a tail sitter were it not for fixing the front wheel to his diorama. I'm not sure if you can load enough ballast in the nose to compensate for that shift but it's something to keep in mind.

 Interesting at best, I've never used so much Tamiya White Putty before.  I don't know why, how, what, when, or where all these gaps happened.  But I'm not going to complain about it nor point blame to anyone except myself.  Ultimately, it challenged me into moving forward and now my next step is to add the canopy, mask it and then clean it up one more time for primer.  Thank you forum members for your patience and support in my projects!

Thank you lawdog114.  I have to agree with you in that this is a very well detailed resin cockpit.  For me at least, it fit perfectly sans the IP.  Yes, I already have my weights ready to be installed.

Looking good Tosh.  That's one of the nicest resin pits I've every used.....nicely detailed  It's kind of a pain to get in there though.  Don't forget weight in the nose so it doesn't tail drag.  Here's my build of this subject I built back in July should you need a reference.  same kit boxed by Eduard...

 As you can see, I had some issues gap wise on one of the nacelles.  The other side fit like a glove so it had to be my fault.  A little Tamiya putty and a couple of grades of sandpaper fixed this issue without any more problems.  You would think I would have issues with the resin kit, it was quite the opposite.  LOL!

You are definitely doing this kit justice. Do be careful with the fit of the cockpit. Test fit and double check.

Your office came out really nice Toshi and i sure can see the differance between the kit parts and the AM stuff. Funny that my kit came with a PE IP which probably won't fit like you say lol.

 

And as I mentioned, you can't even see the IP when installed.  Weird stuff going on here.  LOL!  Thanks for the visit!

Beautiful Toshi. =] I very much hoped to get one of these Eduard brassin kit combos when they first came out, but it was just a bit too much money at the time...and I was saving for a ring. You are definitely doing this kit justice. Do be careful with the fit of the cockpit. Test fit and double check.

Expect the unexpected!  I couldn't figure out for the life of me why the kit cockpit had no IP when the AM Brassin provided a PE/Resin IP.  Then while doing a canopy dry fitting, I found out why!  You can't have an IP or the nose will not close up.  On the kit and the AM cockpit once installed (Dry fit) you can't see the IP anyway.  

That's a shame as the AM IP is a four piece nicely detailed bit as you can see by the photo below.  Oh well, better to find out now than later.  Measure twice, cut once.  LOL!

To to my fellow forum members,

Thank you so much for your support in my projects.  It is greatly appreciated and humbles me much as I'm just a novice in this hobby compared to you all.  I've found that by utilizing the OOB cockpit as a template to the Eduard/Brassin resin set helps greatly with adjustments in height and width.  So far I'm on par with the OOB cockpit.  I've also dry fitted the resin cockpit into the fueselage and have yet to detect any discrepancies but it is still too early to really tell.  I'll know for sure as things move along.

Below are three photos of where I'm at this early evening.  As of this point, there are no issues nor concerns with the kit part or the AM parts.  Everything has fallen into place as per the directions of which is a great thing.  But we as modelers know that we must always expect the unexpected!  LOL!  Until then, please enjoy these photos.

Hey Toshi, great to see your build progress. I am wrapping up my 1/48 Academy P-38 as we speak. i was about where you are 1 year ago. I went with  the Aires cockpit and had a hell of a time getting it to fit. It also caused a domino effect of seam and fitting issues around the nose area that took some filling and alot of sanding. I think youll be better off with the Eduard cockpit. This was my first Academy kit and I learned pretty quickly not to hold it up to Tamiya standards. However, the boom attachment and alignment went quite well with zero fuss. With some elbow grease this kit has some good potential. i'll be watching your progress. Good luck!

I know Academy is a great kit but it's definately not at a Tamiya standard.  They do try with some success.  I hope my build will come out half as good as your kit does.  Thank you for your support!

First set of PE installed.  As usual, it's the seat belts.  I'm so used to 1/32 PE, I forgot how small 1/48 PE is.  LOL!  So far dry fit looks good.

With that being said, I can highly recommend the Eduard Brassin AM kit.  The detail is amazing!  Intricately done yet very delicate.  The resin in some cases must be treated as if it were PE.  Yes, it's that thin and worse, it won't bend like PE.  LOL!  It's always my pleasure to post these threads, it is I that am thankful for you and forum members for following my projects!

I figured that the only way to get a good fit is to assemble the OOB parts and then assemble the resin pieces part by part and compare the two.
