1/48 Monogram/Revell (Monovell) P-40B - Completed pg. 6

It would make me quite happy if I inspired you to finish your Revell P-40B! I'd very much like to see that happen.  :)

Confession time, lol.

I've been working on a decompression build instead of this one. 

It's to be revealed much later. So back on topic!  :D

I glued the fuse halves together and stuck the nose on. I removed the location pins and lined it up manually, as I got a better fit that way. 

I've begun scribing panel lines on the nose. This is tricky because they are so long and they waver a bit because of it. I'm doing the best I can! Lol

Once I finish sorting out the nose I'm going to glue on the front windscreen and blend that in. With that out of the way I'll work on the wings. I've found that glueing the lower wings on first allows you to add the upper wing panels afterwards, easily aligning them before you glue.

This old kit has it quirks, but they are so well known that finding easy fixes for them is not difficult.

I also removed the nose gun fairings. They are so rounded out over time that they need to be completely rebuilt. It also makes it far easier to level out the nose between the gun fairings and the carb inlet.

I've worked the exhaust stacks over with the glue-stippling method to compensate for their poor molding. It gives them a rusty texture that hides the flaws that the age of this kit has produced.

Simply stated, the method requires some LC to soften the surface of the plastic and then you stipple it with a stiff brush to get the desired effect.

OK, I'm keepin' an eye on you lol, this is really looking cool!

I spent most of the time painting the stupid dials. I had to keep going over them till I got good results and I think they are now satisfactory.

I just have to work on the exhaust manifolds so I can close up the fuselage. :)

Beautifully added detail.  Let's see her painted up!

I finished the canopy and the left side wall of the cockpit. I think I'm ready for some paint.  :)







I added an electrical junction box, elevator trim, throttle controls, and ran all of the wires and cables. It doesn't look so empty in there anymore. I have to admit, I'm very happy with this.  :D

Some times concessions need to be made out of functionality I realize so if I ever see something small some times I hesitate to speak up (is it always that big a deal kinda thing...). That's an easy fix though for this point and definitely worth addressing. =]

You may have mentioned it already, but who's plane are you building? 

I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this build.

I'm building the 8th PG markings based at Mitchel Field, NY 1942. Just before the 8th PG moved to Australia and became the 8th AF.

I have the new Airfix P-40B as well. It's a wonderful kit and goes together really well. 

Thanks again for pointing out the canopy mistake. Like I said, I totally missed it. :)

But all is well now and it's looking great. I only have the throttle controls to fabricate on the left side wall and I can start painting the pit.

My attemp last night ended up as a glue sandwich once it came out of the clamp lol. It wasn't good enough anyways. No worries.

Mike don't feel bad, most people miss that when they open the canopy of the Revell  P-40. It becomes obvious if you look at a photo of a real aircraft that has an open canopy. You may note that the front piece of that molded on panel on the kit is not part of the sliding canopy. it is actually under the wind screen and acts as a forward stop! I hope the adjustment does not interfere with all that fine work you have done. 

Fixing the office is the hardest part of building the Revell kit. I scratch built mine and then closed the canopy. I have the new Airfix kit in my stash; it comes with an excellent interior, complete with the proper curve in the floor board to represent the wing top.
