1/48 Tamiya Me 262 A-1a "Schreiber White 4" (FINISHED)
Posted by lawdog114 on Friday, May 24, 2019 3:48 AM

After three challenging builds (Lancaster, two Devastators) I decided I needed to do something easy.  I call these therapy builds.  I recently acquired the new AK Real Colors Late War Luftwaffe set and I'm dying to give them a full go. So Luftwaffe it is.  One subject I've always wanted to do was the Me 262.  I've had Tamiya's A-1a in my stash for years.  I opened the box to find that I had a color Eduard PE set tucked in there.  What a nice surprise.  Swallow it is.........

All my research so far says this is nice kit, that being typical late nineties Tamiya.  That's what I'm looking for.  There are complaints about slats and flaps being fixed closed, but I don't particularly care about that nor am I willing to do surgery to change it.  Easy build remember?

I started with the pit.  It's a dandy out of the box.  I used XF-24 Dark Grey with a touch of XF-19 Sky Grey for my RLM 66. I used the PE seatbelts and Instrument panel. I added some wire to the back of the dials, but I'm not sure if it will be seen.  I was apparently supposed to paint these wires yellow, but I forgot.  I still might, It's not too late.  I originally had the fuselage sides painted RLM 66 too before I realized it was supposed to be silver in there. I should read the instructions more.

This is one of Eduard's better instrument panels.

I had the airframe together in no time.  The nose comes with a weight integrated into the front landing gear, like their He 219 kit.  Very nice indeed.  The only problem is you have to install the front landing gear.  It took me all of ten minutes to break the retraction arm, but the gear itself is strudy.  That aside, the overall fit is great, particularly the engine nacelles.  Tamiya did a great job here. The wing roots are snug too.  Here's a test fit of without glue.

One annoyance, like their P-51 belly, is the design of the centerline hatches/doors that get bisected by the fuselage halves. In this case it's the small oval doors in front of the windscreen.  I believe they are fuel doors.  They're too small to tape off (which I tried) and I always end up sanding out the detail. Perhaps it's my inferior modeling skills but I have a bear of a time scribing back in circles.  I'll probably replace them with very thin sheet styrene like I did on my Lancaster then use washes and such to make then appear recessed. At least they'll be there.....

You have the choice to open the gun bay to expose those Mk 108s, which are quite nice.  I however like my models closed up, so I omitted the guns with the hope that the hatch would fit better without them.  Wrong, I needed some putty to fill a few gaps. Nothing major though.

I painted the engine ennerds and added them.  Perfect fit.

Main gear bay detail is awesome.  I used AK Duralumunim in there with a detailer wash.

I got here in one night of work.  I'll be ready for paint in no time. Now If I could only decide on a particular scheme.  I want to do something other than Novotny, Barr, or Galland.  It's a toss up between Alfred Schreiber and Walter Schuck...... I think. I'm leaning towards Schreiber's "White 4".   He was credited with the first kill in the 262, a recon Mossie.

This is a great kit, I built it 5-6 years ago the only fit issue I had was also with the nose gunbay. Have you thought about getting a scribing template for circles and ovals? You can get them cheap and it really helps me when rescribing doors like them.

I too have the Alliance templates, they are awesome. I got them for this exact reason, losing the detail on those small access doors.

The kit looks great, Joe. I think this is the one I have also, I'd have to look. I'm glad to see that it goes together with little fuss. We all need a breather from the more challanging kits once in a while. I can't wait to see your scheme, it'll be cool I'm sure.

Thanks Brandon. There’s this one and the A-2, which is the bomber version. That one comes with a tractor.  Indeed we do need a breather sometimes. I have to do another AM B-25 soon.

Hi, Joe - The 262 work is looking really good, should be a real beauty when finished. Your building speed is remarkable, I can take more time to finish dinner.

If you don't come up with a template you like, I see them with great variety at the UofO bookstore, the engineering and architechture school students use them in a major way. Let me know if you want me to have a look at their supply, I have a good idea of what would work.

Looking fantastic Joe! Really looking forward to see your scheme on this one. Other than the gunbay cover and those tiny wing lights it’s a fantastic kit.

Thanks Tanker. I knew of the clear B-17, but not the 262. That sounds like was an interesting project.

I've been wanting to build a 262 ever since I viewed Plastic Junkie's (Ernie ) at Modelpolusa in Orlando. Thank you for posting this vicarious build for me lol I've got "Hot Tools " scribing templates I purchased from UMM. They are thin brass similar to PE , have several shapes and they're always in reach on my bench, handy little suckers for rescribing lost details for sure.

I'm always in for your Works In Progress. You, Joe, are the master of the office!

Of the one or two links I have in my bookmarks that pertain to building and finishing cockpits and IP's, this is the one I always refer to first:

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/156030.aspx

P.S. I sure wish FineScale would fix the hotlink issue.

I've had little modeling time lately, work......sleep......more work...yard work.....well that's life I suppose.  In the meantime I have been plugging away at this turkey here and there.  Let's see, I got the frame together.  I had no issues.  I did cheat and use plasticard for the fuel doors.  Although raised, I think they will look fine once washed and weathered a bit. I may get that scribing template suggested for future projects.

At this stage, I masked the glass canopies and added them.  I found the windscreen to be a tad undersized and I used some putty to fill the gaps.  Nothing too serious.

I added the small circle door on the spine too.

Next I dusted the seams with Alclad Grey Primer.  I generally only prime to check my seamwork.  The only time I prime the whole thing is for a NMF finish. I like to keep the paint in the panel lines to a minimum.

When satisfied with my seamwork, I preshaded the panel lines.  I decided on Alfred Schreiber's "White 4" from late 1944.  I chose this subject because (A) I had Montex masks for it and (B) I needed one with the RLM 74/75 over 76 scheme.  More on that in a bit.  I sprayed the necessary colors then masked them off thusly (later I added the yellow fuselage band which I initially forgot).

I added a touch of XF-19 Sky Grey to the XF-2 Flat White to tone the brightness down just a bit.

Remember how I said I needed the 74/75 over 76 scheme?  Here's why.  I've been dying to try out the new AK Interactive Real Colors Luftwaffe set.  I've been on the never ending quest to find the perfect RLM colors, at least to my eye.  I've tried mixing Tamiya (yuck), Gunze (not bad), MRP (too translucent and can't stand the gloss), and then Mission Models. MM has probably been the best so far regarding colors, but I can't stand the poster paint consistency.  Then I heard about AK Real Colors, which were reportedly taken from real paint samples.  I read they were a hybrid lacquer acrylic that could be mixed with other acrylics.  A few You Tube videos seemed to confirm this.  Well, here is my take on them.

I started with the RLM 76 early version, which was more grey.  I found the late version too blue, more akin to RLM 65.  I added a few drops of their "High Compatibility" thinner designed for these (maybe a 70/30 ratio) and off I went.  It sprayed beautifully with great coverage and no orange peel.  We are happy so far.

Next I fired down their RLM 75.  Again beautiful.  We are still happy.

I taped off the splinter pattern and fired down their RLM 74.  Outstanding!  Also, before I forget, I did some fading of both 74 and 75 with Tamiya paints and had no trouble.

I did some minor postshading with alcohol diluted XF-69 NATO Black and XF-64 Red Brown mixture.  I was going for good condition but used.

I kept the underside weathering minimal as well.

Conclusion?  I think I've found my new go-to for RLM paints.  These colors are perfect to my eye. You bet I wil be trying their other sets too, particularly the Olive Drab.......
