Mike, it was a pleasure watching this one come together, and if I may echo the previous comments, you did this one proud. Excellent work on everything. Thanks for sharing.
John
Excellent, excellent finish of this kit, Mike. It is perfect weathering as these were brand new in 1940 straight out of the Curtiss factory. You are the one who inspired me to get this kit, and to also get two P-36's to do. One is the original AMT kit which will be done as an 18th PS plane in May 1942 with OD, red and white tail stripes, and red dot stars as depicted in Dana Bell's Air Force Colors, volume 1. The second one is an Academy PH version done as one of the planes flown off the USS Enterprise in February 1941 for Hawaii. Thanks Mike

You guys are much too kind! I haven't even ventured into scratch building yet, but one day I will. My biggest downfall is paitence, lol. But if I set my mind on something I usually can pull it off.
mustang1989 Keyda81 Beautiful! I have this one in my stash, but I don't think I could make it look half as nice as you have! Don't kid yourself Keyda. In seeing your work I'd beg to differ.

See! I'm not the only one who knows you CAN.

1943Mike It looks great to me Mike. I think the paint job looks very good indeed. I enjoy seeing some classic warbirds without too much weathering applied.

Thank you so much, Mike! The only other kit I built in this manner was my Lindberg Stuka and that turned out pretty well too.
I may just keep this trend up with these older kits.
mustang1989 Well hey there Mike! It's been a loooooong time since I've talked to you but I just had to come see this beauty of a P-40 that you've got goin' on here. I'm trying to make it out of the auto section more these days. Everything about this one looks good: Paint, cals, details.....man! Really hit a home run here!!

Lol. I've been watching your builds in silence, my friend. Thank you! Thank you very much! The kit decals went down without a single issue. Kinda weird for Revell decals lol. Just three more to finish up before i pull out another Revell kit from the stash. Lol
You're kidding, right? Keyda, you have more than demonstrated your talent for this level of work. You COULD do this. We just have to convince you of it more, I guess. But you have shown us you have the talent.
Besides, if you build it, we will be watching! There is so much reference material for this kit, its not even funny. Don't make me challenge you!
lawdog114Absolutely stellar Mike...
Thank you, Joe. I really respect your opinion and I feel pretty honored right now.

I was going to wait for some proper reveal pictures, but once again I'm working and I don't know when I'll get to making a base for those pictures, so what the heck, here ya go.
I used about 95% of the kit parts. The ones I replaced were either too far gone or just plain ol' blah. I really like the mix of resessed and raised details and I will be doing this more often. I'd also like to think that this proves you can still make a good looking model almost entirely OOB.
Also something different I did with this build is the finish. There is almost no weathering on this build. That in combination with the overall solid O.D. paint scheme led me to use my usual modulation technique in a way that was far more subtle than usual. This does make an attractive, although plain, new looking P-40 that is more than just one solid color. I believe this lends it some realism.
This peticular aircraft probably existed, but there are no historic photographs available to prove it. I went with my best guess and a little imagination based one the few pictures available of the 8th PG, 33rd PS based on Mitchell Field NY, 1940. The 8th PG was a training group at the time, so this bird would've been very well taken care of.
So without further ado here are more pictures. [ :)]
She's clean enough to be in Max's museum!
Thank you, my friend!
That is one beautiful P-40. I love what you did with the oil pin wash.

Thanks, Brandon! Making a "new" P-40 is a little harder than I thought it would be. Covering up mistakes when you have custom mixed Colors isn't easy lol. Usually I just cover such things with weathering, because I typically make a lot of mistakes along the way lol.
Much respect for those who build clean birds!!
It looks great. I love the scheme and all the work you did. Excellent finish.

Thanks, guys! I think it turned out well in the end. :)
Stunning!!
Nick.
Yet another great P-40! Nice job!

The coffee mug? LMAO! It came in a gift basket with coco lol. I don't know where it was purchased lol.
Now, one more just because. :D this is my favorite shot so far.
Have a great day my friend!
Great work as always, Sir. I will be trying that painting tech. soon. I all about simple and easy. BTW, where can I get me one of those reindeer coffee mugs?
Sooner Born...Buckeye Bred.
I know what you mean. I too, have built this kit so many times over the years and it is still a favorite. I've still got to build it one more time though. I need to do it in the Brittish markings. :)
Your Warhawk looks great! I like that paint scheme.
The P-40B is probably my favorite warbird, given that I first built this exact kit when I was roughly 3 years old (saw the old Monogram blue box on the shelf at K-Mart, fell in love with the shark teeth artwork, and thus began a life-long hobby). Of course, that first build did not look any where near as good as your's.
Oh, boy! I think I'm done! One last teaser pic before a proper reveal. :D
Feels good to have this much completed!
Oh yes it does! Lol
I can feel the end getting nearer. I just need more motivation.
Looks really good. Doesn't it feel great knowing you are almost there?
Hiya mates! I've got the decals on. No real problems with those except for some minor alignment issues on my part. Testors dullcote to protect them after an oil pin wash for the panel lines. Standard stuff, y'know.
I scratch built the iron sights, probably too soon, with some fine wire and CA. Then sanded and attached them. They look great, but I'll probably regret adding them soon enough because I'm not finished with all of the detailing yet. I need to get the last of the details sorted out and give this thing a good coat of Vallejo matte clear. I've got an idea for a good display base and I'll try to bust that out soon. Thanks for looking.
