Not the CAG bird, its the squadron CO's bird. It was called "The Tomato", and like you mentioned, it was not  popular scheme with any of the flight crews, from the CO on down.

Fightertown Decals did that bird on 48-021, but I never picked it up.

Sad ending, that bird crashed in 2002 during a cat shot, with the loss of the pilot.

yep the squadron CO not the CAG. Don't know why I did that duh!

I have the decals for tomato also. Didn't know about the deadly ending there.

That is a beautiful build . I was wondering if the Hasegawa f-14 is as good as the Tamiya ?

NO freaking way! I have built several Hasegawa Tomcats and no way are they even close in fit and details to the Tamiya kitty.  I love those Tamiya cats.

You and me both buddy. I have two in the stash and another one on deck as a commission so it’s whipping time x3 in the near future for me.Surprise

I've got 28 Hase F-14 kits in storage back stateside.  Might have a fire sale when I get back.   I've got so many decals for the Hase kits, and I'm not sure how well some of the large tail decals (think VF-111 sunburst) will fit on the Tamiya kit.

ish

they need some whipping your get into shape but eventually they look good once done. I will build the ones I have but any future Tomcats will be Tamiya. I have 2 Hobby Boss ones in the stash and look very yummy but don't know about ease of build with them.

I built the Hase kit for the first time way back in 1997, so I’m intimately familiar with the challenges of building them.  Remember when they were the best game in town? The kit that Black Box (remember them?), Eduard, Microscale, Aeromaster, Eagle Strike, and others all made detail/decal sets for?  I’ve got a teeny-weeny fortune invested in all things Hasegawa F-14.  The special edition kits that included new white metal or resin parts?  In the stash you go.  Life sent me a curveball by offering me a job overseas that was just too lucrative to pass up once I left the service, so the entire stash is in a climate controlled storage unit until I move back.

I’ve flirted with buying and shipping a Tamiya kit over here, just to really see for myself how good it is for myself, but all I’d be able to do with it is dry fitting the parts together.

When I was building them, this Hyperscale article was the best source on the ins and outs of building the Hase kit:

I printed it out all three parts and kept them in a binder on my workbench.  Now a quick Google search will show 6 YouTube vids on building this kit.  Ah, progress…
