Eduard 1/48 Fw-190 A4 / COMPLETED
Posted by MrStecks on Thursday, February 7, 2019 4:26 PM

Woo Hoo!  I finally finished my build of Eduard’s 1/48 Fw 190-A4, so it’s time to post some pictures.

I want to thank everyone that helped me with suggestions in my other thread last month about how to do the winter camo.  I mixed a lot of different paints and mediums, with both the airbrush and paint brushes, and came out the other end with something that I am happy with.
It could certainly be better, but I think it passes for a first attempt.  I really enjoyed the challenge though, and I see more winter camo Luftwaffe planes in my future.

Here’s one of the test pieces that I tried whitewash ideas on:

After laying down a very basic summer camo scheme (since it was getting covered), I laid down some XF-2 Flat White and overcoated some areas with a paint brush some Mig’s Winter Camo White, and also some white oil paints.  I liked the addition of the streaking from the brush strokes.

I tried sanding back some areas to reveal the summer camo below, but struggled with it, so I overcoated some green and gray blotches with the airbrush later.

Here are the final pics:

As for the kit…  it’s fantastic.  Fit was excellent.  If you missed my thread about a month ago, Here’s a link to a short video I did during the build, showing the wing-fuselage fit of this kit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C93_Z5zJV6s

Maybe the only fault I have with the kit is that it doesn’t have weighted wheels, but that's a very minor complaint.  One problem area (for my fumbling hands) were the guns.  After installing the wing-root cannons and gluing the wings to the fuselage, I looked at those gun barrels and silently predicted I would break them off long before finishing the build.  Yep, it happened.  Luckily the kit had some unused barrels on the sprue for another variant, so I trimmed them to the right length and glued them in at the end.  I think it works.  Smile

If anyone has any questions about any aspects of the build, please let me know.  I would've shown more pictures, but didn't want to make this already-long post even longer.

Cheers,
Mark

PS. In typical fashion (for me), after posting these pics and randomly selecting one to make sure the links to the full size pictures worked, I noticed I completely forgot to apply ANY weathering to the inside of the clamshell gear doors.  D'OH!  Guess it's back to the bench for this bird!  hahahahaha......

Very nice result, Mr Stecks!

I have a version of the Eduard kit and have read that if the wing spar and other fuse parts are not fitted exactly, the engine will not line up right.  Did you have any issues around the engine?  Did you put all the engine and wing cannon parts in per the instructions and get a good fit?

Thanks Ken.  I did have trouble with an older Eduard Fw190 kit (the A9) with all the things you mention.  The whole nose section ended up slightly tilted upward at the front.
However, this new kit (the A4) was engineered differently, and everything went together beautifully.  This kit only has the front face of the engine, so maybe it would have been different if I tried to put in a complete after-market engine.  The fit everywhere was very good.

Cheers,
Mark

I like the whole package but the part I think is really exceptional is the exhaust staining on the white background! I gotta believe it would be easy to overdo that and yours looks realistic.

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

I second that !

Nice job !

My only question is about the Yellow bit's. They seem to be to "Shiny". ( It may just be an optical illusion on my part)  The White may be making the Yellow stand out a bit.

Wow you nailed it. Looks like it's a somewhat recently winter camo application. Not to beat up but used.

Thanks Mongoose.  I airbrushed flat black just in the area directly behind the stacks, then applied black pastel chalk dust to do the main streaking.  I use a short, stiff brush for this, but I build it up very slowly to keep from overdoing it.  I use the same brushed-chalk technique to do the gun exhaust streaking on the wings.

Thanks Timmy.  Yeah, I applied some weathering to the yellow panels and fuselage stripe, but perhaps not enough.  They do stand out a little as looking "fresher" than the rest of the plane.

Thanks keavdog.  I needed a "win" after struggling through that tiny C-47 build.  Smile

Thanks 7474.  It's funny, I never cared much for the look of the 190 until just recently.  After building two of them I've really come to appreciate the beautiful clean lines of the design.

Outstanding Mark! =] Very well done. Quite an accomplished looking winter camo. Glad I caught it. I don't get to drop in here as often as I'd like.

Two thumbs.

One thing about the weighted wheels...I do like a lot of others and sand the bottoms slightly. It doesn't quite produce the bulge in width like you'd see, but at 1:48...you're not seeing it that much anyhow. Tires on a plane like a 190 are unfamiliar to me, but I don't imagine a tire like that bowed much. Less is probably more here for future reference.

Again, sweet build here!!

Thanks bvallot.  This A4 is now sitting next to the A9 I did last year, on my display table.  One has weighted wheels and one doesn't, and it's impossible to see the difference unless you really get close up. Big Smile

But I may try the sanding idea on the next set of unweighted wheels I come across.  Yes

Cheers,
Mark

Hey Mark,

If I ever do a winter camo and it turns out half as nice as yours, I'll be thrilled. You did really well. YesYes

Was this your first Eduard 190? (It sure doesn't look like it)

Thanks Greg.  This is my second Eduard 190.  The first was an A9 last year, which was an older tool, and was a difficult build to put it lightly.  This newly-tooled (2017) A4 went together beautifully.  I highly recommend this kit.

Cheers,
Mark

This is an exceptional build! I’ve been modeling for years and years, and this is the best example of soot trails I’ve seen. I never considered using black pastel chalk dust. Well done!

Awesome work! That winter camp turned out perfect! I’ll be dragging out the new Eduard 190 soon.

That's a super looking winter camouflage on your 190...I love Luftwaffe aircraft, but I;m still yet to attempt a winter camo scheme. Nice one!
