Hello Mike!

Nice work so far. This kit sure is a challenge, good think that the parts fit together. It's a pity that you got no clear parts for this baby, but in this scale maybe you should consider forming your own? I mean crafting a wooden shape and then pulling heated transparent sheet over it? This trick with those frames - I've got my doubts here, whereas I know that you can practically form your own parts. I did that work on this baby here:

I had to do both of those clear parts from scratch, as the original ones were unusable.

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Hey, Pawel!  :D

I've never heat formed anything like a canopy and I'm not sure what to do. This frame method should get me the results I'm looking for, even if they are tedious and somewhat complicated to shape. So far, so good.

I think this will work. Just the center section to build up now.

You love this scratch building stuff! I think this kit will keep you out of trouble for a while. Looks great so far. D

Hello Mike!

Well I say you should give it a try, it opens wholly new possibilities to a modeller.

Please be careful about those frames, they look way too thick for me.

Then again the shape you're going for looks rather easy, and if you like, you could try something like that:

- Carve a shape that would the canopy out of wood. Smooth it, cover it in a layer of CA, sand smooth again and then cover with liquid soap - works great as mold release agent.

- Put your carving on a holder, so that you can have it a few inches above the working surface. For example you could glue it to a popsicle stick that could be held in a vise - this or a similar arrangment.

-Take a piece of clear sheet a few inches larger than the canopy itself - for your canopy a strip like two inches wide and five inches long would do just great. hold it by the ends with both hands

- heat the middle of the strip until it gets visibly soft - but don't let it melt through

- while soft pull the hot spot over the ooden carving. The plastic will wrap itself around the carving, let it cool down

-after the plastic is hard again, cut the canopy to shape. From there on you work with your new part like with any other.

That's how the process looks like. With some practice it's easier than what you are doing at the moment. Gives cleaner results, too! Good luck with your build and have a nice day

That does sound easier than what I'm currently doing. I know the frames look thick, but that's on purpose until I get the glue hardened enough to further shape them. I'd rather have them too big for now then too small. I don't want to have to do this twice lol.

If this doesn't work out, Pawel, then I'll definitely try your method.

I've refined the rear frames and they're ready for covering. The front windscreen still needs more work and the center section is tacked together and on hold for further thinning of the windscreen so that I get a good fit.

I think I'm going to take a break for a while. ;)

I love the Mig 3, I think it is a spectacular looking AC. You've taking a big bite with this one but it looks like you will make it work. Can't wait to see the result.

Yeah, I have taken a big bite alright. I've got the center canopy frame built up and I'll sand it to shape later. I've also got the rest of the plane sanded and ready for paint. Just need to finish this canopy and attach some acetate.

It's late (or early) and I think I'm done whittling on these canopy frames. They're still a little overly thick, but for this kit I think they'll do fine.

Now I just have to find some suitable acetate to work with. :)

Oh ya, that looks the part. Far more work than the kit probably deserves but it looks great.

Yeah it's more work than this kit deserves, but that did keep me busy for a while. Micro engineering is challenging lol.

Almost wish I'd tossed some more details in that pit lol. The pilot will fill the space however, so I'm not going to fret over it.

I had one last thing to do before primer and that was to make my patterns for the acetate.

The simple solution;

I can also use this tape for masking later. :)

Looking good.  Your scratch building continues to amaze me.  Nice save from what probably would have caused me to chuck it in the spare parts bin.

I entertained the idea of saving it for spares for maybe a minute. Then I thought I'd just put it together for fun. Now its probably going to be in my tiny museum lol.

Since I have no russian A/C in there this will be a welcome addition.  :)

And finally, the first bit of color. I mixed Sky Blue with White over black primer and I only faded it just a pinch to get some subtle shading. Nothing too fancy, just enough to break up the monotony of the overall color.

I probably should've done the pit first lol.

Well... two out of three so far.

I couldn't find my thin acetate and I had to substutute for thicker stuff. This caused a problem with the rear window and I had to sand it. Its now a bit foggy because I couldn't polish it well enough due to the type of acetate it is. (Sigh) so moving forward I am just going to live with it.

Do to my heavy handedness while sanding I managed to rub off my paint at the trailing edge of the wings, plus I forgot to mask the landing light. So it looks like a repaint is in order..  :/

Once I get the last canopy piece completed I'll finish the pit, paint the pilot, and reprimer for a second time. I should've done this right the first time.

Just goes to show how unpredictable this hobby can be when you scratch build. I'm sure I'll recover like i usually do, but I don't think I'll ever get used to these unexpected setbacks.

Ditto  As for unexpected setbacks, they can happen with a straight kit build, and I would imagine scratch building just ups the chances of that happening.  That said, I feel your frustration.  But....pulling off a scratched canopy is something few could say they have done, and many would say they wouldn't even try (like me Big Smile).

Your builds are always fascinating, so thanks for sharing.

Well next time I'm going to try Pawel's suggestion. That rear window was trouble.

Thanks D. As I'm finding out, there was a better way to do this lol. The center section is done and I began painting the pit and the pilot. Shame about the paint getting rubbed off but it just means I'll have to do better.
