Me too!! What's up about a new 1/48 B-17?

Ever elusive, meaning we desperately want one, but companies keep making new Bf 109s instead.  My point was that we desperately wanted a new P-38 and we finally got one.  Maybe someone will tackle the ole 17 eventually.

HK Models' 1/48 B-17G is already out  and should be available via the usual suspects. I admit I also only was aware of their 1/32 stuff, until I recently saw a shop listing and thought, wow, that's pretty cheap for a 1/32 four-engined bomber :D

Sorry for the double post. (My actual post is below...) After registering, I was told by the automated system that my first post would require to be approved by whatever staff there is on this site, and that it would take 24 hours.

After 24 hours had passed and nothing had happened, I guessed that something with my registration might have gone awry, so I tried it again. Again no luck. Oh well. Funny thing is, both posts, although some 24 hours apart, were acknowledged at the same time, not with a 24 hour interval.

Anyway, unlike I say in my post, the B-17 model isn't out yet, but due to be released this month. It is, however, available for pre-order already. And if it is so far along its way already, I wonder why everybody seemed to be oblivious to it as shortly as two months ago.

I think rather that we will see asking prices at or above the MSRP for the kit, until the initial demand dies down. I have seen that in similar situations. People will buy the kit and flip it, first. The lower prices will come as people buy it, then have to get rid of it for whatever reason. And the more motivated someone is to unload it, the more likely he'll offer it for a bargain price.

Agree........That's why I ordered two Wink.  In regards o demand, this thing is probably up there with the ever elusive new tooled 1/48 B-17 we desperately want.  The white box version is pushing $150 on ebay right  now. Personally, I'd rather wait a few weeks than pay almost triple the MSRP.

If this kit is as good as Tamiya's 1/48 Spitfire MK I and other recent kits I'll spend the $80.00. My reasoning not to pre-order this kit and buy the 1/48 Spitfire MK I is I still haven't built my 1/48 Tamiya Me109E3 ( I bought with my deceased Grandfather USAAF WWII/model buddy my whole life) or 1/48 Hasagawa P-40E ( favorite WWII fighter). I have pretty much everything I need just don't have the work space.... working on that. You guys keep me in the game !!

That’s definitely better than $80. I imagine you’ll eventually be able to find it a little cheaper on eBay.

It's certainly possible that someone will sell it cheaper on eBay, or elsewhere on the second-hand market.  But I think it's highly unlikely for at least a year after release.

I'd love to see you guys build one.

I'm going to wait for a J/L model, most of the decals I have for P-38s are for those.

This looks to be a really good kit. The review goes on and on about the fit and how everything locks into place.  May have to pick one up.

Gamera

Well it's listed today on HobbyLink Japan's site for pre-order arriving in October. List price of $47.33 US at the current exchange rate- not bad considering.

And they all laughed at me when I said it Wink

Thanks for the heads-up, Gamera!  I placed my order, threw in some MaK stuff, too.

That's too bad regarding the tires being molded in two parts. That seam will be difficult to sand due to the diamond tread pattern. However, Eduards probably has a nice resin tire with straight treads. The review is incorrect regarding the canopy. The HobbyBoss P-38 provides the option for either an open or closed canopy. The closed canopy is made in a single molding. In fact, it fits the fuselage so perfectly that glue is not required to keep it in place.

It will be interseting to watch how the kit goes together at https://www.facebook.com/Ninetalis. As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of parts that make up the fuselage, wings and pods.

Better build my Hasegawa p-38 while I still can before this comes out. :) Luckymodel.com from Hong Kong has it listed for $50.99 USD, their prices for Tamiya kits are usually 15-20% cheaper than US retailers, but you have to add in higher shipping $12.+ in this case, so $63.44 from them airmailed.

Yeah, Luckymodel's price is about in-line with the prices HLJ lists other Tamiya twin-engine kits, perhaps a little lower than some of those prices.  I take surface shipping when I buy my kits from HLJ, because I don't need it right away.

I shall build about 20 or 30 of these. In my opinion however, they are doing themselves a disservice if they charge $80.00 for this kit. I suspect it would impact sales a bit. Then again, anyone who has built the others knows it's much needed, so they may know what they're doing. I still cringe at the thought of another Hasegawa P-38.

It's $68.00 on Mega Hobby Preorder plus shipping, they're saying 4th Quarter/November this year. They're saying retail is $80.00.

Aggieman

Got a newsletter yesterday from Kitlinx where they are estimating a $70 MSRP for this "large" kit.  Seems a bit high, although in looking at their actual web site, I see an estimated price of $55.99.  That's probably more reasonable.

I'd think the P-38 would compare relatively equally to such other Tamiya kits as their Beaufighter, Mosquito, and He219, which go between $35 and $46 on the Kitlinx site.  The Betty bomber is a bigger aircraft and lists for $67.

I'm waiting to see if and when HobbyLink Japan might offer it.  It's through HLJ that I have my experience buying new kits at retail from Japanese makers, though that's overwhelmingly sci-fi kits.  HLJ's prices generally work out to a conversion of yen to dollars by dividing the price in yen by 100.  I'll be curious to see if the same is true with this kit, or if they mark it up as much as the report from Kitlinx.  And yes, $50 isn't bad, either.  We'll see how it comes out.

It looks like Tamyia went the same route as Monogram regarding engineering the booms and main wing. The booms are seperate from the wings which makes it really difficult to align the booms. The Hobby Boss P-38 L is super easy to assemble because the booms are molded with the main wings and the center fuselage. The main wings, tail wing, booms and fuselage are split into just two parts.  The Tamyia kit has 11 separate parts. I don't get it?

I think that method of molding puts a lot of restrictions on the detail that can be incorporated, and does it not put long seams in the midddle of the sides?  I don't like those. I'm looking forward to getting one of these kits, even though I have every model of the P-38 covered in the stash or built already.

The side seams on the Hobby Boss P-38 are really tight and require minimal touch-up work. A portion of the seam is covered by the radiator pod.

Tamyia has a well deserved reputation for well engineered kits. I guess that only time will tell regarding their P-38.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

It's nice that Tamyia included canopy masks. It would have been really nice if they included a nose weight like they did with their Mig 15.

Their announcement says it comes with a weight.
