1/48 Monogram/Revell (Monovell) P-40B - Completed pg. 6

Beautiful!  I have this one in my stash, but I don't think I could make it look half as nice as you have! 

Well hey there Mike! It's been a loooooong time since I've talked to you but I just had to come see this beauty of a P-40 that you've got goin' on here. I'm trying to make it out of the auto section more these days. Everything about this one looks good: Paint, cals, details.....man! Really hit a home run here!!

It looks great to me Mike. I think the paint job looks very good indeed. I enjoy seeing some classic warbirds without too much weathering applied.

You're kidding, right? Keyda, you have more than demonstrated your talent for this level of work. You COULD do this. We just have to convince you of it more, I guess. But you have shown us you have the talent.

Besides, if you build it, we will be watching! There is so much reference material for this kit, its not even funny. Don't make me challenge you!

Lol. I've been watching your builds in silence, my friend. Thank you! Thank you very much! The kit decals went down without a single issue. Kinda weird for Revell decals lol. Just three more to finish up before i pull out another Revell kit from the stash. Lol

Thank you so much, Mike! The only other kit I built in this manner was my Lindberg Stuka and that turned out pretty well too. 

I may just keep this trend up with these older kits.

You guys are much too kind!  I haven't even ventured into scratch building yet, but one day I will.  My biggest downfall is paitence, lol.  But if I set my mind on something I usually can pull it off. 

Excellent, excellent finish of this kit, Mike.  It is perfect weathering as these were brand new in 1940 straight out of the Curtiss factory.  You are the one who inspired me to get this kit, and to also get two P-36's to do. One is the original AMT kit which will be done as an 18th PS plane in May 1942 with OD, red and white tail stripes, and red dot stars as depicted in Dana Bell's Air Force Colors, volume 1.  The second one is an Academy PH version done as one of the planes flown off the USS Enterprise in February 1941 for Hawaii.  Thanks Mike

Scratch building always starts off small, with just making some random part look better or adding a missing detail. Soon enough you're replicating things from photos. It can sometimes escalate kinda quickly lol. We've seen how focussed you can get and you always finish a project. Im sure when you're ready you'll have no problems taking off with it lol.

Mike, you did a great job on your P-40. Thanks for allowing us on the journey with you. The P-40 4-BP is one of my favorites and is thought to be 39-160, the 5th produced. After your build, I went to Michael's and spent $9.86 on another Revell P-40.

 

Seriously? The 5th produced? I couldn't find any information on this exact plane. 

So did I get it right? When they started putting the stars on the fuselage they stopped adding the tail stripes, but the instructions place the stars on the fuse in 1940 before they removed the tail stripes. I made a guess and combined them. Visually I really like it, but it is probably historically incorrect.

Hmmmm... Perhaps I should contact Revell about a commission check, since I seem to be improving their sales of P-40 kits so recently lol.

That means the British markings are the most accurate in this kit. The tail number is off by one digit, but at least there are pictures of it online.

You can finally take a deep breath on a well done historical subject with a build that is out of this world.  I wish my builds could only come out as half as good!  This is just excellent.  congratulations on another great build!

Wow, Mike, what a beautiful job you did on this kit and what a great WIP. Sure wish I'd have been following along to comment along the way.

I just spent 40 mins over coffee reviewing this. So many interesting things, the scratched cockpit, that amazing funcitional canopy, the cat-chase accident-not to mention your recovery/repair, it just goes on and on in this WIP.

And you even posted an explanation of your modulation technique which I was wanting to ask about anyway, and made it sound easy enough to try.

I don't know what to say, my friend. Your work is in a class all of its own. Because it's you who does the work. There is not one person who puts as much love and fun into his builds as you do. Not even I. Apples and oranges, my friend. There is no comparison.

That's why your threads typically get over a million hits in under three months. I rate half as much. YOU are the fan favorite! :D

So don't compare yourself to the rest of us. Not many of us can get the attention you get so easily. Be confident in your abilities and keep loving what you're doing! Oh, and don't forget to try new ideas once in a while. Keep that mind active!!  ;)

This build started off like a shot for me, Greg. It just didn't get put down for very long until that accident and then I lost interest. I forced myself to pick it back up and carry on, and I'm glad I did. I've wanted to put some serious effort into this kit for years and I made it! I finished it! Now I'm almost afraid to touch it lol.

I'm so happy that all of you guys like it too. I did put a lot of effort into making it more than average and I'm quite proud of this one.

I still wouln't take it to an event, but I will enjoy it in my collection!  :)

That modulation technique is easy to use and it doesn't take much to master it. I like that it doesn't require color changes, pre or post shading, or immaculate precision to make it work. Just a base color, lighten it, and go again. The more you do it the more faded the paint looks. Then all you do is paint a few panels in a lighter or darker shade to make them stand out a little bit. 

It's easy and I know it will serve you well. :)

Your p-40 Looks great. I also built this kit as a kid back in the mid 70s and have in my stash.

Ahhhh the power of coco-mug gift giving lol! It's a good mug. The coco was okay lol.

Y'know, I'm starting to wonder who doesn't have this kit in their stash and if we should just have an exclusive Monovell P-40 build-off? Lol. I still need to build that one, last scheme.  ;)

Sorry about the mug joke....it's seems to have taken on a life of it's own. I don't even use a mug for anything. The P-40 turned out awesome! Really enjoy watching your builds. Going to try and use your ideas to "fix" my Spits canopy. It has been on the stand for a month saying "FINISH ME"!!!

Is it the Revell spitfire Mk II? Because that canopy (windscreen) fits horribly. I documented the fix for that in my Revell spitfire build. 

Adding some styrene strips the the bottom of the sliding part makes it functional and the windscreen needs lots of attention to get in (literally) back in shape.
