Tamiya P-47D Thunderbolt "Razorback" 1/48
Posted by Aggieman on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 7:01 PM

Another Tamiya Jug.  This was their first kit of the Thunderbolt.  I'm hoping they will kit this thing in 1/32 - it is among the best kits I have ever built.

There is not much difference between this kit and the bubbletop, other than obvious areas like the canopy.  Many of the part numbers are the same, although there are a few that have different numbers or locations on the sprues.  That actually made keeping track of everything a bit trying at times.

Paint is Model Master with Tamiya weathering compound and Flory wash.  After-market decals.  This is the middle bird of the Checkerboard Clan, representing the ride of Lt. Donald Kearns of the 319th Fighter Squadron in Italy, 1944.

Build Photos

I started these builds on January 21 this year and finished today, so 2 months to get these five done.  Now I am exhausted and am taking some time away from the bench.

Another nice one.  I understand the bench fatigue, I have completed 9 in the last five months including the latest, the Tamiya 1/48 Lancaster.  I haven't done much bench time in the last week or so but have two more underway, an XP-59A and an A-7A.  It's been a lot of fun, too.

Gorgeous work! Agreed....perhaps the best model ever kitted in plastic. .

Thanks John.  I think the fatigue comes mostly from my habit of not being able to just build a single kit at a time.  Too many sprues at a time on the bench has a bit of a negative effect on me, or so it seems.  And I only took off a few days between the last build of last year, an old Monogram F-86, and these builds.

Thanks Lawdog!

I am looking at Tamiya's F4U series as giving their P-47 series a run for their money.

Beautiful weary Razorback! Also really liked the Bubble top you posted. I'll second the motion for a 1/32nd RB by Tamiya.

Very, very nice work. One of my favorite kits - the cockpit and engine are jewels, little sub-kits of their own.

Thanks for everyone's kind responses!

I truly believe this to be one of the very best kits ever produced, and I think I did a decent job on it.

@Aggieman

Hello there! I see you've stated that you used Model Master paints. However, what EXACT model master paints did you use?

I was about to have to tell you that I'd slept a bunch since this build, but fortunately, I was writing a build log and actually recorded the paints that I used on this 'Bolt.

For the primary exterior paint job -- Model Master Acryl Neutral Gray, Acryl Olive Drab, and Enamel Faded Olive Drab.  The tail was Model Master Acryl Insignia Yellow.  The nose cone was Model Master Acryl Insignia Red.  Wheel wells are Model Master Acryl Yellow Zinc Chromate, and the cockpit was Model Master Acryl Green Zinc Chromate.  I also used Model Master Acryl Chrome Silver, Acryl Clear Blue, and Acryl Clear Red for detail painting.

Nice build I have that kit waiting in the wings and I hope I can make it look as good as yours. One of my favorite aircraft.

I like the subtle weathering on it. Nicely put together. Any pics of the cockpit you can share?

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

Great work on a great airplane. The drop tanks make it look more massive that it was. Nice paint work.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Aggieman, thanks for the info on the Model Master paints.  Beautiful build!

Aggieman,

Another cracker. I agree that the P-47 kits are among the best ever produced in 1/48, but I’d also like to submit the latest A6M5 into the mix as well. The big advantage for the Jug is the slip molded blast tubes though...

Have the MM Acryl paints changed in the last few years? I had the full RLM line, and I found the paints to be difficult to mix fully, and tip drying was a real problem when airbrushing.

Anyway, great work and thanks for sharing. Now get some rest!

I've never really noticed any problems with the Acryl paints with regard to mixing, but admittedly I have not often felt the need to mix them.  Tip drying, yes, still an issue.

I've actually moved on from this line despite having a full drawer of these bottles.  Now I use more Vallejo paint than anything else.

I just noticed this was a zombie thread. I use a lot of Tamiya paints, and Mission Models (love these!), but I wanted to clarify my comment about mixing... I should have said stirring, the paints I had settled a lot and it was difficult to get them properly blended. Then again, I can’t verify the age of the paints when I received them...

Anyway, enough yapping.
