Monogram 1/48 Tiger Shark P-40B

I did some research on this aircraft and the markings place it on Mitchel Field, NY in 1942 with the 8th Pursuit Group. I added the tail stripes for my own benefit. The actual plane didn't have those, but it needed more color lol.

Nope. I use Tamiya Extra Thin. I'm just very careful lol.

Good choice. That's what I would've suggested. Again, I stuck with the kit parts and I did end up with a crack behind the coolent cap. I just had to accept it at the time because I entered it into a timed Group Build Competition over on Genesis Model's site.

That's excellent. I did end up using the kit canopy, but not without surgery and modifications to make it functional on my build. Really wish I could find the pictures, but I think I'm going to have to take some new ones.

Since the canopy that comes with it is literally unusable so I ordered a vacuum formed canopy which to my surprise does not include the rear glass so I'll have to fab those. But so far I'm really happy with it.

I have no idea on when the canvas was used or not in the front wheel wells. I added it to the rear gear but that's it. 

So after a few fights with my airbrushes and compressor I finally got it painted. Now for decals and details. 

Looking great! This was the first kit I attempted when I got back into modeling and the seams were a bear. You handled them well.

Question on the wheel wells- I recall seeing some with canvas covers inside the wells. Any info on where/when they were used?

If it's the old Monogram kit then it will go together well, even though there's no real details inside it.

I built and painted mine simply as a decompression build. No extras except for scratch built cannon barrels and I painted over the canopy glass because I didn't feel like doing anything inside the interior.

I still enjoyed it and it looks good hanging up above. I'm sure you will enjoy the simplicity of it.

I obliterated half of mine as well just trying to get that nose to get back into shape, but in the end I think I made the right choice by scribing the panel lines back in. Something I'm not going to do the next time I build this kit. 

The next one is going up on the ceiling with my P-36 and my Zero.

 

I have a zero in my build pile. It's another one of these white box exports. years ago I decided to get back into modeling so I pulled it out of my boxof models in storage, painted the pilot, glued him in and glued the fuselage half's together and quit lol. I may have to do it next. Maybe.

I appreciate the kind words. I have accidentally obliterated some panel lines and I'm not sure if I want to re scribe them or not. Its for sure no magnum opus lol. 

Wing root looks great! And it looks like you got that nose sorted out well too, and that's a problematic area with that kit. I had to use filler and very carefully add the panel lines back to it. That took a lot of time with my build and I know you've earned the cudos for that part of the build alone.

Yes, I always loved these old Monogram kits. I'll have to say that I recently bought an Airfix 1/48 P-51D and I'm pretty amazed at the detail. I plan on doing that one after my stepdads fathers P-51 from WWII if I can get some good pictures of it. 

And this one represented a leap forward from Monogram's first generation of plastic kits, too-the US Navy aircraft.  This generation of kits were models in the truer sense-more and finer detail, and greater attempts to be as accurate as possible.

The P-40B is one of my all-time favorites, too.

I did get where the bottom front of it's glued to the body off a little bit but ive massaged it back to looking ok. 

I did that with an previous build I did for my oldest son, but it threw the dihedral of the wings off too much. That's why I chose to shim the gaps the last time.

Yes but I ended up using masking tape to draw both wing tips up. That seemed to fit the wing roots to both sides pretty well. 

Any issues with the wing roots gaps yet?

I used styrene strips to fill the gaps on mine and it worked well.

Thanks. I already have. I've just been filling seams. I'll probably prime it tomorrow. 

I am totally going to steal that needle idea. That's smart!

That IP and the landing gear look really good. How close are you to closing the fuselage halves?

Got the landing gear mostly done. Still working on the tires. 

I can't get a decent photo of the IP but what I did was cut some very fine slivers of white plastic out and placed them in the instrument holes to represent needles and whatnot and then filled the holes up with Future. 

Here is some more work I did. I added the tow rings to the landing gear and brake lines. 

Then I opened up the cowling flaps. 

And I had to make a new blast tube since one had broken off the wing years ago. I made the one on the left.
