It looks like Tamyia went the same route as Monogram regarding engineering the booms and main wing. The booms are seperate from the wings which makes it really difficult to align the booms. The Hobby Boss P-38 L is super easy to assemble because the booms are molded with the main wings and the center fuselage. The main wings, tail wing, booms and fuselage are split into just two parts.  The Tamyia kit has 11 separate parts. I don't get it?

I'm looking forward to this kit, too, though I'm not chucking my Monogram kits, just as I didn't jettison my Devastators, either, when Great Wall produced their kit.

$50 sounds very reasonable. The Lightning is in the same size class as other twins like the Mosquito, Beaufighter, or Me-110. Just wider aft of the wings due to the twin booms.

Secondhand, maybe, as folks dump those kits in favor of this one. But those two companies never drop prices on their kits. They just rebox them with a new set of decals and box art and add another $5-$10 to the MSRP over the last short run issue of the same kit.

 

Sorry shouldn't have used the term 'plummet'. I do expect though that the venders who do our local model shows will probably give me better deals on the Hasegawa and Academy kits. But as you said the older boxes of the same kits tend to be cheaper than the newer boxings of the same thing.

I want one of those!  I could special order it from the local hobby shop, but they always charge full list price for special orders.  They need to reconsider this policy.  Therefore, I will wait awhile until the usual sources have them available on-line.

What model was Richard Bong's Marge,did he actually fly Marge in combat,or was that just a promotional bird.

 

 

 

 

Marge was an L I  believe. Possibly a late J, but definitely the type with the later designed chin scoops area.  But Bong was also one of the 5th AF pilots who helped introduce the P-38 into combat in the SWPA with the early model as well.

Looking at photos, and doing a bit of reading, Bong flew several P-38s marked as “Marge’s”, J & L. But he does not appear to have done the I, II, III naming approach like other pilots did.

Great the Revell Monogram one I built was a huge disappointment I look forward to this being released.

Word on the street is that it’s a F/G/H.  I would have thought it would be a L or J.

Being the oddball modeler I am, I’d like an M night fighter.  I love the gloss black paint scheme, little radar pod and the humbacked RIO station. 

I'd love to build a droop-snoot version.
