Thats good to know that i won't need to worry about being to precise. I have a good selection of Alclad Aluminiums as well as the other colours, so i should be able to get a good mix.

I am hoping to get that area primed and the first on by the weekend as the Mrs and i are off to Italy on Monday, so it will be ready to do the rest when we get back.

The F-4's were also nicknamed by their pilots Old Smokey for that reason.

From the videos I've seen, the Spey engined UK Phantoms don't seem to be as smoky as their J-79 engined cousins. That might be a consideration as to how sooty you make the tail area.

Yes that could be a possibility with the Brit engine although I have seen some very nasty and dirty Brit F-4s too. I think moderation is key here, used but not abused. For that reason my US Navy Phantoms have light staining.

Just a quick update. Got the construction finished minus the wing tips which i am putting in the folded position so have left off while i get the final bit done and everything else will be painted before fitting.

I wanted to get the rear bare metal areas painted first. So after getting the suggestions from PJ, i primed the rear and then added a couple of thin coats of Alaclad Aluminium.

And that will be it for now. The better half and i and off to Italy on Mon, visiting the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum and climbing Vesuvius. So i'll be able to mask and finish off the bare metal next weekend and then geting to the scheme.

Looking good Bish. I also shoot the NMF areas first to get a smooth finish and tape things up after curing.

Thanks PJ. It seemed the logical choice and will be easier to mask that off than mask off the rest later.

Unfortunately, we've been seeing that little tag on a lot of kits here in the USA for years now. Boeing has to get their share of the money, too. Which, I guess, is only fair, as it is their copyrighted, proprietary designs that are being copied for use my the modeling comanies. So far, and I know I'm probably wrong about this, I've only seen Boeing licensing stickers on models. I can't recall seeing any other companys' sticker on a kit. Anybody else ever see another company's licensing sticker on a kit?

You ever wonder if the manufacturers that supplied all these parts that Boeing slapped together to make this aircraft get a cut of those royalties?

Gary

Nope, not ever. Too many things in this world to worry about, so I go by Matthew 4:34 - (paraphrased by me) "Don't worry about anything - it won't add one minute to your life".

After a week away it was good to get back to the Phantom. The week has been spent masking painting and repeat. So its almost ready for decals. First was to finish off the bare metal areas.

Once masked the white undrsides were painted and then the top. I also added some lighter patches to the top to try and replicate the look i have seen in photo's.

As i unmasked i noticed i have a few areas to touch up as well as the black nose, so will be a few more days before i can add the decals.

Also got the tractor put together.

Then painted and decaled. The pics don't really show the proper yellow, think i need to work on my camera settings.

Thats all for now.

This one will look good I'm sure!  I've really been on the fence with this one. On one hand, I dont build many modern aircraft.  On the other hand, the box art is too nice to ignore!  I might have to add this on to my stash.

Thanks Chad. I don't build many modern subjects either. I do have a small stash of modern US aircraft but the last few years i have been getting more patriotic and felt the need to add some British subjects. I just felt the desire to add some classic British aircraft, i am now awaiting the next incarnation of the British Phantom, the FGR.2 due next month.

Really dig the little tractor.  I just bought the tamiya 1/48 japanese bulldozer and I'm looking to build a vignette around that.  Looking good Bish

Thanks,

Thanks John. There a couple of companies that have a nice selection of support vehicles for aircraft. Would just be nice if we had some figures to go with them.

No pics but just a quick update before i totally lose track of this thread. I started adding the decals last Mon night. As of tonight (Fri) i have completed the upper wings, upper and right side of the fuselage. I've just started on the left side and have not touched the underside yet. So far about 10 hours spent on the decals.

I think i might take a break tomorrow night and finish off painting the tractor before i forget how to use a paint brush.

The first Academy F4 I did had 300+ decals and stencils. It took me several evenings to complete the decaling stage.

This one has just over 250 once you take out the markings for the 2 other options. I thought the Canberra i did last year was bad. I'll be glad to get back to a WW2 build after this.

So, 7 evenings and 250+ decals later, its done.

Now got a little bit of detail painting to do and some light weathering. Not sure what to do on that, especially the white underside. Any ideas?
