WIP Academy 1/72 B-17F Flying Fortress Memphis Belle
Posted by Tosh on Sunday, September 20, 2020 2:53 PM

To my fellow FSM Forum Members,

It seems that young Master Ezra is into bombers all of a sudden, just like the last build of which was a Atlantis B-24J Liberator.  I wanted to do a Corsair build.  But Ezra has his mind set with this B-17 Flying Fortress.  So instead of a Corsair kit, I went ahead and purchased several stamps with Corsairs as it's topic.  There are some First Day Covers (FDC) that I purchased because it has to do with the F4U theme.  I'll post these stamps on the General Discussion thread to share with members.

I also acquired stamps from Russia printed in 1945 that depicts WWII Aircraft in combat.  Some of the stamps that I recognize (There are a complete collection of 9 stamps) were purchased in 1989 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.  While living there, I happen to be obserserving the 50th Anniversary of WWII, hence my purchase of the set back then.  I sold that set sometime ago so when I saw the opportunity to purchase it again I pulled the trigger.

If my memory serves me correctly, there are some very noticeable WWII Aircraft depicted.  A Yak and a Airacobra are depicted in this set.  There are also some Russian made heavy bombers and other aircraft in a combat battle depiction.

Now back to this build, as always please view the photos below in regards to the build.  Ezra and I are excited to start on the infamous "Memphis Belle" build.  If I remember correctly, there is a movie based on the "Memphis Belle" with Harry Conick Jr. as a cast.  Of course he sings in the movie, I think he sang Danny Boy.

I want to take the time out and thank all of FSM Members for continuously supporting Ezra and I WIP, he gets very excited when I read back the read and replies!

This Kit is the second Academy B-17 build.  The first one I purchased at HL.  This kit was a gift from my son to keep Ezra and myself occupied.  As for the fit and finish, it excels in that regard and became a very enjoyable build for the both of us.  See the photo below for the first build.  As always, thank you sir for the read and reply!

Hi, Toshi -

I've not built this Academy kit, but the ones I have built were good to very good. I hope this one will be an enjoyable project for you and Ezra, your VP of model construction. He has a VERY pleased look on his face, while holding the kit box.

Thanks for this post, and for the ones about your stamp collecting. I'm only a collector on a limited level, just duck stamps for me, but I do really enjoy them.

So glad that you and Mrs. Toshi are both doing well now, as reported in your earlier post. You both were due for a run of good luck and better health.

I'll be following your work on this kit. Best regards.

Tosh, Col. Morgan would be proud. You should take a day trip to Dayton to the USAF Museum with Ezra to see the real thing. The Belle has been fully restored and on display there. There is a flying B-17 at Willow Run Airport in MI about half way between Detroit and Ann Arbor MI. Consider taking him up in that when he is old enough. You would enjoy that also.

Ezra is not even close to a VP of Model Construction, he tells everyone in every aspect of life what to do and not do.  Lol!  He hails as Empreror Ezra of the kingdom of adults with his most amazing famous words; "WHY"!!!!

We were only able to breakdown photos of the kit, the actual bench work will start either tomorrow or Wednesday.  My son, Ezra's dad has a day off so plans have been made for an outing for a father and son day.

As for the thread "My other hobby" in philatelics, it's my pleasure sir to be able to share my stamps with FSM Forum members.  I'm most honored.  I'll be posting Football/Sports cards on that thread as well.

I did purchase a remote control car (RC ) his first, so we will see what he does with it.  It has the traditional toggle controls but it has Bluetooth built in and he can control the RC car with an iPhone that you download from a app for his RC car.  It's a red Corvette.  Of course he picked it!  Lol!

Thank you sir for the read and reply!

Yes, I've always wanted to visit the Dayton, Ohio to see the USAF Muswum.  I'll probably make that trip with Ezra when I can get my strenght back up.  Thank you sir for the read and reply!

Toshi;

It is so good to see posts about you and The Little Man. Ezra is lucky to have you and the Mrs's. Now as to his famous question.  WHY? Standard Operating Procedure for a young fellow's grey matter. Tell him the truth always. He'll thank you for it. I am curious how this works out. When I personally saw the Belle she was in run down condition in the park in Memphis.

I jumped for joy when I heard she was being restored ! Sure beats seeing her with torn Fabric, Faded paint and Flat tires!

Good to see that you two are starting another kit. Yes

That box is almost as big as Ezra! Smile

On a side note, my son loved "Mote control" when he was Ezra's age. Hope he has fun with the car.

Thank you so very much crown r n7 for stopping by and sharing your thoughts with us.  Ezra keeps wanting to AB and I don't even have a single piece assembled yet!  Lol!!!

Tomorrow afternoon, we will definately start this project as Ezra has to be returning home to his mothers this Friday.  We won't have him back for another 2 weeks so until then, we will be hanging out at the park playing and fishing.  Then it's nap time in the afternoon and when he awakes, that's when the assembly process begins.  Thank you sir for the read and reply!

The pleasure is always ours especially for Ezra and I since we are truly just beginners compared to the veteran builders on the FSM site.  In essence, It's Mrs. Toshi and I that feels blessed to be able to spend such quality time with him, he's just a bundle of joy to be with.  His ever inquisitive mind constantly questioning what is this or that Definately keeps us on our toes.  Lol!

That sounds so awe inspiring to actually see the Memphis Belle up close in any condition.  As another FSM Forum member suggested, it would be very educational for Ezra as well as Mrs. Toshi and I to visit Dayton, Ohio at the USAF museum just to see the different aircraft display.  That is truly being in touch with history and learning from all of our mistakes only to bring mankind closer than ever before to not make anymore wars and destroy humanity.

That's why I try my best in teaching Ezra and guide him in historical knowledge so he understands his path in progressing his life and making those that are around him and love him to share and inspire.   As the saying goes, the meaning of life is to truly enjoy and live it to its full potential.  Thank you sir for the read and reply as well as supporting our WIP builds.

Hey Tosh! Be careful, he'll want to be sitting your lap driving soon.

Oh no, not just yet!  Lol!  He always asks if he can sit on the drivers side of our car, but I keep telling him he needs to get a job first to be able to pay for the car insurance and to outright purchase a vehicle.  He always then goes to his piggy bank to inform me that he has a lot of coins to be able to afford a car as well as buy a toy!

It's good to be back in the bench to have members follow our builds together and getting feed back. Ezra is very excited about this build.  He constantly imitates my movement and tries to copy my moves constantly so I always have to be careful in what I do and how I present myself especially with my language.  In itself, I admit that I on rare occasions catch myself using bad language only to excuse myself then to spell out the bad language to Mrs. Toshi!  Lol!  I wont be able to spell things out soon as he will be learning to read anytime soon.  Until then, it's just a matter of enjoying and having fun while building kits or collecting stamps, sports cards, and a new thing he's into, Pokémon cards.  What's next!  Thank you sir for the read and replies, it's greatly appreciated.

Enjoy the time Toshi, they grow up way too fast. I will be watching this build with interest. Incidently, I am going to have to start working with PE soon. Is Ezra available for consultation and if so, whats his price? Chocolate ice cream, milkshakes????

Yes, for his Memphis Belle build we will be watching the Movue so that he has at the very least a visual understanding of this particular kit.  Thank you for the read and reply.

If you do manage a visit to Dayton, plan on 2-3 days.  You will enjoy it more and will be way less stressful on everyone than if you try to see everything in one day.

Think it's going to be hard to keep hands off her when the little guy isn't there.

I Definately will be enjoying his company everyday if it's possible.  As for Ezra's consultation on builds, his payments can be made with chocolate milk.  He went through 2 gallons of chocolate milk in 7 days.  Wow!  Ice cream and shakes will be 20% of his tips!  Lol!

Ezra and I are getting ready to primer the Academy B-17 "Memphis Belle".  We are using a economical Rustoleum Gray Primer.

Here we are at step number one.  Ezra is much more interested in the Tamiya stand then building the cockpit.  Lol!  Some days he's on it, and some days he's not.

Question....looks like part k27 is installed upside down from what the instructions call for...or maybe an optical illusion.

Thank you for the heads up!  Mrs. Toshi said that since I'm Japanese, I do everything backwards!  Lol!  Thanks again goldhammer.

I think I should be watching cartoons with Ezra instead of attempting to assemble "Memphis Belle" backward.

Ezra did the painting with Model Master Green Zinc Chromate.  We were going to paint the seats and maybe assemble a few more things.  But he requested bath time, he keeps us very busy and very active!  Lol!

I wanted to take this time out and to address these glasses called "Mighty Sight".  They can be worn like I do, as reading glasses or onto prescription glasses.

What makes these glasses fantastic is the built in LED.  Plus they charge up with a USB.  It's especially great at night and works wonders while building a kit! I purchased mine at Walmart.

Keep the receipt as if anything happens, you get 90 days for a refund or in my case an even exchange for a new one as one of my glasses malfunctioned with the LED lights.  It's such a great product, I have 2.

No way it's your heritage my friend.  I've had to cut loose more than one part and redo it because I've screwed up.  Happens to all of us.

Good start for the little guy....tell him to keep up the good work/play.
