Thanks Mustang, I'm not either but in this case Airfix didn't leave me much choice. The IP was a flat piece of plastic.

Thanks for following along.

That's a bummer about the flat piece of plastic. I hear you about the no choice in the matter though. Build on brutha...............Yes

well you can take a piece of thin sheet plastic, drill it and cut it to match shape and location of instruments, paint it up, then install over the decal...

I might have to try that on the Hasegawa kit.

Really nice work Steve,

Your interior work looks great - on top of what seems to be a very nicely detailed kit.

Thanks Chris,

I worked on the seams tonight, painted some grey to check for smoothness and sanded a little more. I then went over the panel lines to remove the Mr Disolved Putty and I think that should do it.
Tomorrow night I'm spraying silver for a base for some chipping. Japanese aircraft weren't as worn out and chipped as they were at the end of the war but there was some. I also sanded and smoothed the torpedo. I'm not going with the Type 91 modification 2 Torpedo which was used at Pearl (adding the wooden fins) because I'm building this as a May 1942 time frame. The kit is awesome enough to include the wood fins for the Mod 2 torp, but doesn't seem to include instructions to add the modification to the kits torpedo.

This is coming along nicely there, Steve. I may have to think about adding one to the stash.

Yes but no installation instructions I can find LOL. Although I have to admit I typically scan instruction sheet and don't really read them. Its a process carried over from my childhood when I built kits before I could read. Just looked at the pictures and matched the shapes. I get a shot of the fins tonight.

Mike as promised a pic of the wood fins for the mod 2 torp. They are attached to the end cap of the torpedo and the builder gets to decide which cap they use. I found the problem with the instructions. Step 46 and 47 show question marks but also show the same fins. An intermediate modeler can figure it out though.

I sprayed the silver on the kit and will start with the base coat tomorrow.

Looking good!

The P-40B comes with the camera gear, but also has no instructions. I still think its awesome that they included it. With basic troubleshooting skills, one could figure out how it goes together.

What other P-40B kit comes with the photo recon gear??

Yeah, it's no problem to figure out. The kit is awesome. The ordnance variations and choices are great. It even comes with the Type 99 #80 Mk 5 High-Altitude armor piercing bomb that was dropped by a Kate that sink the Arizona.
That's a 1641lb 15.7" battleship shell that could penetrate 5.9" of armor.

I had read that it was a Soryu aircraft that dropped the bomb on Arizona that sank her. IIRC from one of my Pearl Harbor books, possibly "At Dawn We Slept"....

That matches with my recollection as well regarding the Soryu Kate sinking the Arizona ... but then again I'm less than a month out from 5-0 and my memory sometimes is not what it used to be.Wink

LOL! Well I'm about two years ahead of you. And most of the time my memory works as it should... just seems to get more and more stuff in there to fill it on a daily basis...

I added the Type 99 #80 Mk 5 High-Altitude armor piercing bomb in the picture to see its size. I was going to strap it to my Akagi Kate when I build that next, but since that's for the Midway GB It wouldn't fit. Besides I don’t know if the Agagi's Kates had bombs or torpedoes. I'm thinking torpedoes.
I'm heading down the final stretch. I sprayed the black nose then the overall grey base coat. The upper surfaces have green squiggles and blotches which I hope to get to tonight.

You are doing a wonderful job of convincing me I need this kit in my collection lol.

It looks amazing, and I've built the Hasegawa kit before. :D

Now it's time for a wash then a dull coat. The open canopy is molded together so is somewhat interesting to paint. I'll install the wings after the canopy is attached.

Tigerman, since I used a chipping fluid over the silver, I used Silly Putty because tape would have removed more paint than I wanted

Thanks mate.
I completed the Kate. This was a very fun kit and I highly recommend it. The decals were a little thick. And I would have preferred to stack the canopy in whichever position I wished but the plastic is probably too thick to do that. The kit does provide for three different canopy options and the armament options are also outstanding. The detail is outstanding for a 1/72 although some belts would benefit the interior.
All in all, there were very few cons to this kit IMO.
